Sausages have been around for over 5,000 years, with the earliest evidence found in Sumeria, which is now modern-day Iraq. The word "sausage" comes from the Latin word salsus, which means "salted." The process of making sausages began as a way to preserve meat by mixing it with salt, herbs, and spices.
