00:20A 92-year-old Japanese man who lived through the American atomic bombing of Nagasaki called
00:30for an abolition of all nuclear weapons as he accepted this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
00:35The prize was awarded to Nihon Hidenaku, a grassroots movement of Japanese atomic bombing
00:40survivors who work to maintain a taboo around the use of nuclear weapons.
01:10The group expressed fear that the taboo around the use of nuclear weapons was weakening,
01:16expressing sadness and anger at Israeli and Russian threats of the possibility at using
01:21nuclear weapons.
01:24Nuclear weapons have grown exponentially in powers and numbers since being used by the
01:28U.S. on Japan in the Second World War.
01:36Damascus new interim leader Mohammed al-Bashir announced he was taking charge of the country
01:40as caretaker prime minister until March 1st with the beginning of the former rebels who
01:46toppled President Bashar al-Assad only days ago.
01:51The departing government met with al-Bashir for the first time on Tuesday since Assad
01:55fled Damascus over the weekend.
01:59Al-Bashir told reporters after the meeting that the ministers discussed transferring
02:03the portfolios to the interim government during the transitional period until the beginning
02:08of March.
02:11Elsewhere in Syria, people continue to celebrate for a third day and shops and banks reopened
02:17despite Israeli airstrikes across the country.
02:21The Biden administration said it will recognize and support a new Syrian government that renounces
02:26terrorism, destroys chemical weapons stocks and protects the rights of minorities and
02:31women.
02:37Israel denied that its military troops are advancing towards Damascus by going beyond
02:41the demilitarized buffer zone which separates Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Syrian
02:46territory.
02:49The capital city as well as the coastal city of Latakia have been the target of Israeli
02:54airstrikes since the fall of al-Assad's regime.
02:58Israel claimed the wave of airstrikes is an attempt to destroy key military infrastructure.
03:04On Tuesday, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the military successfully
03:08destroyed Syria's military fleet.
03:11I am warning the leaders of the murderers in Syria, whoever goes in the way of Al-Assad
03:18will end up like Al-Assad.
03:20We will not allow an Islamic extremist terrorist organization to act against Israel beyond
03:28its borders and in the interest of its citizens.
03:30We will do everything necessary to avoid the threat.
03:34Katz also said they intend to establish a demilitarized zone in southern Syria in order
03:39to prevent attacks on Israel.
03:42Meanwhile, at a press conference, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded
03:47to the growing criticism over Israel's takeover of the demilitarized buffer zone and said
03:52Golan Heights will remain part of Israel for eternity.
04:01Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in court, taking the stand more than
04:06four years after his trial on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust began.
04:12Netanyahu is accused of granting regulatory favors in exchange for positive press coverage
04:18as well as receiving gifts in return for political favors.
04:22The Prime Minister maintains his innocence and says the three cases against him are politically
04:27motivated.
04:28I heard in the media that they say that I want to get rid of the court.
04:37I want to get rid of it.
04:40I have been waiting for this day for eight years.
04:45I have been waiting for eight years to present the truth.
04:50The corruption case has long divided Israel, and both supporters and critics gathered outside
04:55of the courthouse.
04:56We are here to support the rule of law, to oppose the fact that we have a Prime Minister
04:57who is also accused of crimes, and also a criminal.
04:58We are here to support Israel.
04:59We are here to support Israel.
05:00We are here to support Israel.
05:01It is the first time an Israeli Prime Minister appears in court as a criminal defendant.
05:27The trial had been postponed several times already, first because of the COVID-19 pandemic
05:32and more recently because of Israel's war in Gaza.
05:41The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kayakallas, urged that the transition of power
05:46in Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad should not descend into retaliation between
05:51opposing factions.
05:54The transition will present huge challenges in Syria and in the region.
06:00First, there are legitimate concerns about the risks of sectarian violence, extremist
06:07resurgence, and a governance vacuum, all of which must be averted.
06:14We must avoid a repeat of the horrific scenarios of Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan.
06:20Kayakallas called for the protection of all Syrians, including minority groups, as well
06:24as the freedom of religion.
06:27The top diplomat said the first signals coming from the rebel forces were good, but that
06:32it is too early to issue a verdict.
06:35She said the coming weeks are therefore crucial to see if Syria's political situation continues
06:40in the right direction.
06:46At least three people were killed and 20 injured, many of who are in critical condition, after
06:51a Russian strike hit a private clinic in the city of Zaporizhzhia.
06:57Among the victims were two doctors and a five-year-old girl.
07:00The strike also damaged buildings nearby.
07:04In a post on social media platform X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes
07:09proved that Ukraine needs to enhance its air defense systems.
07:13He added that Kyiv submitted all the necessary requests to its partners to do so.
07:19The attack came after the Ukrainian President said he's open to the potential deployment
07:24of Western troops in Ukraine.
07:26Zelensky has said that this would bring Ukraine a step closer to joining NATO.
07:31Meanwhile, at least 11 were injured as a result of a double ballistic missile attack on the
07:37town of Zlaropil in the Kharkiv region.
07:42and 16 residential buildings were damaged, that is according to local authorities.
07:50Days after Romania's presidential election result was declared invalid due to alleged
07:56foreign interference, the European Commission has avoided commentating on the decision.
08:01However, it is still investigating the social network TikTok and its role in the electoral
08:07process, in which independent candidate Kalin Djordjevsky won the first round.
08:13We're now consolidating and assessing all these pieces of evidence that we have received
08:19and based on that we'll decide on next steps with regard to TikTok.
08:23The feeling among several MEPs is that the Chinese social media network has turned a
08:28blind eye to the possible use of its algorithm by a state actor, suspected to be Russia.
08:35They have permitted electoral publicity, which was not marked properly.
08:39They have permitted electoral publicity on election day, which was illegally.
08:43And they have permitted the campaign of a candidate being funded with many millions
08:47of euros, although that candidate has publicly indicated a budget of zero euros for his whole
08:53campaign.
08:54But some MEPs think the constitutional court's decision to annul the elections went too far.
09:01We are talking about a dictatorship, the beginning of a new dictatorship.
09:06We are talking about having killed democracy in this way.
09:12We are talking about the restoration of a form of totalitarianism.
09:18Others applaud the court as they believe that citizens will now be able to count on a fair trial.
09:25I don't think a manipulated election means that the rights of the citizens are respected.
09:31Brussels has not said whether it will take action on the possible violation of the Digital
09:36Services Act by TikTok.
09:44Protests in Georgia entered a 13th day despite arrests and physical attacks against activists
09:50and opposition figures.
09:53Protesters gathered outside the Georgian Parliament building in Tbilisi, chanting and blocking
09:57the street.
09:59Police have detained an increasing number of people as the crackdown on anti-government
10:03protests intensifies.
10:08The ruling Georgian Dream retained control of parliament in the disputed October 26th
10:13election, a vote widely seen as a referendum on Georgia's EU aspirations.
10:19The opposition and pro-Western president have accused the governing party of rigging the
10:23vote with neighbouring Russia's help.
10:28Protesters say they will continue to demonstrate against this injustice for as long as it takes
10:33until their demands are met.
10:36If you don't like our government, you don't like us.
10:44Fishermen in Spain continued their strike protesting proposed European cuts that would
10:49largely restrict the number of days they can fish in the Mediterranean.
10:54The European Union wants to decrease the number of fishing days for Mediterranean trawlers
10:59by 79% in an effort to improve fish stocks and protect biodiversity.
11:05Protesters argue that these cuts would badly harm Spain's economy and damage the fishing
11:10industry.
11:12They also believe the EU's plan is based on flawed data and does not take local fishermen's
11:17concerns into account.
11:20Representatives within the fishing industry agree that the proposal could lead to the
11:24disappearance of trawling.
11:26The field reportedly employs around 3,000 people on board and generates a further 17,000
11:32jobs indirectly.
11:35EU fishery ministers are continuing to discuss the proposal in Brussels.
