Czestochowa is the second largest town after Katowice in the Silesian Voivodeship. The city on the Warta river is known worldwide for the icon of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa in Jasna Góra Monastery. Częstochowa is completely oriented around this fortified monastery complex at the top of a limestone hill, and has a monumental avenue leading down from the site through parks and into the new and old quarters of the city.
