Hanoi begins 2025 covered in smog

Vietnam's capital Hanoi was engulfed in smog on Jan. 3, 2025 with some local residents facing issues due to the increased pollution levels. Air quality levels in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi were rated 'hazardous' with an air quality index (AQI) score of 305 at one point on Jan. 3, according to live rankings kept by Swiss group IQAir, which tracks pollution levels in cities across the world. The thick smog is mostly caused by heavy traffic, trash burning and industrial activities, which has significantly reduced early morning visibility in the capital city’s streets over the past few weeks.
