00:00While Helicopter Ila is a perfect example of a well-cast film,
00:04what lets this movie down is the utopian treatment.
00:13All the problems that usually single parents, whether you're a helicopter parent or a drone
00:18parent or a hands-off parent, it's glossed over. Somehow, the problems that a single
00:23parent faces when her husband deserts her is not fully explored. That arc is somehow
00:30not developed and that's a disappointment. It's almost like Kajol's on-screen husband
00:34leaves her on a whim and comes back on a whim. It's not very believable.
00:39But however, this movie is also progressive on many fronts. The relationship between Kajol
00:45and her on-screen mother-in-law is beautifully brought out. It brings a smile to your face.
00:50Now, if you're familiar with Hindi films, often the parental figures are pushed to the periphery,
00:54they're just secondary cast. But here is a movie that focuses on the trials and triumphs of a
00:59single parent. That of a mother who's trying her best to bring up her son in the way that she
01:05knows best. But Ila gets it often wrong. She's a flawed mother who thinks stalking is normal.
01:11She's one of the mothers that is in a way very funny. She thinks that feeding him right or
01:17packing him tiffins to his college is one way of being a good parent. While the first half is
01:22all about showcasing Ila's eccentricities towards her son, her sole son, the second half is about
01:29her finding her own identity. If you ask me, I like the second half to the first half because
01:34it gains momentum and there's a lot more happening. The first half drags a bit so you have to
01:40remain patient and be a part of Ila's life. It moves at a quite a languid pace and if you're
01:45not used to that you might find yourself checking your phone. Perhaps the climax, the way it ends
01:50and how it ends for Ila and how she finds herself may come across as very easy and too simplistic
01:57and perhaps a bit too utopian. That's a small blip in an otherwise enjoyable film. I have gone with
02:033 out of 5. For my full review, go to gulfnews.com slash tabloid and have a great weekend.
