An opening gala was held at the National Theatre in Warsaw as Poland inaugurated its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union, which it assumed on 1 January 2025.

00:11Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the President of the European Council
00:15Antonio Costa both gave opening speeches. In a post on social media platform X,
00:21Costa said that the Polish presidency will prove that patriotism and European
00:25integration are interconnected. European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen was
00:31unable to attend the gala. It comes after she was diagnosed with pneumonia and cancelled her
00:36engagements for the next two weeks. Also, the ambassador to Hungary was not present at the
00:42gala, after Poland uninvited the ambassador following a diplomatic spat over political
00:47asylum. The Polish government has already presented its agenda, which includes a
00:54prioritization of the defense and security of Europe, the resistance to disinformation,
00:59migration at the EU external borders and the environmental transition.
