Transcript
00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday, October 6.
00:05Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:07US President Barack Obama want that Hurricane Matthew could have a devastating effect as
00:12the residents of the southeastern coastline braced themselves for one of the most powerful
00:16storms to hit the region in almost a decade.
00:18According to the US National Hurricane Center, the deadly Category 3 hurricane was roughly
00:23169 km south of Long Island in the Bahamas.
00:27More than 2 million residents have been evacuated.
00:30Syria's military announced that it was scaling back its bombardment of rebels in the devastated
00:35Aleppo in a surprise move nearly two weeks after declaring an all-out assault to capture
00:40the city.
00:41It said the bombardment would be reduced after the success of armed forces in Aleppo and
00:46cutting off all terrorist supply routes into the eastern districts.
00:50The FBI secretly arrested a former National Security Agency contractor in August.
00:55It is investigating whether he stole and disclosed a highly classified computer code
00:59developed by the agency to hack into the networks of foreign governments.
01:04The arrest raises the embarrassing prospect that, for the second time in three years,
01:08a contractor for the consulting company Booz Allen Hamilton managed to steal highly damaging
01:13secret information while working for the NSA.
01:16In 2013, Edward J. Snowden, who was also a Booz Allen contractor, took a vast trove of
01:21documents from the agency that were later passed to journalists, exposing surveillance
01:25programs in the United States and abroad.
01:28French Open organisers have not ruled out handing Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova
01:32a wild card to participate in the Grand Slam event next year.
01:36Sharapova has been serving a two-year suspension for the violation of anti-doping regulations
01:40since January 26.
01:42The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled to reduce Sharapova's suspension term from 24
01:47to 15 months.
01:48The Russian player is now eligible to officially return to tennis courts starting April 26
01:53next year.
01:54And finally, the weather.
01:55Today's high across the UAE will be 34 degrees Celsius, dropping to 26 degrees at night.
01:59That's all for now.
02:00Thanks for watching.
