People often say that the greatest Indian Test victory is either the 2001 Kolkata Test or the 2021 Gabba Test. Both of these are great Indian victories. But the greatest Indian Test victory came in 1976. The date was April 12, 1976. India was up against the mighty West Indies, a side led by the charismatic Clive Lloyd and boasting one of the fiercest fast-bowling attacks the world had ever seen. However, they had only two pacers in this test match because of Trinidad's pitch. It helps spinners more, and we saw that in the first innings when BS Chandrasekhar and Bishan Singh Bedi picked up all the ten wickets. But that was not the case when West Indies started bowling; they restricted India to 228, taking a lead of 131. But it was Michael Holding who picked up six wickets.
West Indies declared on 271, thinking their spinners would easily defend 403 on the fourth and fifth-day pitch—not a bad strategy.
For India, the challenge was monumental. India was 1-0 down after the first two tests, and a 400-plus score had only been successfully chased once in test cricket. Nobody gave India a chance, but India’s top order went berserk.
Sunil Gavaskar opened the innings and gave India a solid start, playing spin with the finesse that earned him legendary status. Then, the fearless counterattacking spirit of Gundappa Viswanath turned the tide. The elegant stroke-maker dismantled the West Indian attack, scoring a sublime 112 runs. Indian top-order played West Indian spin too well. India lost Vishwanath at 336 and Mohinder Amarnath at 392 to runouts, but by then, the damage was done. Brijesh Patel scored 49 and took India home. India scored 406 and won the match by six wickets. It was the highest-ever successful chase in test cricket, a record for 27 years until West Indies broke it against Australia at Antigua by chasing 418 runs, another great chase.
