Dems win the house - US Midterm Elections
Transcript
00:00Good morning, everybody, and welcome back to Gulf News coverage of the 2018 midterm
00:07elections.
00:08All right, this will probably be our last video for the morning.
00:11It looks like we have the vote counts come through, which will help to determine who
00:15will have control of the U.S. government.
00:18Looks like the Senate is going to go to the Republicans and the House is going to go to
00:22the Democrats.
00:23Yeah, the Senate has officially been controlled by the Republicans.
00:28They've retained their majority there.
00:30Almost all of the seats there have been called so far.
00:34Just a handful left remaining out there to be called.
00:40But as I've said, Republicans will continue to retain their majority in the Senate.
00:45In the House, it's getting called a little bit early.
00:47We still have voting going on in California, Oregon, and Washington, but right now Democrats
00:51are predicted to pick up about 36 votes, which will give them a majority.
00:57We're looking at a 231-seat Democrats and about 204 seats for Republicans, so a sizable
01:04majority for them.
01:06That could change before the end of the night, but more than likely Democrats will walk away
01:10with control of the House.
01:12It's also worth pointing out that whilst the blue wave came under some scrutiny sort of
01:18halfway through the night, there has been a sort of discernible women wave among the
01:24Democrats.
01:25Yes, women candidates have done extremely well, so perhaps some sign there for looking
01:31ahead to the 2020 presidential elections that the Democrats would be well-placed to put
01:35a woman at the front.
01:36Yeah, and a couple of women winning from interesting positions.
01:39We have our first two Muslim women entering the U.S. House, and just coming across looks
01:44like two Native American women for the first time, too.
01:48So some interesting wins out there tonight for the House.
01:51All right, so you can keep following us at gulfnews.com.
01:55We will update with various numbers and new results as they come through until we're all
01:59finished, which probably won't be until around noon Dubai time.
02:02So thank you for watching this evening.
02:04We appreciate it.
02:06This evening and well into this morning, and talk to you soon.
