00:00Hi, I am Tegan Robertson and I'm a hair artist at Shallows.
00:04This is our third video with Shallows Studio, a shining example of the type of business that can flourish here in Manchester and specifically in Manchester's gay village.
00:11We've already spoken to Alana and Tawny and today we're going to talk to Tegan.
00:15So I have been at Shallows since about February. In the beginning I was working between Manchester, Brighton and London.
00:24I've been a hairdresser since I was about 20. I went to fashion school, was there for two years, was very naughty, got kicked out after two.
00:32And actually the reason why I wanted to get into fashion was because I was always obsessed with drag queens and I wanted to create drag queen ball gowns and all of that jazz.
00:41And I was watching my favourite film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and while I was watching it I was like, oh my god, they have amazing hair.
00:48I got an apprenticeship within the next two days because I think for me I'm someone that struggles with ADHD.
00:55However, hairdressing, I've really found something that I can be creative with. No two days are the same, every client's different, so it really piques my interest.
01:05I think I've worked in a lot of very cool, very trendy spaces, especially in East London, and a lot of them are quite intimidating, they're quite scary.
01:13But I think that is the last thing Shallows is, everyone feels welcome here.
01:16What I've noticed, there's so much more alternative people in Manchester than there is anywhere else, and I don't know if it is because it's such an accepting place, so people feel comfortable.
01:27I don't feel like I stick out, even if I go to a Wetherspoons, so I feel like it encourages people to be who they are.
01:33You know what, I feel like hair is a very easy and quick way to express yourself, so it's a really good way to kind of match the inside to the outside.
01:43For instance, it's a really powerful tool for, say, a trans person, you know.
01:47It's the first way, if they want to feel more feminine, they can grow their hair out.
01:52If they want to feel more masculine, they can go for more of a barber cut.
01:55So it's a really beautiful way to be able to instantly express how you feel on the inside.
