00:06As a kid, I was really, really afraid of stuff.
00:09And in making horror movies, I get to explore fear
00:13and also control it.
00:15Hi, I'm Robert Eggers, and this is the origin story
00:18of Nosferatu.
00:24When I was about eight or nine, with the help of my mom,
00:27we acquired a VHS of Nosferatu.
00:29And I was just really struck by how this version
00:34distilled the Dracula story into a very simple fairy tale.
00:38The past really speaks to me.
00:40So it's most interesting for me to think about who we are
00:44and where we're going from where we came from.
00:46When I was in high school, I had the idea of doing
00:49Nosferatu as a stage play that would be a silent film
00:53on stage with black-and-white makeup,
00:55black-and-white costumes, and super titles.
00:58And I thought maybe it was a silly idea,
01:00but my friend Ashley Kelly-Teda said,
01:02no, that's a cool idea.
01:03So we directed it together, and it cemented the fact
01:06that I wanted to be a director when I grew up.
01:10With your first feature, you have all these ideas
01:13about the movies you've wanted to make
01:15that have been brewing and growing with you,
01:17and then they all come out in your first feature,
01:19which becomes, like, very personal because of that,
01:21even if you're still finding your footing
01:23and finding your voice.
01:25But because Nosferatu's been with me for so long,
01:27it is arguably as personal because I've been working
01:30on this film for 10 years or more.
01:33It was challenging to find something
01:35that truly belonged to me.
01:37It required writing a rich backstory for Orlok
01:39and a very rich backstory for Ellen
01:42so that I could then do my simple fairy tale,
01:45but with a different kind of perspective.
01:49It's sort of a strange feeling to actually be excited
01:53to share the movie for real.
01:56That weird feeling makes me a little more vulnerable
01:58about it as well, but I hope people enjoy it.
02:01We are here encountering the undead plague carrier.
02:08Nosferatu.
02:26Nosferatu.
