00:05From two Gotham City villain projects with two very different fates,
00:08to skeevy reality TV, here are five of 2024's biggest winners and losers.
00:14First up on the winners list, former child stars. Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez are on
00:20quite the hot streak, with both stars being contenders for Oscar nominations.
00:24Zendaya had two big wins this year with Dune Part II and Challengers. Meanwhile,
00:29the Lindsay Lohan comeback is looking real, with the actress starring in the Netflix Christmas
00:33comedy Our Little Secret and the upcoming Freaky Friday sequel. However, certain veteran male stars
00:39didn't have a great year. Francis Ford Coppola sold his wine company and bet more than $100
00:45million to make a film, Megalopolis, which only grossed $12 million globally. Likewise,
00:50Kevin Costner ditched his day job, which happened to be the biggest drama on TV,
00:56to try and make four movies, Horizon and American Saga, two of which might never get made after the
01:01first grossed only $31 million in theaters. Another winner, Penguin. The Penguin was
01:06originally supposed to be a limited series to hold the Batman fans over until The Batman Part II.
01:12Instead, the show scratched that post-Sopranos itch for HBO to return to the mob drama genre
01:17and cast a much wider audience net than anybody expected, becoming the streamer's third biggest
01:23first season show ever, with Colin Farrell and Kristen Milioti giving Emmy-worthy performances
01:28to top it off. But not all Gotham villain projects had the same fate. Enter Joker Folia Do. Although
01:34both projects focused on an iconic Batman villain, the musical follow-up to 2019's acclaimed Joker
01:40failed with both critics and audiences alike, with one critic accusing writer-director Todd
01:44Phillips of making the film, quote, bad on purpose. The film couldn't even be saved by
01:49adding global superstar Lady Gaga to the mix. Next up, Popstar Girlies. It was an incredible
01:55year for pop music thanks to releases by Taylor Swift, Chapel Roan, Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter,
02:02and Billie Eilish. But Chapel arguably delivered the most infectious album of the bunch with the
02:07rise and fall of a Midwest princess. But not all Pop Girlies walked away winners. Katy Perry quit
02:13her American Idol day job to launch a comeback album that some critiqued must have been made by
02:18AI. The album's lead single, Woman's World, was an extremely on-the-nose feminism anthem
02:23in every respect, except for the choice of having Dr. Luke as producer. Not the best move.
02:29FX's big bet on Shogun paid off by winning a record 18 Emmys. Fargo returned to its best
02:35season in a few cycles, and The Bear remains a hit. While FX soared, Apple TV Plus plummeted.
02:40On the film side, Argyle and Fly Me to the Moon underperformed, and the star-studded Wolfs was
02:46yanked from theaters. On the TV side, The Big Door Prize, Schmigadoon, and more all were cancelled.
02:52In the age of dating app fatigue, viewers can't get enough of young, hot people falling in love,
02:57cheating, splitting up, and rinse and repeat. Shows like Love Island USA and Love Is Blind
03:02all had their most-watched seasons this year. Nobody wants The Bachelor's Rose,
03:06they want Hashtag My Person, or at least a fun frolic in The Hideaway and a flood of new
03:11Instagram followers. While streaming reality TV flourished, 2024 may have put a nail in the coffin
03:17for cable TV for good. Paid TV providers saw their video subscribers fall even faster, in a sad state
03:23of affairs for something that was arguably once the greatest media business of all time. For the
03:28full list of this year's biggest winners and losers, head to THR.com. And for the latest
03:34entertainment news and updates, keep watching The Hollywood Reporter News.
