00:00And the news overseas at U.S. gun violence prevention measures have been strengthened

00:04under the Biden administration, but big policy changes are expected once President-elect

00:09Donald Trump takes office in January.

00:12VOA's Veronica Banderas Iglesias spoke with gun owners and gun safety advocates about

00:17this matter.

00:18That gun owners' rights will be protected under his leadership is a promise that President-elect

00:26Donald Trump has said he'll swiftly deliver on.

00:30In my second term, we will roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment.

00:35Attacks are fast and furious, starting the minute that Crooked Joe shuffles his way out

00:40of the White House.

00:42Almost 47,000 lives were lost to gun violence in 2023, according to the Centers for Disease

00:48Control and Prevention.

00:50President Joe Biden put a series of measures in place that researchers say are helping

00:55to bring that number down.

00:57This includes the American Rescue Plan funds to support community violence intervention

01:03programs.

01:04The Biden administration has strengthened the ability of the ATF and the FBI to regulate

01:12the industry.

01:13Gun rights advocates say these measures violate the right to bear arms granted in the Second

01:19Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

01:21They are confident Trump will do away with them.

01:24We don't think that they've done anything to keep people safe.

01:28All they've done is infringe on Second Amendment rights.

01:30Supporters are also eager for Trump to fulfill his pledge to sign a concealed carry reciprocity

01:36law.

01:37It would facilitate permit holders traveling to all 50 states with their weapons.

01:42In each state that you pass through, you have to look up their specific gun laws, and in

01:47some cases you wouldn't be legal to carry in those particular states.

01:52So that's something that we would like to see at the federal level.

01:55Frank Cimarelli's son, Camden, who had a history of mental health problems, died weeks after

02:00shooting himself in 2022 with a legally purchased gun.

02:05Cimarelli would like gun safety measures such as enhanced background checks to remain in

02:10place under the Trump administration.

02:12You know, if a mom or dad wants to keep a gun in the house for protection, I have no

02:17problem with that.

02:19The problem I have is, why does your right to have a gun overshadow my right to keep

02:32a gun out of my house?

02:35Few research surveys show there's broad bipartisan support among the public for preventing people

02:41with mental illness from purchasing guns, but Americans remain deeply divided on most

02:47gun policy proposals.
