00:00By and large it was fairly impressive according to police and the Premier as well have spoken
00:07earlier this morning.
00:08However, there were some incidents of note, one of them in Coogee where there were two
00:12groups of teenagers where the pair of groups were essentially engaged in a kind of war
00:17of words or barbs with each other, so say the police.
00:20And then when police tried to quell this, they identified one teenager in particular
00:24who not only then started becoming obstinate towards police, so they allege, but he also
00:29actually allegedly spat in the face of one of the officers and was then arrested and
00:33resisted arrest during that process.
00:36As that happened, police then also conducted a search on him where they allegedly found
00:40cannabis as well.
00:42In a separate incident on the other side of the city, in Coogee, it was the case where
00:46a young boy received stabbed wounds to the back of his torso region where he was at a
00:52park, Bright Park in Guildford, and it was there where there were a series of fireworks
00:57being let off before this incident happened.
01:00Now police are investigating that matter.
01:02The good news for that boy who suffered stabbed wounds is that he is in a serious but stable
01:07condition and they're believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
01:11All in all though, we saw a lot of people come out to the streets of Sydney, particularly
01:15in the CBD when there was more than 200,000 people just at the designated viewing areas
01:20alone.
01:21Police Commissioner Karen Webb described the incidents they had to deal with across the
01:25CBD.
01:26Mounted a big operation on New Year's Eve, concluded about 2am this morning, and we're
01:32pleased to report that the crowd was generally well behaved.
01:37Just in the CBD we made 36 arrests, those people will be before the court.
01:43Across Sydney in the New Year's operation we made 49 arrests, but generally very pleased
01:50with the way the operation came together.
01:52We worked well with obviously the other agencies and that people were able to come into the
01:56city, enjoy their night, and get home safely.
02:00And Miles, you're at Bondi Beach this morning, how are people starting their new year there?
02:06It's a tale of two cities in a way, or at least a duality of Carpe Noctem, those seizing
02:12the night, and Carpe Diem, those getting up, it's not so early now but certainly this morning
02:17you saw people get into ice baths, get into their exercise earlier, we actually stopped
02:21and had a chat with a couple of people who took to Bondi Beach as the sun was rising
02:25on the east coast of Australia for 2025.
02:27I was very chill, you know, I was just at home, kind of just preparing for the year
02:33and wanted to get up nice and early.
02:35We went to see the fireworks, so we hadn't had a drink the whole day.
02:39We went sober for the first time in 12 years for New Year's night, and then we started
02:45drinking after midnight.
02:46It was a quiet 5pm dinner with my partner last night, and I was in bed by about 9 o'clock
02:51last night, yeah.
02:52I went a little bit more wild, I was in bed by like 11.
02:55Well, I've been just dancing all night and drinking, sleep for half an hour and came
03:02here to see the sun rise.
03:04So you see right there Dan, truly a very broad range of the way people decided to either
03:09start or end their 2024 and start their 2025 I should say.
03:13Now of course as you can see it's warmed well and truly up and the beach is relatively
03:18packed, but certainly not the busiest I've ever seen it at least at Bondi, one of the
03:22landmark beaches, but people are at least getting a bit of sun and clear skies.
03:26Thankfully no rain here in Sydney's eastern suburbs as the new year starts for us here in Sydney.
