Birmingham City spent wildly in the summer, breaking all kinds of League One transfer records. However ambitious the new owners are, they are not untouchable and PSR rules could halt them in their search for players in January. Here’s the latest on the situation.

00:00Looking at Birmingham City, a massive bit of investment in the summer has got them doing
00:07so well in League One. They want to make sure that this is a campaign that they go straight
00:12back up to the Championship from and they can start fresh. We've mentioned before the
00:17quality throughout this side and the quality that some of the new faces have also brought
00:22into Birmingham City so far this season. Just looking ahead to January, is it an important
00:29window for Blues? There's so much investment gone into that summer window that you might
00:35look at this January and think, could they use it as a bit of a future window to try
00:41and get some more Championship quality in for if they are to be promoted? How do you
00:46see them going about their business in January and how important is the window in general
00:50for Birmingham City?
00:51I think we'll see the spending continue, just not the rate it was in the summer because
00:56that would just be insane really, wouldn't it? It'd be unsustainable and we've never
01:00seen this level of spending in League One before, even the Championship, it's unheard
01:04of so they can't carry on at that rate, especially some of the likes of Jay Stansfield for over
01:09£12 million. You can't keep spending that kind of money, but they are going to address
01:13a few areas, I'm sure of it. There'll be a few players exiting the door as well. Maybe
01:18someone like Deion Sanderson, who was the former captain and then had his drink driving
01:22allegations, lost his captaincy, has since fallen down the pecking order defensively
01:26as well. Could he be on the way out? They might be able to scoop a million or two for
01:30him if they're lucky, probably a bit less than that. Could they then replace him with
01:34a different centre-back? There have been talks of Phil Newman from Hanover, he's been impressing
01:38in the Bundesliga too. Not missed a single minute this season for the German club and
01:43he's six foot four inches tall, but also incredibly quick.
01:48Micky van der Ven comparisons come to mind. I know he's not anywhere near that kind of
01:52level, but in terms of his physique and his pace, he could have similar qualities. It's
01:57been a bit touch and go. Christian Bielik and Christophe Clara have formed a nice partnership,
02:02but both have had the odd injury worry here and there. Ben Davies has stepped in well,
02:07the player on loan from Rangers, but once again, if he gets injured, they need someone
02:11else to fill in. And this is, they definitely need it, Blues. It's more of a want than a
02:18need. But when they've got so much cash available to them, why not address it, is my opinion
02:22on that one.
02:23Yeah, and just looking at Blues' goals, there hasn't been an out-and-out scorer this season
02:30for them. Do you think maybe that's an area they could also improve on?
02:34I think it's just about finding the right combinations. They've got so many options
02:37up front and a second midfielder out on the wing as well. Typically, the left winger plays
02:43a bit wider and stays a bit wider for Chris Davies. The right winger tucks in a little
02:47bit more. They've got to share their minutes as well as Alfie May, and you've got Keshie
02:52Anderson, Willem Willemsen, all trying to get in the team as well. They don't need any
02:56new additions. It's just about getting the best out of the current crop.
