00:00A sharp response from China, upset that President Lai Ching-de will transit in Hawaii and possibly
00:07the overseas U.S. territory of Guam during his first official overseas trip as the president
00:13of Taiwan.
00:14Lai will visit Tuvalu, Palau and the Marshall Islands, three of Taiwan's remaining diplomatic
00:20allies, in a trip beginning November 30th.
00:24China is accusing Lai of seeking independence by relying on outside forces and violating
00:29the one-China principle.
00:31Taiwan can't schedule official visits to places like the U.S. due to pressure from China,
00:36but even this, a simple stopover in Hawaii, has prompted China to urge Washington, D.C.
00:43not to allow Lai to land on U.S. soil and to stop enabling what they call Taiwan's separatist
00:50forces.
00:51Any attempts to create a one-China, one-Taiwan, one-China, one-China violation of the one-China
00:58principle will be opposed by the entire Chinese people.
01:03We urge the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communique regulations
01:09in China and the U.S. and to stop sending any wrong signals to Taiwan's separatist forces.
01:17A group of U.S. Congress members have sent an official letter to U.S. President Joe Biden
01:22and Secretary of State Antony Blinken requesting they allow Lai's transit and even that they
01:28actively meet with him during his transit in Hawaii.
01:32There's no comment yet from the White House or from Taiwan, but a meeting seems unlikely
01:38and would be seen as highly provocative.
01:42Taiwan's and regional security officials are already anticipating that China's likely
01:48to carry out some large-scale military exercises around Taiwan to coincide with Lai's overseas
01:55trip to the Pacific.
