00:00This is an update on what happened yesterday in Northern Luzon and the volcanic activity of the volcanoes in the country.

00:06Let's find out together with FIVOX Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol.

00:10Dr. Bacolcol, good afternoon.

00:16Yes sir, good afternoon to you too.

00:19Yes.

00:20Doc, we just asked for an update on what happened yesterday in Northern Luzon,

00:25where was the epicenter of the eruption and where did it occur?

00:32The eruption yesterday was 5.6 magnitude and 23 kilometers deep.

00:38The epicenter is located in the Bangi Sea, Ilocos Norte,

00:43specifically around 16 kilometers north, 64 west of Bangi, Ilocos Norte.

00:50So, the highest intensity that was reported to us is intensity 5 in Batac and Lauag Cities,

00:56as well as in the cities of Adams, Bacara, Badok, Bangi, Bana, Burgos, Corimasau,

01:03Dingras, Dumalneg, Narcos, Pauay, Pasukin, Pinili, Sarat, and Vintar in Ilocos Norte.

01:09In Ilocos Norte, intensity 5 in Vigan City and in the cities of Pantay, Cabugao,

01:15Magsingal, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santo Domingo, and Maysinait.

01:20And intensity 5 in Mayklaveria in Cagayan.

01:23Yes.

01:24Were there any aftershocks after the eruption?

01:29Yes.

01:30We had aftershocks and as of 11 a.m. today,

01:33we were able to record a few aftershocks and the highest one was only magnitude 3.1.

01:42Dr. Bacolcual, for our countrymen to know,

01:45is there a connection between these aftershocks and the eruption in Ilocos Sur?

01:53The aftershock yesterday can be associated with the subduction in Manila Trench.

01:59Just like the eruption in Ilocos Sur since December 17,

02:05even though it was still in Manila Trench,

02:08it was in another segment of Manila Trench.

02:13How many aftershocks have been recorded in the offshore areas of Ilocos Sur?

02:20As of 11 a.m. today,

02:23we have recorded 201 aftershocks offshore of Ilocos Sur since December 17.

02:30In December 19, this was the highest, reaching 70.

02:35But after that, after December 22,

02:38we averaged only one or two aftershocks every day.

02:44So this means that it dissipated gradually.

02:49Dr. Bacolcual, can you explain to us

02:52what is the update in Manila Trench after the next eruption?

02:57Is it still possible for a higher or stronger eruption to occur because of this?

03:04Manila Trench is very much active

03:07and the next aftershocks are just proving its seismic hazard potential.

03:13The strong aftershocks are still possible in the future,

03:17not only in Manila Trench but also in other trenches and active holes in the Philippines.

03:23That's why it's important for us to be fully prepared.

03:28Here in the long-awaited The Big One,

03:31are these also indications of the possible movement of the West Valley Fault?

03:37Or is there also a connection to this?

03:41This is what I always ask.

03:44Actually, there is no connection to the movement of the West Valley Fault.

03:48Manila Trench and West Valley Fault have different tectonic features.

03:52And their activities are not the same.

03:57In other talks, we would also like to ask for an update

04:02on the activity of Mt. Canloon as of now.

04:05How many tremors were seen from this volcano?

04:09And what is the data on the plume and dark ashes that it is emitting as of now?

04:15For the past 24 hours, we have witnessed 26 volcanic earthquakes.

04:20Canloon Volcano is still in Alert Level 3, meaning there is still a high level of unrest.

04:25And yesterday, we were able to record ash emission activities that reached 300 meters.

04:32And this morning, we were also able to record 6 ash emission events

04:37that reached up to 200 meters.

04:41Before the end of the year,

04:43we would also like to ask for an update on the activity of Mt. Mayon and Taal Volcano.

04:48What is its status as of now?

04:52Taal Volcano is still in Alert Level 1, meaning there is still a low level of unrest.

04:57Same with Mt. Mayon Volcano, which is also in Alert Level 1.
