00:00So a speech to Chris Columbus during Chris Columbus Month is quite a treat.
00:05Can I say, first and foremost, thank you very much as a film fan, thank you very much for
00:09the magic that you've given to my life over the years.
00:11Oh thank you so much.
00:12From my gremlins to Goonies to Home Alone to the Potter movies, a through line, not
00:18just at Christmas, but throughout has been your movies and they've warmed me in ways
00:22that many other movies haven't done so.
00:25I didn't want to sound too sycophantic at the start by the way.
00:27No it's not.
00:28I appreciate it.
00:29Goonies, which is weird, usually starts in the States at Thanksgiving, so from Thanksgiving
00:33to January 1st.
00:34Inescapable.
00:35And it's a great thing.
00:36I can't escape like seven different films, which is fantastic.
00:40Well you've made a lot of people very warm and fuzzy and happy at Christmastime, now
00:43you seem to be returning to scare the living Jesus out of it.
00:47Why is that?
00:48Are you just getting more sadistic as you get older or what?
00:51No, I actually believe that Christmastime, you know, it started really in gremlins.
00:59Gremlins, I said at Christmastime because I always felt that it was a safe, comfortable
01:03time for most people, and if you sort of lose your edge a little bit, that's when bad things
01:09can happen, so Christmas just always feels appropriate, particularly for a horror film.
01:15You're a man who has spread yourself across cinema over the years, you've written some
01:21incredibly successful films, you've directed some incredibly successful films, and of course
01:24you've produced them as well.
01:27Is it about just scratching different itches for you, or do you get as much satisfaction
01:33from being behind the camera on something like this as you would do when you're front
01:38and centre?
01:39Well I think for something like Nosferatu, I get a tremendous amount of enjoyment and
01:46inspiration because I'm watching someone like Robert Eggers.
01:49To be honest with you, if it were a filmmaker who was sort of pedestrian and not interesting,
01:54I would be out of there in a week or so, but the opportunity to sort of work 24 hours
01:59a day with Rob, or at least 12 hours a day with Rob, but thinking about it 24 hours a
02:05day, you get into that world and you see his commitment to film and his commitment to this
02:10particular project, which he's been thinking about since he was 9 years old.
02:14So when you're on that type of film set, even at my age I learn from it.
02:18I take away what he sort of brings to it and then I bring it to the next film I direct.
02:24I just finished a film called Thursday Murder Club, which is a pretty big Richard Osman's
02:28book, and I had done Nosferatu before that and I took some of the lessons I learned from
02:34Nosferatu and applied it to Thursday Murder Club.
02:37And speaking about the future, on my way here I did walk past the Harry Potter and the Cursed
02:40Child play.
02:42There was a bit of clamour, myself included, that I would have liked to see what you would
02:45have done with that story down the line.
02:47Perhaps as the original cast, do you think that the upcoming launch of the series on
02:53Max, which is going to go through all of these years of Hogwarts, do you think that kind
02:56of puts an end to the idea of the future of more movies with Daniel maybe and with Rupert?
03:02I don't think it puts an end to it.
03:04I really look forward to seeing what they're going to do with Max because they have an
03:07opportunity by doing one book per year, 10 episodes, to include all the wonderful things
03:13that we could not fit into one feature film.
03:15So I can't wait to see what they do with that.
03:18In terms of Cursed Child, it's a dream of mine.
03:20It's a dream.
03:21I would only do it by reuniting with the original cast and I would love to make that
03:26film because I see it in my head.
03:28It plays in my head a couple of times a week and I would love to make that film.
03:34Few things have to fall into place, to say the least, but it's a dream of mine.
03:39Hopefully someday.
03:40Well, we'd like to watch it.
03:41Hopefully before Daniel and Emma aren't in their 80s.
03:43Indeed, indeed.
03:44But right now, let's just get terrified with Nosferatu, shall we?
03:48Excellent.
03:49I'd love to say to Chris Kilmer, Merry Christmas.
03:51Merry Christmas.
03:52Happy Christmas everyone.
03:54Cheers, buddy.
