New York, Philadelphia and Boston all experienced snow on Dec. 20 as two storm systems collided along the East Coast.
Transcript
00:00Tonight's top story is the winter storm that's been moving across the northern tier of the nation and we've seen images of snow piled up in the midwest now.
00:07We're seeing maybe a more modest snowfall for many in the northeast.
00:11That's right, and then there's a coastal storm set to join forces expanding the winter travel troubles.
00:16And we're also tracking the coldest air of the season for parts of the northeast.
00:20I'll have more details on that coming up.
00:22All right, let's take a look at Philadelphia right now.
00:24Damian, we had a couple of traces of snow so far, but now we're getting into it, reports of snow on parked cars at least.
00:31Yeah, and you can see in that video right there, you can see the snowflakes coming down there in Philly.
00:36It looks like the snowflakes are coming down with more frequency and it looks like the snowflakes are increasing in size.
00:42Yeah, so with temps slowly cooling down a little bit, we're going to see more in the way of an accumulation,
00:48at least the opportunity for a tenth or two, a couple tenths of an inch here this evening.
00:53We are already seeing that.
00:55Earlier we checked out the view in Bethlehem, PA, a couple of counties north,
00:58and it was sticking on the sidewalks and coating the branches with a fraction of an inch to an inch already.
01:03And in many areas around the entire Philadelphia metro, we're seeing the cold begin to win out.
01:09So it's not a big storm here, but again, it's always fun.
01:12The first, I shouldn't say it's always fun, but for many of us, and if you're tuned into us here on the AccuWeather Network,
01:17you may have some enthusiasm for snow, we hope.
01:21And, well, it's the beginning of the holiday season here and the official start to the new season.
01:26Again, winter begins early tomorrow morning and we've got some snow for it.
01:30So we have had the snow out there.
01:32We're tracking also some accumulating snow in the Boston metro that continues to come down.
01:36You can see the deep blues there in Boston, and this is tied to the coastal storm,
01:41which has a little more gumption here, it's a little more organized,
01:44and it's actually being energized by the clipper that came down.
01:48And as this wraps into the southern side of the trough, it just amplifies it a little bit more,
01:52and that makes the low just a little bit stronger,
01:55and that's going to be impacting coastal New England here quite a bit through the evening and the overnight as well.
02:01Let's take you into a list of some of the top snow reports here from Massachusetts and New York, 3 to 3.8 inches so far.
02:07This is the most significant accumulation of snow so far this fall and early winter into Boston as well.
02:13Most areas under this map here are highlighting winter weather advisories,
02:17one or two counties near Stroudsburg, PA, hidden by the banner there, but that's under an advisory too.
02:22There's one county along coastal far eastern down east Maine under a winter storm warning.
02:28So the clipper is wrapping up, but the coastal storm takes over this evening and tonight.
02:32Chance for some light accumulations, Philadelphia to New York and into coastal New Jersey into the late night hours,
02:38and we're looking at a light accumulation, 1 to 3 inches of snow in downtown Boston, 3 to 6,
02:43just barely north and west and even south of the city away from the harbor.
