00:00Joining me now is AccuWeather California expert Ken Clark. Ken, thank you so much for joining us this morning amid all the storms in the West.
00:11Yes, there is a series of storms headed for California, but it's going to be, again, the haves and the have-nots. That's going to be the story here of the storms this week.
00:19The southern part of California has had very little rain since October 1st. Northern California has had quite a bit of rain. And that pattern is really not going to change this week very much.
00:29Yeah, we're tracking our next storm. It's Juice Up. You can already tell it's offshore, but it's going to be moving east here, Ken, and it's going to be dumping a lot of rain.
00:39It will be dropping a lot of rain, especially from the North Bay on northward. One to three inches of rain. The mountains are going to see up to a foot or two of snow above about 6,000 feet.
00:50So it's going to be a good precipitation maker again for northern California. In the south, barely maybe a tenth of an inch or maybe even less than that will fall in Los Angeles, San Diego area during the day tomorrow.
01:02So again, very little rain in the south, lots of rain in the north, and more storms to come in the north this week.
01:07You know, by next Sunday, we could be looking up to a foot of rain in parts of far northern California in total all week long.
01:16Yeah, the plural is important here. I know we were talking earlier about the winds, Ken. Can you explain those impacts there, especially out on the waters and along the coast?
01:27Yeah, this storm is going to bring in a lot of wind across northern California along with the rain. Gusty winds, that may help to cause some power outages from down trees and power lines.
01:38The other thing to point out, very rough surf, very big surf event for California here over the next 24 hours.
01:45Maybe up to 25 foot waves hitting the central coast this afternoon through tomorrow.
01:50In southern California, the L.A. County beaches, the west-facing beaches, could see 8 to 12 foot breakers coming into shore.
01:57And this means coastal flooding, beach erosion, and possibly some very dangerous conditions if you're along the piers or along the jetties across California.
02:08Stay away from those areas.
02:10We appreciate your warnings there, Ken. Now, I know we've been talking about how many storms are going to be passing through this area.
02:17It's really going to be a parade. Can you just dive in a little bit more to the moisture source because we have plenty of it here throughout the week.
02:25We do. It's going to be tapping a lot of moisture from off the Pacific, aiming mainly across northern California and up into the Pacific Northwest.
02:34The storm track will, after tomorrow, will go more north.
02:38So we're looking for the storms to be farther north so the Bay Area won't see as much rain as they will over the next 24 hours after Tuesday.
02:48Now, as you can see, there's a drought monitor here. It has increased a little bit across southeastern most California along the Colorado River.
02:55It's gotten into the exceptional drought situation there. But much of the rest of California is doing pretty good.
03:01Northern California is where most of the water comes for people to drink and also for livestock.
03:09So those reservoirs are in great shape and will continue to be in great shape over the next month or so.
03:16That's an important factor to keep in mind. Thank you so much AccuWeather California expert Ken Clark for joining us this morning.
03:24Have a great holiday.
