00:00Nightly greetings one and all, Denise Osori here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV
00:10News Now.
00:11Kicking off our breaking stories tonight, the Justice Department and the country's
00:15premier state university inked a deal to jointly review and update the country's codified
00:20set of criminal laws institutionalized in 1932, more than 92 years back.
00:26Justice Undersecretary Raul Vazquez, who signed on behalf of the DOJ, said the work is tentatively
00:31set for completion by June next year, after which the draft copy of the updated revised
00:36penal code will be sent to Congress for ratification into law.
00:41Vazquez added some 10,000 pieces of legislation or laws of the land have been added to the
00:46revised penal code since 1932.
00:49For her part, UP College of Law Dean Darlene Berberabe said today's deal signing manifests
00:56the shared commitment between the UP and the DOJ in reinforcing the administration
01:01of justice and the rule of law in the country.
01:04Quite a number of laws contained in existing revised penal code are outdated or obsolete
01:10and need updating in the context of the times, one of which is the law on adultery, whose
01:15provisions smack of unfairness and inequality in application.
01:22The electric vehicle sector or industry is on a surge worldwide, to include the United
01:27States, and manufacturers are rosy on an uninterrupted streak with Elon Musk as one of Trump's closest
01:34advisors.
01:35VOA's Geneva Doolot filed this report from the Los Angeles Auto Show.
01:41Earlier in his presidential campaign, Donald Trump bashed Joe Biden for backing electric
01:47vehicles.
01:48Think of this.
01:49He wants electric vehicle mandates that will spell the death of the U.S. auto industry.
01:56In his campaign's closing month, Trump got a big boost from electric vehicle CEO Elon
02:01Musk.
02:02He created the first major American car company in generations, and his rocket company is
02:09the only reason we can now send American astronauts into space.
02:17As you can see, I'm not just MAGA, I'm dark MAGA.
02:22Since Trump's win, Musk has agreed to join his new government to help improve efficiency.
02:28Musk has also seen share prices for his electric vehicle firm Tesla jump more than 25% since
02:35election day, topping $1 trillion in market value for the first time in two years.
02:41So what are electric vehicle manufacturers expecting from a Trump team that includes
02:47the Tesla chief?
02:49At the LA Auto Show, Shiv Sikand is showing off the quad motor, all-electric Draker supercar.
02:56It's super exciting to think that, you know, Elon is there and the president is taking
03:04very seriously and I think will be very powerful for American industry, not just electric cars.
03:11Right across the spectrum, our goal is to be more competitive, particularly, you know,
03:15in the threat of foreign competition.
03:17With Trump promising import tariffs, electric vehicles built in the United States may be
03:23more competitive.
03:24South Korean automaker Hyundai will build its Ioniq 9 electric truck in the U.S. state
03:31of Georgia, says company spokesman Miles Johnson.
03:34An Ioniq 9 will be built there.
03:37There are two battery joint venture plants going into Georgia as well, so the batteries
03:42will be sourced in the U.S. market and the vehicles will be produced in the U.S. market.
03:48So we're committed to the U.S. market.
03:51Electric vehicle manufacturers are also mindful that Trump may end the $7,500 federal tax
03:58credit for EV buyers.
04:00John Thomas of Ampure Charging Systems says it is part of the market's evolution.
04:06Hopefully you're not incentivizing something forever, right, at the end of the day.
04:10Hopefully the incentive is what kicks off an industry and then you slowly pull that
04:14back.
04:15And I think that's been things we've seen in Europe.
04:17The vehicle guide Kelley Blue Book says a record 1.2 million electric vehicles were
04:24sold in the United States last year, accounting for more than 7% of the total U.S. vehicle
04:31market.
04:32Jenny Edulo, VOA News, Los Angeles.
04:39At this juncture, let's turn to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Studios for what's hot
04:44and happening in the Cordilleras.
04:46Audrey?
05:02This is the Regional Dengue Disease Surveillance Unit, the Department of Health.
05:05There are 20 cases in Dengue, in the province of Benguet, of 10,200.
05:10In Baguio City, there are 88,200.
05:14In Mountain Province, there are 3,000.
05:16In Kalinga and Fugao, there are 2,000.
05:19In Baitakababa and Abra, there are 5,000 cases.
05:23There are 40 cases on the list.
05:27These are just factors.
05:30You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:34You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:37You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:40You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:43You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:46You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:49You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:52You either don't know what's going on, or you don't know what's going on.
05:55You either do it, or you do not do it.
05:58Of course, those who don't do it, they contribute.
06:01They don't follow the 4S, they contribute to increasing cases.
06:05The amount of illegal drugs that were confiscated from the Police Regional Office
06:12in Cordillera Administrative Region has increased to 80 million pesos.
06:14The Anti-Illegal Drug Campaign was launched in November.
06:19In November, 1 to 30, the Police were involved in 62 marijuana eradications,
06:269 by-bust operations, 4 search warrant implementations,
06:308 warrants of arrest services, and 6 police responses.
06:34As a result, 88 grams of shabu were confiscated,
06:38which is equivalent to 148,000 fully grown marijuana plants.
06:42Marijuana seedlings, dried marijuana leaves, and fruiting tops,
06:47as well as marijuana oil.
06:4827 drug personalities were involved in the operation.
06:5217 were high-value individuals, and 10 were street-level individuals.
06:57The Benguet Police Provincial Office and the Mountain Province PPO
07:02were also involved in the operation.
07:06This is Audrey Villena, reporting for PTV Cordillera.
