We go hands-on with the Lenovo Auto Twist, a mind-bending concept laptop that uses voice commands, face-tracking and more to move. There’s a motor in the hinge that makes the magic happen, while AI cameras open new possibilities for calls, photos and presentations.

00:00All right, check this out.
00:01This is a laptop that twists and rotates
00:04and even dances all automatically.
00:06It's called the Lenovo Autotwist.
00:08It's very aptly named, if I do say so,
00:11and it was just revealed as a proof of concept device
00:13at Lenovo Innovation World
00:15that's happening adjacent to IFA 2024.
00:19The thing that separates the Lenovo Autotwist
00:21from every other Windows 11 laptop
00:23and every other laptop, period,
00:25is this teeny motor that basically controls the hinge
00:28to complete a couple of interesting functions.
00:31For example, using AI,
00:33the laptop's camera can detect your face
00:35and track it as, say, you move around on a video call
00:38or while you're hosting a presentation on a stage.
00:40It can also take a panoramic photo by rotating around,
00:44if that's the kind of thing you've always wanted
00:46your laptop with a five-megapixel camera to be able to do.
00:51You're looking at vertical 180-degree
00:53and horizontal 270-degree twisting
00:56at 30 degrees per second
00:57and 20 degrees per second, respectively.
01:01Another use case for the Lenovo Autotwist
01:03is the ability to control the laptop screen hand-free
01:07using voice commands.
01:08High-twist laptop mode.
01:11So during the demo, some of the commands I tried
01:13were high-twist open laptop, high-twist tablet mode,
01:16and high-twist close laptop.
01:18You get the point.
01:19Not sure how much easier this is
01:21than just opening and adjusting my laptop with my hands,
01:24but I would imagine that this would be pretty brilliant
01:26from an accessibility standpoint.
01:28And it is cool that apparently
01:30when you walk away from the laptop,
01:31it will shut automatically,
01:33which is good from a privacy standpoint.
01:36But as with anything with a motor and hinge,
01:39there's a big question about how long something like this
01:42will actually last,
01:43and Lenovo is estimating a life cycle of 20,000 times.
01:48It's obviously a possible point of failure,
01:50though surprisingly, these demos went off without a hitch.
01:53High-twist close laptop.
01:56Very important to reiterate
01:57that this is just a concept device,
02:00which means that it's kind of Lenovo's way
02:02of just showing it off to see how it's received
02:04and what people are saying,
02:06and whether this is something consumers
02:08say they might actually want.
02:09So let me know in the comments
02:11what your first impressions are.
02:12Is this the type of innovation you're interested to see
02:15in the laptop market,
02:16or does it seem like a little bit of a gimmick?
02:18Either way, the Lenovo AutoTwist was fun to check out,
02:21but you can see more of it
02:23and some of the other announcements
02:24from Lenovo Innovation World on our socials.
02:27Thanks for watching, and I'll catch you next time.
