00:00Although concerned agencies tasked to protect the country's sovereignty face many challenges this year,
00:06they remain undaunted and committed to fulfilling their duties to their countrymen and the motherland.
00:11Inspired by no less than their commander-in-chief,
00:14who vowed the Philippines will never yield even an inch of territory to any foreign aggressor.
00:19The highlights from Patrick de Jesus.
00:22As president, I have sworn to this solemn commitment from the very first day that I took office.
00:45I do not intend to yield. Filipinos do not yield.
00:49The firm stance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is clear on protecting the territory and sovereignty of the Philippines,
00:57including issues related to the West Philippine Sea.
01:04But this year, our troops continued to face many challenges while performing their duties due to repeated harassment by China.
01:12In June, during an incident at Ayungin Shoal deemed the most severe,
01:17one of our soldiers lost a finger following the China Coast Guard's blockade
01:22during the Rotation and Resupply Aurora Mission of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to BRP Sierra Madre.
01:31The repeated ramming and water cannon attacks by China's vessels also continued,
01:36targeting Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources vessels conducting maritime patrols within our Exclusive Economic Zone.
01:46China's bullying extended to the airspace, personally experienced by some journalists.
01:52Despite various trials testing our patience,
01:56the chief executive emphasized the country will not take any actions to escalate tensions in the West Philippine Sea,
02:03but he asserted we will not yield our territory.
02:07This was reiterated by President Marcos Jr. even as China's warships joined in the harassment and blockade activities in the West Philippine Sea.
02:17We are going to continue to perform our mission.
02:20We will never be part of an escalation in the situation in the West Philippine Sea.
02:26If we look at the evolution of the situation in the West Philippine Sea,
02:31the Philippines has never been an agent of escalation of tensions.
02:40Amid this, the military's capabilities continued to be strengthened through various exercises.
02:50This year saw the largest Balikatan exercises in partnership with the United States.
02:56Other nations also participated, culminating in a joint sail through the West Philippine Sea.
03:02Next year's Balikatan will expand further following the President's directive.
03:07The AFP Modernization Program is also prioritized,
03:10with the anticipated acquisition of multirole fighter jets already approved by the President.
03:17The government also rebuked China's criticism of the Philippines' planned purchase of new weapons,
03:23which includes the Mid-Range Capability or Typhoon Missile System from the U.S.
03:28currently in the country and used in various training exercises.
03:32The AFP was not spared from political discussions.
03:36Despite this, they assured their professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution and chain of command.
03:43Our job is to protect the Republic of the Philippines,
03:49protect its people, defend our territory, and defend our sovereignty and our sovereign rights.
03:57This was echoed by the Commander-in-Chief,
04:00who recognized the sacrifices of every soldier in maintaining peace in the country.
04:05Keep up the good work and we in the civilian government are completely behind you.
04:13Don't just stay in the dark about what's happening.
04:16Let's stay focused. We're all in this together.
04:19Am I allowed to fight?
04:21Am I allowed to work?
04:22Am I allowed to debate?
04:26No, my job is to make the Philippines better.
04:30You also have a mission.
04:33This has been Patrick De Azuz,
04:35and this is Highlines 2024 for a new and better Philippines.
