First Flashmob in Dubai

00:00A man tying his shoelaces in the mall of the emirates. It looks nothing out of the ordinary

00:11but this was the secret signal for a handful of people who wanted to stir up a bit of fun.

00:16It was Dubai's first ever flash mob, an internet craze made famous around the world for mass

00:22spontaneous stunts of silliness in public. But this one became more of a brief curiosity

00:28for shoppers. Still, the hardy few who froze for five minutes in the middle of the mall

00:34managed to grab some attention. But judging by the security guards who rushed over to

00:48the statue like people, Dubai might not be ready for this kind of impulsive fun.

00:58How did you hear about this flash mob? Well, I heard it from her and she heard it on Facebook.

01:06Yeah, my brother told me about it and we watched it on YouTube.

01:10I was so excited, like I'm still shaking, you know. It was cool.

01:15I got a little bit afraid that they might try to remove us or like call an ambulance

01:19that there was something wrong because I guess the word didn't get through all the security

01:23that the piece of art was happening so they started interfering but then some of the other

01:27security came and told them what was happening and then it was fine after that.

01:31Had you ever heard of flash mobbing, the name of the activity that they were doing?

01:36No.

01:37Flash mobs are meant to shock the public for an instant but in the mall of the Emirates,

01:42getting the go ahead was not such an easy task.

01:45They never knew or heard about a flash mob before so I had to talk to them and show them

01:50all the videos that I saw on YouTube and to give them a better picture of the flash mob

01:55and I think after that they understood how the flash mob was going to be like and they

02:04agreed to do it.

02:05Flash mobs in London or New York can bring together hundreds of people in one place taking

02:11part in pillow fights or opera renditions. This was more of a flash in the pan than a

02:16flash mob but in the true spirit of flash mobbing, organisers vow they'll be back soon

02:22to take us all by surprise.
