Taiwan's military is using new technology to train its airborne troops. While virtual reality can help soldiers get used to problem solving on the fly, there's no learning experience quite like jumping from a plane.
Transcript
00:00Airborne soldiers play an important role in Taiwan's overall defense.
00:04They give the country the ability to attack behind enemy lines or reinforce positions
00:08here inside of Taiwan.
00:10We're down south in Pingdong County to find out how Taiwan's military is using technology
00:15like virtual reality to give its paratroopers the best chance to get to the ground safely
00:19and into the fight.
00:20Combining
00:43VR with drilling and tower jumps helps paratroopers get valuable experience in a controlled and
00:48comparatively safe environment.
00:51It also helps the Air Force to reduce wear and tear on its planes.
01:12But eventually, to become fully-fledged paratroopers, the service people here have to take the plunge
01:17and jump from a real plane.
01:47Now it's one thing to jump out of a plane on a sunny day in front of the media and another
01:56thing to jump into a war zone.
01:58But still, Taiwan's military hopes that by combining modern techniques with tried and
02:03true training, it will give its soldiers, its paratroopers, the tools they need to fight
02:08a war the country hopes will never come.
