00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're looking at the mainline entries of the greatest survival
00:13horror series of all time to see which are the best.
00:17This is every Resident Evil game ranked.
00:19There's always been arguments about which entries are mainline entries and which aren't.
00:23For our list we've included 14 Resident Evil games to look at and if you disagree…
00:28I don't know, chill.
00:29Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:34the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:38Resident Evil 0
00:48There have been arguments for years that with a few adjustments Resident Evil 0 could have
00:53been one of the standout titles in the series, but to me that's like saying with a few
00:56adjustments I could have been a better basketball player than Michael Jordan, I only need to
01:00adjust my weight, skill and age.
01:02Easy right?
01:03Initially planned for the Nintendo 64, it faced a 4 year delay and eventually launched
01:07on the Gamecube.
01:08Serving as a prequel to the original game, it follows Rebecca Chambers after she's separated
01:12from the S.T.A.R.S.
01:14Bravo team and finds herself on a zombie infested train.
01:17Good atmosphere, but that's about it.
01:20Bad gameplay, bad systems, tedious backtracking and a mediocre experience overall.
01:25But it is at the bottom of our list because it should be getting just as much hate as
01:28our next entry.
01:41Resident Evil 6
01:51I am so excited for the day when Capcom remakes Resident Evil 6 so they can do things right
01:56because this game should have been so much better than it was.
01:59This game should have been titled Resident Evil Fan Service because it features a stacked
02:03cast of iconic characters including Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Sherry Burton and Adol Wong.
02:09But not even they could save this game.
02:11By 2012 Capcom was firmly in the action mindset when it came to Resident Evil games, largely
02:17removing all horror from the series.
02:19Resident Evil 6 does everything it can to separate itself from what made the series
02:23great, instead taking inspiration from games such as Call of Duty and Gears of War with
02:27its mechanics, making it a very confused and cluttered mess.
02:31The audience reception dropped from Resident Evil 4 to Resident Evil 5 and Capcom should
02:36have gone ok ok ok we'll go back to a more Resident Evil 4 style.
02:40Instead they went you didn't like the new angle well here it is but way more intense
02:43and far worse.
03:13Resident Evil 5 marked a true turning point for the series, adapting the combat mechanics
03:17of the 4th entry into a full blown focus.
03:20While it improved on many aspects of its predecessor Resident Evil 4, one significant flaw has
03:25tarnished its legacy, forced co-op gameplay.
03:29Those of us who grew up with siblings will appreciate Resident Evil 5 as one of our favourite
03:32entries on the list, but Chris teams up with Sheeva and when Sheeva is controlled by the
03:37CPU her shortcomings become apparent.
03:40She often wastes healing items and struggles to effectively assist her partner.
03:44This forced co-op mechanic frustrated many players and detracted from the experience.
03:49You poor only children had to suffer through this entry and for that we're putting it at
03:53a mild 12.
04:02RESIDENT EVIL 3 REMAKE
04:15After the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake which masterfully modernised the beloved survival
04:19horror classic, fans eagerly anticipated what Capcom would deliver next.
04:24However the Resident Evil 3 remake fell short of those high expectations.
04:28It's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it felt like it was missing
04:32something.
04:33The original Resident Evil 3 was celebrated for its branching gameplay paths and the relentless
04:38Nemesis who pursued players across multiple rooms creating a constant sense of tension.
04:43Unfortunately the remake stripped away these features along with several iconic locations
04:48favouring a more linear experience that felt disconnected from the game that made it great.
04:53While it felt more like RE2, we didn't want RE2 this time, we wanted RE3.
04:57Yeah I wanted Soul Reaver but that's not related and also they won't return my emails.
05:10RESIDENT EVIL 4
05:20This is the game that started it all but was also heavily improved upon.
05:24That's not a roast by the way, that's just a fact.
05:27In 1996 Capcom revolutionised the survival horror genre and launched one of the most
05:31iconic gaming franchises of all time and the whole reason for this list.
05:35Initially conceived as a remake of Sweet Home, a movie tie-in NES game often regarded as
05:39the first survival horror title, it eventually evolved into Resident Evil or Biohazard in
05:45Japan or Shooty Zombie Bang Bang in Australia.
05:48Resident Evil laid a solid foundation for everything that followed and what is a mansion
05:53without a solid foundation.
06:01RESIDENT EVIL CODE VERONICA
06:13Resident Evil Code Veronica picks up after the events in Raccoon City, following Claire
06:17Redfield as she travels to Europe in search of her brother Chris.
06:20That's right, from the first game.
06:22It marked a major evolution for the series, transitioning to fully 3D environments instead
06:27of the pre-rendered backgrounds of earlier titles.
06:30Originally released as a Dreamcast exclusive, it later made its way to the PlayStation 2
06:34after Sega discontinued its final console.
06:37Code Veronica has divided fans, some love it while others are less enthusiastic but
06:42many agree that a remake would be exciting.
06:45Too bad it's already been skipped when we saw the Resident Evil 4 remake.
06:48That being said, I'd have traded it in for an RE4 remake every single time.
07:02RESIDENT EVIL 3 NEMESIS
07:18It's been tough to separate remakes and originals in this list because for the most part, as
07:22much as diehard OG fans will get angry at me for saying, the remakes improve upon the
07:27originals.
07:28Resident Evil 3, however, had a solid original that can't really be beaten by the underwhelming
07:33remake.
07:34Resident Evil 3 brings the Raccoon City outbreak saga which began with Resident Evil 1 to its
07:39dramatic conclusion.
07:40The game is most famous for introducing Nemesis, a relentless tyrant who stalks Jill Valentine
07:46across the city, even pursuing her between rooms.
07:49What sets Resident Evil 3 apart, as discussed earlier, is its branching gameplay where player
07:53choices influence the story's direction, leading to different locations and encounters.
07:58It's a solid game that takes everything learned from the previous entries and improves upon
08:02them massively.
08:13RESIDENT EVIL REMAKE
08:14The 2002 Resident Evil remake set the gold standard for remakes and remains the benchmark
08:29against which all others are measured.
08:31Capcom expanded on the 1996 original, enhancing every aspect without straying from its core
08:37essence.
08:38This remake brought to life the creator's original vision, limited by technology in
08:421996.
08:43It introduced new areas, reimagined map layouts, additional enemies and fresh storylines, all
08:49while staying true to the spirit of the original game.
08:51Of course, the RE2 remake and this remake are like night and day, but for the time,
08:56this was how a remake should be done.
09:06RESIDENT EVIL 2
09:16I'd like to make it real clear with this, I wanted to switch this and the next entry,
09:20but the public and the commenters seem to think this is the way it should be, and I'm
09:24nothing if not a man of the people.
09:26Resident Evil 2 was everything for PS1 fans.
09:30Building on the foundation laid by Resident Evil 1 two years earlier, the sequel improved
09:34upon every aspect of it.
09:36Resident Evil 2 introduced two iconic characters, Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, with Leon
09:41becoming one of the series' most beloved figures.
09:43The game also featured four unique scenarios, offering exceptional replayability.
09:48It's no surprise that Resident Evil 2 became one of the most highly requested remakes among
09:52fans, but we'll get to that later.
10:02RESIDENT EVIL VILLAGE
10:12When Resident Evil Village was unveiled in 2020, the internet erupted over the reveal
10:17of the towering vampire lady, Lady Demetra, Lady Demetra, Lady D, and this fan thirst
10:25led it through the majority of its promotional material, even though Lady D dropped out fairly
10:29early in the experience.
10:31Serving as the second and seemingly final chapter of Ethan Winter's story, the game
10:35picks up where Resident Evil 7 left off.
10:37Since its release, Village has expanded with DLC that takes players into the future, allowing
10:42them to step into the role of Ethan's daughter, Rose.
10:44This new content hints at potential directions the series might explore in its next installment.
10:49From top to bottom, it's the perfect blend of fan favourites Resident Evil 7 and Resident
10:54Evil 4, and it totally works.
11:05RESIDENT EVIL 4
11:24Seeing Resident Evil 4 at number 4 might stir controversy, especially for those who
11:28entered the series with this iconic game, but hear me out, or don't, you've probably
11:32watched enough for me to not get fired.
11:34Following Code Veronica, Capcom took a bold new direction, shifting from survival horror
11:38to a more action-focused experience.
11:41Leon Kennedy returns as the government agent tasked with rescuing the President's daughter,
11:45Ashley.
11:46Resident Evil 4 is undeniably a masterpiece that redefined action games, setting new standards
11:52that influenced the genre for the next decade.
11:54It also popularised mechanics like quick-time events, which, love them or hate them, became
11:58a staple in gaming that pisses me off to this day.
12:09RESIDENT EVIL 7 – BIOHAZARD
12:20The game that saved a series.
12:22The risk to go in a new direction is just that, a massive risk, but sometimes it works
12:27out perfectly.
12:29Five years after the underwhelming Resident Evil 6, Capcom brought the series back to
12:32its survival horror roots, this time adopting a first-person perspective instead of the
12:37traditional third-person view.
12:39The result was Resident Evil 7 – Biohazard, the scariest entry in the series, filled with
12:44intense and unsettling moments thanks to the horrifying Baker family.
12:48We went from fixed-cam, to third-person, to first-person, and all of them worked exceptionally
12:53well in their own way, but first-person is probably the scariest.
13:03RESIDENT EVIL 2 – REMAKE
13:18After the release of Resident Evil 1 Remake in 2002, fans eagerly anticipated a similar
13:23treatment for Resident Evil 2.
13:25However, Capcom stayed silent for 17 years before finally delivering the Resident Evil
13:302 Remake, and the wait might have been for the best.
13:34This waiting and expecting has become a staple of the series now, with two remakes following
13:38that, and fans eagerly awaiting an RE5 Remake.
13:41The RE2 Remake preserves the charm and magic of the original, while modernising it for
13:46a new generation.
13:47I, for one, never played the original, and this game made me go back and throw the disc
13:51in my PS1, just to see.
13:54While the core layout and story remain faithful, the fresh twists elevate the classic.
13:58Despite minor issues like underwhelming beast scenarios, the game's overall quality more
14:03than makes up for it.
14:07RESIDENT EVIL 4 – REMAKE
14:27For many, Resident Evil 4 represents the pinnacle of the series, with over 12 million copies
14:32sold and serving as the entry point for countless fans.
14:36After the successful remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, anticipation grew for a remake of
14:41Resident Evil 4.
14:43Released in 2023, the remake exceeded expectations, staying true to the beloved original while
14:48addressing its flaws and amplifying its strengths.
14:51Some fans praised the original, treating it as the GOAT, but this game improves upon everything
14:56that entry created, so it's hard to argue that this isn't the best entry in the series.
15:01Or maybe it's not?
