Cancer survivor Muhammad Asif Shaik Saffarudin is a step closer to achieving his ambition of becoming an engineer after graduating as the top student in his class with a Bachelor of Engineering in electronics, majoring in Telecommunications from Multimedia University (MMU) on Saturday (Dec 7).
Muhammad Asif was diagnosed with early acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was only 10 years old and was declared cancer-free when he was 17.

00:37His perseverance was recognised
00:39when he received the Chancellor's Award
00:41during MMU's 25th convocation at its Cyberjaya campus.
00:46You see, when I was receiving my treatment,
00:49it's how I would think every day
00:52whether tomorrow would be my last day or not.
00:55So, I guess it just instilled in me
00:59a sort of value that, you know,
01:00you have to make the most out of everything.
01:02And despite starting university,
01:05I think this is when it actually started worsening.
01:08I thought of that every day.
01:11And, I don't know, maybe that's what drove me
01:13to go for all these events,
01:17all these programmes,
01:18try to improve myself constantly.
01:20Reflecting on the award,
01:22Mohamad Asif credited his success
01:24to his mother's unwavering encouragement
01:26through their challenges.
01:27My mum, she had this dream
01:30that all her children would one day
01:33become doctors, lawyers, engineers,
01:36and they would be able to change
01:40the quality of our life as a family.
01:44So, with that dream in hand,
01:45she set out to actually educate all of us.
01:49The Chancellor's Award, MMU's highest accolade,
01:52honours the top graduate for academic excellence,
01:55extracurricular contributions, and leadership.
01:58In the same ceremony,
02:00Sultan of Pahang,
02:01Al-Sultan Abdullah Riayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah,
02:04and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tengku Aziza,
02:07Aminah Maimunah Iskandaria
02:08were also conferred honorary doctorate degrees of management
02:11in recognition for their remarkable contributions to the field.
02:15More than 3,000 graduates are set to receive their diploma,
02:18bachelor's, master's and doctorate scrolls
02:21during the convocation ceremony from November 7th to 9th.
