00:00:00Okay, Leo, let's get ready.
00:00:30Alright, Pixie's all good to go.
00:00:32Great. Are the little gift bags in the car?
00:00:34Yeah, all packed away.
00:00:36Thanks, James.
00:00:37Okay, off we go.
00:00:49How about down here?
00:00:57Oh, hey, Caleb.
00:00:58Hi. Sorry, where are we?
00:01:01Oh, no, you're fine. I'll take you back. Come on.
00:01:03And bring it back.
00:01:07Great. So how have the exercises been going at home?
00:01:12Fine.
00:01:14How's the walking part going?
00:01:16Okay.
00:01:17Do you have anyone at home to help steady you? Your mom or dad?
00:01:21They flew back to Kansas.
00:01:23Already?
00:01:24I needed some quiet.
00:01:26So who's helping you?
00:01:28I can do it on my own.
00:01:30What about them?
00:01:31Thanks for having us back.
00:01:32Oh, we love it when you come.
00:01:33Oh, great. The dogs are here. They come by every year at Christmas time.
00:01:37Okay, so go ahead and start on leg raises, and I'll get some resistance bands, and then I'll meet you over there.
00:01:53So this is Pixie.
00:01:55How long have you had her?
00:01:56I've had her for about two years now.
00:01:58Such a good boy. So sweet.
00:02:01Thank you for coming.
00:02:03My pleasure.
00:02:05Oh.
00:02:06Hey, Ann.
00:02:07Merry Christmas.
00:02:08Oh, thank you very much.
00:02:19Hi. This is Leo. Can we sit for a minute?
00:02:23Sure, I guess.
00:02:28I'm Amber. I run Davenport Animal Haven.
00:02:32What's your name?
00:02:34Caleb.
00:02:35Nice to meet you, Caleb.
00:02:37Don't worry. He's friendly.
00:02:41Okay, Leo. Sit.
00:02:44Good boy.
00:02:45So, can I tell you about him?
00:02:47Yeah.
00:02:49Leo here was at the shelter, and when I would tidy his kennel, he'd sit by my side, just smiling and waiting.
00:02:57And then he would lick my hand afterwards, kind of like he was saying thanks.
00:03:02And I would take him on walks, and he would then look up every few steps, like checking to see if I was as happy as he was.
00:03:09And, you know, I wanted him to be happy all the time.
00:03:13So I adopted him, and ended up finding my best friend.
00:03:17That sounds like you're both pretty lucky.
00:03:19Yeah. Now, he loves coming on visits, and he loves Christmas.
00:03:23How can you tell?
00:03:25His tail wags more. And he loves to take naps by the Christmas tree.
00:03:29How do you know he's not just finding a warmer spot in the wintertime?
00:03:32Because he'll nap by the Christmas tree at my apartment and at the shelter.
00:03:37And I even move the trees around each year, and he always goes back to them.
00:03:41Quirky dog.
00:03:43Yeah, he is. Fun personalities. Just like us.
00:03:49So, do you have any fun Christmas plans?
00:03:52Not really.
00:03:54It's probably hard to focus on anything when you're working so hard to get better.
00:03:59Yeah, it's hard to ignore.
00:04:02Here. Close your eyes.
00:04:05Why?
00:04:06Just try it with me.
00:04:08Are you one of those psychologists?
00:04:10No. Just a girl with a dog.
00:04:13Okay.
00:04:17Now what?
00:04:19Okay. Imagine you aren't here.
00:04:22Nothing hurts. It's Christmas.
00:04:26Where are you, and what are you doing?
00:04:29I'm...
00:04:32I don't know.
00:04:34Come on. There's no right or wrong answer.
00:04:38Fine.
00:04:41I'm...
00:04:43outside.
00:04:47Is that it?
00:04:48I'm still thinking.
00:04:50Okay. Sorry. Keep going.
00:04:52I'm on a mountain with fresh snow.
00:04:56And the air is cold, but I like it.
00:05:00And I'm at the top of the slope looking down, and I'm ready to ski.
00:05:06I like that.
00:05:10So you're a skier?
00:05:12I've been a few times, but it's more so that I'd be able to do it.
00:05:16And I wouldn't be worried about my leg being weak or scarred.
00:05:20Maybe one day you won't even think about it.
00:05:25There's more to you than your hardest days.
00:05:29Like what?
00:05:31Like...
00:05:33your smile.
00:05:35It's a great one.
00:05:37See? Don't make me get out my mirror.
00:05:40Please don't. I will take your word for it.
00:05:43Good.
00:05:45And where would you be at Christmas?
00:05:48I would be inside a cozy cabin, sitting by a warm fire.
00:05:54And I'd be painting.
00:05:56And what's the painting of?
00:06:00Leo, napping by a Christmas tree.
00:06:04Are you an artist?
00:06:06No. Maybe if things were different, but I'm doing what I need to do right now.
00:06:11I do paint for fun, every now and then, when I have time.
00:06:15Well, I'd like to see that painting.
00:06:18Really?
00:06:20Well, if I do it, you'll have to stop by the shelter to see it.
00:06:24You'd hang it up there?
00:06:25Sure. At least at Christmastime.
00:06:29Hi there.
00:06:30Hello.
00:06:32Well, I guess I should stop disturbing you.
00:06:35I mean, for stopping by, not for disturbing me.
00:06:40I'm glad we got to chat.
00:06:42Anytime you want to say hi to Leo or any of the other animals, stop by the shelter.
00:06:47Okay. Thank you.
00:06:51Merry Christmas, Caleb.
00:06:53Merry Christmas.
00:06:55Come on, Leo.
00:06:59All right. The red one or the purple one?
00:07:05All right.
00:07:14Thank you so much, Pastor.
00:07:16Take care. See you Sunday.
00:07:18Okay. Bye.
00:07:20Maybe some wood glue would help secure it.
00:07:23I have a thicker bolt in place. Should do the trick.
00:07:27Thank you for doing this.
00:07:28No thanks needed.
00:07:30You want to grab some lunch?
00:07:32Yeah, sure.
00:07:34Hey, how's the job search going?
00:07:36On hold.
00:07:38Oh?
00:07:39What I've been doing so far has been...
00:07:41Not your cup of tea?
00:07:43Yeah. I think I'm rushing into the career and it's not working out.
00:07:48That office-bound marketing job had you climbing up the walls.
00:07:51Mm-hmm. Yep.
00:07:53Well, this is good. Take your time.
00:07:56And remember, when I left the Army, I had this idea that I had to have everything figured out.
00:08:01But it's okay to take some time.
00:08:03It's only been a year for you, you know?
00:08:06More than that.
00:08:07Well, since the accident, sure.
00:08:09But then you had your surgery and your recovery took a long time to get through.
00:08:14Maybe keep an eye out for something that's more fulfilling.
00:08:18You trying to get me to become a pastor?
00:08:20If that's what you want.
00:08:22But I think there are better options for you that would be more meaningful.
00:08:27There's always the veterans groups.
00:08:29There's somebody that would need your experience, you know?
00:08:31You could always volunteer temporarily.
00:08:34Maybe.
00:08:36All right. Burgers or tacos?
00:08:39Mmm. Burgers.
00:08:41There's that new place on Everett Parkway. Pick-Me-Up-A-Combo?
00:08:45Pick-Up?
00:08:46I asked you if you wanted to grab lunch.
00:08:49Walked right into that one.
00:08:51It's on me.
00:08:53Thanks.
00:08:56Hello.
00:08:57Hi, how are you?
00:08:58Nice to see you.
00:08:59You too.
00:09:00There.
00:09:07Is it straight?
00:09:10You were no help.
00:09:12Hey, James, is this straight?
00:09:15Close enough.
00:09:17Okay, good.
00:09:19Okay, guys. Let's get everyone something to eat and drink.
00:09:25Hello.
00:09:26Hi, Ryan. I didn't know you were coming.
00:09:28The best kind of surprise, right? Especially when you have this.
00:09:32What's that?
00:09:33See for yourself.
00:09:36Oh, wow. Ryan, you already donated to the shelter this year.
00:09:40Yeah, well, my accountant says I could use the deduction, so there you go.
00:09:44Thank you. This is so helpful.
00:09:46The cost of running this place keeps going up, especially because we're at capacity.
00:09:50Glad I could help.
00:09:51You put so much time into this place. You could use a break, I'm sure.
00:09:56Yeah, well, the animals can always use another break.
00:09:59Anytime I have, I like to give them extra attention.
00:10:01But you can't overdo it and burn yourself out.
00:10:04I won't.
00:10:06Well, put that to good use, then, and take it easy, okay?
00:10:10I'll try. And thank you again, really.
00:10:13Happy to. Well, I'll see you later.
00:10:17Okay, have a great day.
00:10:20Wasn't that so nice?
00:10:22Yeah.
00:10:24I think he likes you.
00:10:25What? No, he doesn't.
00:10:27He's a patient of my dad's dental practice.
00:10:29He's just being supportive of a good cause.
00:10:33Sure.
00:10:54Wait a second.
00:11:25Hi. How can I help you?
00:11:29Sorry, you probably don't remember me. I was at the Veterans Clinic this time last year.
00:11:34And I, um...
00:11:37Leo, right?
00:11:39That's right.
00:11:43Wait. Caleb?
00:11:46Yeah. Good memory.
00:11:49Your leg. You're walking well.
00:11:51Thanks. It took some time, but it's fine now, as long as I'm not hiking.
00:11:56That's good. Unless you love hiking.
00:11:59Uh, so I came by because, well, I saw the sign and thought maybe you could use a hand.
00:12:05Like a volunteer.
00:12:07Oh. Yeah, that'd be great. Volunteers are awesome.
00:12:11We can sure use the help, especially with the Christmas adoption drive coming up.
00:12:14But it is not glamorous.
00:12:16Is it supposed to be?
00:12:18Just warning you, I have one person who works here when he's not in class.
00:12:21I'm pretty much here all the time, but an extra set of hands would be very welcome.
00:12:25Great. Well, thanks. Uh, can I have your number?
00:12:28Uh, you know, so that we can coordinate schedules and such.
00:12:32Of course.
00:12:37Okay. The shelter info is on the front, and then my cell's on the back.
00:12:41Great. Thank you.
00:12:43Thanks for stopping by.
00:12:45I'll see you soon.
00:12:47Bye, Leo.
00:12:53What do you think, Leo?
00:12:58Hmm.
00:13:00I stopped by an animal shelter while I was out.
00:13:02Why?
00:13:03It was the one that brought the dogs by the Veterans Clinic when I was doing my PT.
00:13:06That was a while ago.
00:13:08Yeah, it stuck with me. I was thinking maybe it's a good way for me to keep busy right now.
00:13:12As a job, or...?
00:13:13Hmm. Volunteering.
00:13:15Like you said, I don't need to rush into work, but this felt safe enough for right now.
00:13:20I think that's good. Especially with Christmas. A good time for friends. And family.
00:13:26I'm just saying.
00:13:28I'm fine on my own. Don't worry about me.
00:13:32Have it for my Army Chaplain days. I'm not going to change either.
00:13:38Hi, Caleb. It's Dad.
00:13:55Um, we decided not to go on our trip we planned over Christmas.
00:13:59Nothing's wrong. Just didn't work out.
00:14:02Anyway, we wanted to see if you wanted to come out.
00:14:05If you're not too busy. Just, you know, no pressure.
00:14:09But if you can, we'd love to have you.
00:14:12We missed you last year.
00:14:15We miss you.
00:14:17Okay, let us know.
00:14:36Are you sure it's this box, too? I guess it has Easter stuff in here.
00:14:40Yep. Just dig a little.
00:14:42You could separate the decorations.
00:14:44I get lazy when I'm putting them away.
00:14:46Easter stuff goes with Valentines and Halloween, but that box was hard to reach.
00:14:51Great effort. Got it.
00:14:55Ah! These ones!
00:15:01Hey, is your brother coming in to help still?
00:15:05Yeah, he said he was coaching tonight, but he promised he'd be by after the basketball game.
00:15:08Okay, good.
00:15:10Hey, when is your shelter adoption thing this year?
00:15:13December 23rd.
00:15:15Can I leave flyers here?
00:15:17Of course.
00:15:18Great. I'm just trying to come up with a catchy slogan, and then I'll print them out.
00:15:21Oh, how about, save a dog, put a smile on your kid's face?
00:15:28It's a nice thought, but I'm not sure about that one.
00:15:32What about all those statistics about how many animals need homes?
00:15:36Guilting people into adopting? Not the best strategy.
00:15:40I'm out of ideas, then.
00:15:42Hello.
00:15:43Hi.
00:15:44Hey.
00:15:45Okay, what do you need me to do?
00:15:48Too late for the heavy lifting. That tree was a beast to set up.
00:15:52You're incredibly strong for your size. I thought you could handle it.
00:15:55There should be a couple more boxes in the back if you could bring those out.
00:15:58Okay, got it.
00:16:15There you go, Charles. Looking good.
00:16:20Someone's here?
00:16:22Oh, hi.
00:16:24Hi.
00:16:25You're early.
00:16:26I am?
00:16:28Well, actually, you said you were coming today, but I don't think we pinpointed a time, so...
00:16:33Oh. Sorry.
00:16:35It's fine. I'm glad you're here.
00:16:37That's James over there.
00:16:39Nice to meet you. I'm Caleb.
00:16:41Hi.
00:16:42Welcome.
00:16:44So what can I do?
00:16:45Come on back. I'll show you around.
00:16:48Here's the holding area.
00:16:50We have another one down the hall.
00:16:52We aim to get the animals out of their pens as much as we can.
00:16:55Are you comfortable handling dogs, cats, rabbits?
00:16:58All of the above. At least I'm willing to try.
00:17:01Great.
00:17:02It is not all playing with animals, though, so prepare yourself.
00:17:05Sure. The less glamorous stuff you warned me about.
00:17:08I'm ready.
00:17:09Okay.
00:17:10The dog and cat food is over here.
00:17:13The cat food is over here.
00:17:15Oh, but if you ever notice we're running low on something, please speak up.
00:17:18That happens quicker than I realize.
00:17:22This is a kind of enrichment area so the animals can play, get wiggles out, and so forth.
00:17:27Nice.
00:17:28We have supplies in the cabinet to clean and whatnot, as well as some dog treats and toys.
00:17:32I can give you the normal chores we ask for help with, but is there anything you were thinking of doing specifically?
00:17:37Whatever you need.
00:17:39Any particular skills you have?
00:17:41Should I have brought a resume?
00:17:43No, I just don't know a lot about you.
00:17:46What do you like to do? Or why do you want to volunteer?
00:17:49Well, after I was discharged from the Army, I worked in marketing at one company.
00:17:55Lately, I've been doing handyman-type stuff, mostly just helping a friend more so than work, but stuff like that.
00:18:00Cool.
00:18:01And, well, I wanted to volunteer because, well, this stuck with me last year when you and Leo came to visit.
00:18:07I'm glad it did.
00:18:10Where is Leo, by the way?
00:18:11At home. I don't bring him every day. He likes some quiet time.
00:18:15So, you mind mopping?
00:18:22Hi. How you doing?
00:18:26Good. Glad to hear it.
00:18:31Hello?
00:18:34Hey, bud.
00:18:36Rex. Suits you.
00:18:39Later, Rex.
00:18:42Sure. You can come meet the animals between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
00:18:46We prefer if you call ahead so we can be ready, but we also understand if that doesn't work for everyone.
00:18:52Yes, we have our Christmas adoption drive on December 23rd. You can adopt any time, though.
00:18:58Yeah, sure. Please do.
00:19:00Thank you. Bye.
00:19:03Bye.
00:19:09Sorry. I know that's not exciting, but...
00:19:12If it helps, that's all that matters.
00:19:18Hey, you said you work with sales or something before?
00:19:21Yeah, marketing.
00:19:23Well, I've been working on this flyer to put out for the Christmas adoption drive.
00:19:26I'm trying to come up with a slogan or tagline. Something catchy.
00:19:31So far, I have...
00:19:33Bring home a new member of the family. On the big posters.
00:19:36And I like that, but I kind of want something shorter.
00:19:39Like...
00:19:43Nothing.
00:19:45Hmm. How about...
00:19:47A play on forever, but with the word fur.
00:19:50Like, well, try not to laugh, but...
00:19:53A cute photo of a dog with forever yours at Christmas written under it.
00:19:58Told you it was bad.
00:20:00No, no, no. I love it. What else?
00:20:03All right.
00:20:05Maybe...
00:20:07Give the gift that loves you back.
00:20:10No, that's too long.
00:20:13Ooh. This Christmas. Love and be loved.
00:20:17That's shorter. Not bad.
00:20:21Hey.
00:20:23Maybe you could share stories about how people's lives have changed after they adopt.
00:20:27The flyer?
00:20:29Probably not. It's too long, but...
00:20:32I don't know. Success stories might make people smile and want that for themselves.
00:20:36Like you and Leo.
00:20:38And what you told me about when you adopted him.
00:20:41You remember that?
00:20:43Yeah, mostly.
00:20:45When people come here, I like to share the animal story.
00:20:48It helps people think about how a pet could fit into their lives.
00:20:51Now we just need to get people here.
00:20:53We're pretty much at capacity with the number of animals we're sheltering, and...
00:20:57That is never good.
00:20:59A lot of furry ones to take care of, huh?
00:21:01Yeah, it can be challenging.
00:21:03Especially trying to find the right home for each animal.
00:21:05And the costs are...
00:21:07Don't people have to pay something for whatever they adopt?
00:21:10Yeah, but it rarely covers the expense to shelter them.
00:21:13Really?
00:21:15So thank you. For being here.
00:21:25Hello!
00:21:27Hi, honey.
00:21:28How was your day?
00:21:30Fine, Dad. Thanks.
00:21:31Hey, Becca.
00:21:33Where's the straw for the manger?
00:21:35Got it.
00:21:36Here.
00:21:37Be careful not to make a mess.
00:21:39I'll try.
00:21:40So, Heidi, how's the diner doing?
00:21:42It's good.
00:21:43Huge group coming for lunch. Kept me busy past the usual rush.
00:21:46That's good.
00:21:47So how are things at the shelter?
00:21:49Good. Easier today.
00:21:50I have a new volunteer, and he did a lot of cleaning.
00:21:53So I can focus on other stuff.
00:21:54What's his name?
00:21:55Caleb.
00:21:56You know, it is so nice when the youth get involved in the community.
00:21:59Oh, he's not that young.
00:22:01He's not a student?
00:22:02That's James. Caleb is a veteran.
00:22:04But he's not that old, though.
00:22:06Wait, what?
00:22:07He was injured somehow and was discharged.
00:22:10So he's like your age?
00:22:11Yeah.
00:22:12Is he handsome?
00:22:13Mom!
00:22:14If she didn't ask, I was going to say the same thing.
00:22:16Me too.
00:22:17You went out of your way to not describe him like you were avoiding key words.
00:22:21Yeah. Key words like my age and suitable date.
00:22:24Exactly.
00:22:25Shush, all of you.
00:22:27He's nice, but I don't know a lot about him yet.
00:22:36Okay. Come on, Bella.
00:22:38Come on.
00:22:43Hey.
00:22:44Hey.
00:22:45Okay, Bella. Let's show Caleb what we can do.
00:22:48Ready?
00:22:50Good girl.
00:22:51Nice.
00:22:52Yeah, she's pretty good with other dogs, so I'm going to grab Thor and let them play a bit.
00:22:56Can you watch her?
00:22:57Sure.
00:22:59Come here, Bella.
00:23:01Hey.
00:23:02Hey, you did so good on the course.
00:23:04Want to run it again?
00:23:05No.
00:23:08You're a heartbreaker, aren't you?
00:23:10You're good with dogs.
00:23:12Oh, thanks.
00:23:14Yeah, it wasn't my job to train them in the army or anything, but I like spending time with them.
00:23:18I'd help run them through the training course whenever I could.
00:23:21Kind of a bright spot in my day.
00:23:23They have that effect.
00:23:25Yeah.
00:23:26Oh, sorry. I'll get back to cleaning the bowls. James just asked me to watch her for a moment.
00:23:30Oh, you're fine. I don't think you're slacking, if that's what you're worried about.
00:23:34Oh, good.
00:23:36Good.
00:23:38Would you want to help with exercising the dogs on the course here?
00:23:42Yeah, sure. I'd like that.
00:23:48Oh.
00:23:49Something wrong?
00:23:51I didn't realize what time it was.
00:23:53I have a doctor's appointment, just a follow-up for my leg.
00:23:57Sorry, now I feel like I'm slacking.
00:24:00Not at all.
00:24:01I did manage to clean all the windows, I disinfected the pens for the cats, and I cleaned the rabbit cages.
00:24:08You got a lot done. Thank you.
00:24:10No problem. I'll see you tomorrow.
00:24:12Thanks for coming.
00:24:13Bye, Bella.
00:24:15Come on.
00:24:20Okay, good night, everyone.
00:24:22Good night, good night.
00:24:32Did we already go through it all?
00:24:44Already?
00:24:49I thought it would last longer.
00:25:01Phew.
00:25:32Good night.
00:25:52You holding on the four-heel wheel?
00:25:55Wow. Good job.
00:25:59Come on, Tank. Let's stretch our legs, okay?
00:26:02Hi.
00:26:03Hey, Kayla.
00:26:04Did you want me to watch things up front, or is Leo in charge?
00:26:07It's usually slow right now. Leo will let me know if someone comes.
00:26:10Wow. He's well-trained.
00:26:12This is Tank.
00:26:15Really? Did you make that up?
00:26:18Maybe.
00:26:19I like the irony.
00:26:21Hi, Tank. Yeah, you're so tough.
00:26:25Hi, Rex.
00:26:27I was actually going to get him out, too. Give me a hand?
00:26:29Sure.
00:26:32Okay, Rex. You ready to come out?
00:26:36Stay.
00:26:39Okay.
00:26:40Hey, bud.
00:26:42He likes you.
00:26:43He does?
00:26:44Come on.
00:26:46All right. Come on, Rex. Follow me.
00:26:51That wasn't it.
00:26:53Come on.
00:26:56Do you need a treat to bribe him?
00:26:58Maybe.
00:27:02All right. Come back here, Rex.
00:27:04All right. Good. Stay. Sit.
00:27:06All right. Ready? And do what I do.
00:27:12There you go.
00:27:14Is Rex his real name?
00:27:16He arrived with it, so I assume so.
00:27:18Well, a dog trainer, I am not.
00:27:20He responds to you.
00:27:21Did you see what just happened?
00:27:23Okay, maybe he doesn't obey you, but he's intrigued by you.
00:27:26I'm not sure it's mutual.
00:27:28He just loves to be active.
00:27:30He's been here longer than any of the others, so this is a really nice outlet for him.
00:27:34I try to take him home as much as I can, but Leo doesn't like it.
00:27:38Territorial?
00:27:39Well, Rex hoards all the dog toys, so it annoys Leo.
00:27:43That sounds like Rex.
00:27:45Would you want to take him home for a night?
00:27:49Me?
00:27:50You're good with him.
00:27:52Have you had your own dog before?
00:27:54When I was a kid, yeah.
00:27:56So you know what to do.
00:27:58Well...
00:28:00You don't have to if you don't want to, but think about it.
00:28:05James should be here soon. Are you hungry?
00:28:08Yeah.
00:28:09Let's get some lunch.
00:28:13This is my friend's place. I'll apologize in advance for anything she says.
00:28:17Okay.
00:28:18Amber!
00:28:19Hey!
00:28:20Welcome, I'm Heidi.
00:28:22Caleb.
00:28:23Oh, volunteer.
00:28:26We have to be quick, so...
00:28:28Sure, just look over the menu and let me know what you want.
00:28:33I'll give you guys a minute.
00:28:35I should have thought this through.
00:28:38Is everything okay?
00:28:39Yeah, the sandwiches are great here. Get whatever you like, my treat.
00:28:43Oh no, you don't have to do that, I can...
00:28:44You're working for free? The least I can do is buy lunch.
00:28:47Well, thank you then.
00:28:50So, how'd you come to own the shelter?
00:28:53I started out like you, volunteering.
00:28:56Wanted to have something to do as a teen after school.
00:28:59The founder of the shelter was a neighbor of mine, Kathy.
00:29:02She was always kind, and she had the biggest heart, you know.
00:29:06She never minded that I came by, and pretty soon she asked me to work there for real.
00:29:12So you've been working there since high school?
00:29:14No, I was away for a few years for college, but I came back one summer,
00:29:18and by then Kathy's health wasn't so good, and the shelter needed a lot of attention.
00:29:23She didn't want to see it close, and she always said that she felt like it was what God wanted her to do.
00:29:29But since she couldn't do it all, maybe I was meant to take over.
00:29:33She asked me to run it.
00:29:35That's a lot of pressure.
00:29:36Yeah, I felt like that sometimes.
00:29:39She passed away a couple years ago, and left it to me to keep it going.
00:29:43And I haven't looked back.
00:29:46So you never wanted to do something else?
00:29:49I studied art for a bit.
00:29:52Oh, that's right. You like to paint.
00:29:55I told you that?
00:29:57Last year.
00:29:58You and your memory.
00:30:00But yes, I do like painting and pottery and things like that.
00:30:03But I felt like this was more important.
00:30:06You know, it's not like I planned it or thought it would become such a big part of my life.
00:30:10But then I started to see what Kathy meant.
00:30:13Sometimes God leads you to where you need to be, even if it's not where you expected to end up.
00:30:18Well, I suppose you're lucky.
00:30:21It's not easy to know what to do with your life.
00:30:23Is that why you joined the Army?
00:30:25At first, maybe.
00:30:27I wasn't so sure it seemed like a good solution, but then I really took to it.
00:30:32Can I ask what happened?
00:30:34Training accident.
00:30:36I got rolled in a vehicle that turned too hard during a training exercise.
00:30:40Wow.
00:30:41Yeah. Of all things, right?
00:30:44Nine years, and that's what takes me out of it.
00:30:46I'm sorry.
00:30:48Like I said, it was an accident. Back to square one.
00:30:52Starting over.
00:30:54It's a process.
00:30:55Well, I'm glad I brought you to the shelter.
00:30:57Me too. It's been nice.
00:31:00Sometimes loud, but nice.
00:31:03Yes, that is just one of the stresses.
00:31:06What are the others?
00:31:08Worrying about the animals.
00:31:10If I can find enough homes for them.
00:31:12Having enough resources to take in every animal and keep them sheltered and happy.
00:31:18Some days I worry about not having enough food for them.
00:31:22That's a lot on your shoulders.
00:31:24Some days are easier than others.
00:31:28I don't think my parents saw the shelter as a career at first.
00:31:31At least not the one that they imagined for me.
00:31:34But they see how much I love the animals and they understand why I need to do it.
00:31:39They always support me now.
00:31:41That's nice, having their support.
00:31:44How about you? Tell me about your family.
00:31:48My parents, they live in Kansas.
00:31:52Any siblings?
00:31:54Nope.
00:31:56Are you going there for Christmas then?
00:31:58No, I'll stay here.
00:32:01Are your parents coming to visit you?
00:32:04No.
00:32:05Oh.
00:32:07That must be hard. I can't imagine Christmas without my family around.
00:32:10You'll get used to it.
00:32:13Because of being in the army?
00:32:16I don't know.
00:32:17It'd make me want to see them even more when I could.
00:32:20We're not that close, are we?
00:32:24Oh. Sorry.
00:32:27So yeah, if you need any help over the holidays, it won't interrupt anything.
00:32:31I couldn't ask that of you.
00:32:33I'm offering.
00:32:34Well, thanks. I'll remember that.
00:32:41How was the shelter today?
00:32:43Good.
00:32:45There are a lot of dogs there, you know.
00:32:47Something for you?
00:32:48Uh, no. No, no.
00:32:50Fine, fine.
00:32:52You're really liking it there, aren't you?
00:32:54So far, yeah. It's different.
00:32:57More fur?
00:32:59Yeah, there's that too.
00:33:02But no, there's good people.
00:33:04It's a nice change.
00:33:05I'm glad.
00:33:07Since you've been volunteering, you've been different.
00:33:10More energetic.
00:33:12You think so?
00:33:13Yeah.
00:33:14I'm glad you've found something that you're passionate about.
00:33:18I don't know if the shelter's necessarily a passion, but
00:33:21honestly, it is nice to keep me busy.
00:33:24It's more than keeping you busy.
00:33:26You have to be satisfied too.
00:33:29You remember Jessica Andre?
00:33:31Yeah, of course. From Lieutenant Squire's platoon.
00:33:34Yeah, she's back. Rotated out.
00:33:37I hear she's not doing very well.
00:33:39Oh.
00:33:40Yeah.
00:33:41She hasn't found her footing.
00:33:43Purpose.
00:33:44You know it's important.
00:33:46Maybe you, with this shelter thing,
00:33:48maybe you've found your purpose.
00:33:50If so, I'm thrilled.
00:33:52We'll see.
00:33:53It's easy for me.
00:33:55I don't have all the responsibility like Amber does.
00:34:00Hey, you remember Mac?
00:34:01Who trained dogs in the military?
00:34:03Yeah.
00:34:04Do you know how to get a hold of him?
00:34:06I think I have his number in here.
00:34:08Why?
00:34:09You gonna get him to adopt some dogs too?
00:34:11No, I'm wondering if he has any idea on how to get dog food at a better price.
00:34:15Or donated.
00:34:17Dog food?
00:34:18Sounds like things are tight at the shelter.
00:34:20Here it is.
00:34:22Sending it to you now.
00:34:24Thanks.
00:34:25You're really getting into this, aren't you?
00:34:28Just trying to help.
00:34:29Here.
00:34:35Hey, Mac.
00:34:36It's Caleb Hale.
00:34:41Come on, Leo. Let's get ready to go.
00:34:49Hi.
00:34:51Hi.
00:34:53Is Rex still needing a break?
00:34:56Yeah.
00:34:59Whoa.
00:35:00Okay.
00:35:05Wait, no. Don't go up there.
00:35:11What was I thinking?
00:35:13Come on, Rex. Back to the kitchen.
00:35:18There you go.
00:35:20Stay there, alright?
00:35:23Good night.
00:35:35I was surprised you took him to lunch.
00:35:37I was being nice.
00:35:39Do you have a picture?
00:35:40No, why would I?
00:35:41I do.
00:35:43I took one when they weren't looking.
00:35:45Heidi!
00:35:46Nice, right?
00:35:48Back to work.
00:35:49I need to start getting these flyers out to businesses and stores.
00:35:53Becca, you're not even helping.
00:35:55Right.
00:35:57I thought he was nice.
00:35:59You said three sentences to him, if that.
00:36:01Only because you chased me away.
00:36:04I want to meet him.
00:36:05No.
00:36:06Why not?
00:36:07Just go to the shelter and meet him.
00:36:08Good idea.
00:36:09No, no, no.
00:36:10You go there to pick out a pet, not a guy.
00:36:13It was nice of him to take Rex home.
00:36:15Yeah.
00:36:16I wonder how he's doing with that.
00:36:18He sounds lonely.
00:36:19Well, Rex has been at the shelter for...
00:36:21I mean, Caleb.
00:36:22Oh.
00:36:23You should invite him over for Christmas.
00:36:25No.
00:36:26At least for dinner.
00:36:27No.
00:36:29I'll tell Mom.
00:36:30She'd say it's the Christian thing to do.
00:36:31Yeah.
00:36:32No one should be alone on Christmas.
00:36:34You don't think that sends the wrong message or seems inappropriate?
00:36:37Funny you should say that.
00:36:38Unless you're worried because you do find him interesting and attractive.
00:36:42Excellent point.
00:36:45That's it.
00:36:46No hot chocolate for you.
00:36:47Oh, no.
00:37:04Rex.
00:37:05What are you doing up here?
00:37:12I have a reporter friend.
00:37:13She said she'll write up something for their website about the adoption drive.
00:37:17That'd be great.
00:37:18I also have these flyers and I've been taking them to businesses and stores.
00:37:21Do you know anyone I could take some to?
00:37:24Yeah.
00:37:25Let me take some.
00:37:26Thanks.
00:37:27And just let me know if your reporter friend needs any information.
00:37:29I am happy to talk with her.
00:37:31Great.
00:37:32One of my clients is a therapist.
00:37:34She was asking about maybe partnering somehow so her clients can interact with the animals.
00:37:40Could I take you to meet her?
00:37:41Maybe a lunch date?
00:37:43Yeah.
00:37:44I'd love to meet her.
00:37:45I'll set it up.
00:37:46Maybe after Christmas.
00:37:48Sure.
00:37:49See you later.
00:37:51Thanks again.
00:37:54How was Rex?
00:37:55Did he behave?
00:37:56I took him for a walk last night.
00:37:58We went a few miles but he could have gone a few more.
00:38:00Then my legs started acting up.
00:38:03Thank you for giving him a break.
00:38:05Yeah.
00:38:07You want to take him tonight too?
00:38:09No, it's okay.
00:38:11Do you have any more flyers though?
00:38:13I can see about handing some out later when I head out for errands.
00:38:16That'd be great.
00:38:18Oh, we are out of dog food, cat food and pellets for the rabbits and guinea pigs.
00:38:23Would you mind going with James to stock up?
00:38:25It gets to be a lot of heavy lifting.
00:38:27Yeah, sure.
00:38:29Will that hurt your leg?
00:38:30No, no.
00:38:31It'll be fine.
00:38:32Okay.
00:38:33Hey, James.
00:38:36The stuff we get should be just over here.
00:38:38How many bags do we need?
00:38:39Eight for the adult kibble, two for the puppy and one bag of senior kibble.
00:38:43We'll get this and then we'll get the cat food.
00:38:45Got it.
00:38:46So, do you know who came by earlier?
00:38:49The guy talking with Amber?
00:38:51That was Ryan.
00:38:52He's a donor.
00:38:53Helps keep us afloat.
00:38:55I know Amber really appreciates him.
00:38:58Oh.
00:38:59I'm pretty sure he likes her too, but she's kind of oblivious about that.
00:39:05Yeah, I got that vibe from him.
00:39:08She doesn't know?
00:39:10I don't think he's said anything directly.
00:39:13Do you think she'd be interested?
00:39:16I don't know.
00:39:17Why?
00:39:18Just wondering.
00:39:21Right.
00:39:34Hey, Rex.
00:39:36How's it going, bud?
00:39:38Hey.
00:39:39Doing alright?
00:39:41Yeah, I gotta get back to work, but I'll take you through the obstacle course later, okay?
00:39:46Alright?
00:39:47It's a date.
00:39:48Yeah.
00:39:57Hey, James.
00:39:58I forgot to ask you to get more chew toys for the dogs.
00:40:01Oh.
00:40:02I...
00:40:03I could go back.
00:40:06No, it's okay.
00:40:07Thanks.
00:40:08Hey, for visiting the Veterans Clinic tomorrow, I was thinking I might take Caleb.
00:40:13Makes sense.
00:40:14So you okay with that?
00:40:15Yeah.
00:40:16I mean, I can look after things here.
00:40:19I think it'd be good for him.
00:40:21That's...
00:40:22very thoughtful.
00:40:23You think so?
00:40:24Sure.
00:40:25I think he'll appreciate it too.
00:40:27Okay.
00:40:28Good.
00:40:30Not that it matters.
00:40:31He's fine with whatever tasks, right?
00:40:32Yeah.
00:40:33Good.
00:40:36Woof!
00:40:37Woof!
00:40:41You know what to do?
00:40:42What Pixie did to the talking?
00:40:44You'll see she has more effect than anything you say.
00:40:46I don't know about that.
00:40:48You made a difference to me.
00:40:50I did?
00:40:52Yeah.
00:40:53Woof!
00:40:54Alright, alright.
00:40:55I'm coming.
00:40:56This is Leo.
00:40:57Is he a poodle?
00:40:59He is a poodle.
00:41:00Full-bred poodle.
00:41:01Woof!
00:41:02Woof!
00:41:03Woof!
00:41:04Woof!
00:41:05Woof!
00:41:06Woof!
00:41:07Woof!
00:41:08Woof!
00:41:09Woof!
00:41:10Woof!
00:41:11Woof!
00:41:12Woof!
00:41:13Woof!
00:41:14Woof!
00:41:15Woof!
00:41:16Woof!
00:41:17Woof!
00:41:18Woof!
00:41:19Woof!
00:41:20Woof!
00:41:21Woof!
00:41:22Woof!
00:41:23Woof!
00:41:24Woof!
00:41:25Woof!
00:41:26Woof!
00:41:27Woof!
00:41:28Woof!
00:41:29Woof!
00:41:30Woof!
00:41:31Woof!
00:41:32Woof!
00:41:33Woof!
00:41:34Woof!
00:41:35Woof!
00:41:36Woof!
00:41:37Hey.
00:41:39For what?
00:41:40For letting me come along.
00:41:55How many times am I going to need to remind you that I am the Great For One, Mr. Volunteer,
00:41:59Well, still, that was special.
00:42:02It's a different perspective, not being the injured one.
00:42:05It looked like you were able to connect with him in a way that I can't,
00:42:08given your military service.
00:42:10Maybe, but that doesn't mean you coming is any less powerful.
00:42:16You do that every Christmas?
00:42:18I try to go every month or two, but Christmas is especially important.
00:42:22Wow, that's really impressive.
00:42:24It's good, having more human interaction.
00:42:27For the dogs?
00:42:29I meant for me, but it's good for them too.
00:42:35Can I ask you something?
00:42:37Of course.
00:42:38Is your military service an issue with your family?
00:42:42I'm sorry, that is none of my business.
00:42:45No, it's okay, I just, I'm not that great at talking about it.
00:42:49But no, they didn't mind.
00:42:51They just worried.
00:42:53Who wouldn't worry in their shoes?
00:42:55Yeah, but they were supportive, so.
00:42:58Oh.
00:43:00You're wondering what happened.
00:43:02I'm sorry, I'm being nosy.
00:43:04It's okay.
00:43:08After the accident, I was, well, let's just say I wasn't that easy to be around.
00:43:14I was afraid I wasn't going to recover, and I didn't know what I was going to do next.
00:43:20My parents, they kept trying to make everything better.
00:43:24Like this relentless optimism.
00:43:26Always saying things like, you know, it's all part of God's plan.
00:43:30There's better things ahead.
00:43:33You just have to have faith.
00:43:36You know, I was raised to believe in God,
00:43:39but it got harder and harder to keep hearing them say it over and over.
00:43:44How could something so terrible be part of His plan, you know?
00:43:49Anyway, we had an argument.
00:43:52A big one.
00:43:54And I'll admit it was more my fault than them.
00:43:57But...
00:44:01But I pushed them away.
00:44:04And there you have it.
00:44:07I'm sorry.
00:44:09You know, I haven't told anyone that except for you, I.
00:44:13Pastor Eli?
00:44:15Yeah, we served together.
00:44:17Not in the same capacity, of course, but...
00:44:20he was the army chaplain, and we stayed friends.
00:44:24I didn't realize that.
00:44:30Thank you for telling me.
00:44:35Yeah.
00:44:40Come in.
00:44:43Hey.
00:44:44Hi.
00:44:45What's up?
00:44:46As soon as I could.
00:44:48Those look yummy.
00:44:49Help yourself.
00:44:52I'm trying to figure out how to cut costs at the shelter.
00:44:55I thought you already cut what you could.
00:44:57Well, not enough.
00:44:59It sounds like you need to bring more money in.
00:45:01Can you raise prices to adopt?
00:45:04No, because it has the opposite effect.
00:45:06Less people adopt, and then I have more animals to care for.
00:45:08Yeah, makes sense.
00:45:09I even got an unexpected donation, but utilities, dog food, rent, it's already gone.
00:45:15I'm using my own money to float the shelter.
00:45:17I can't keep this up.
00:45:20So, any ideas?
00:45:22At your basketball games, there are always banners from sponsors.
00:45:26How does that work?
00:45:28They pay to have their logo and information shown as sponsors for the event or school team,
00:45:34but we usually have banks and orthodontists sponsoring.
00:45:37I'm not sure it'll fit for the shelter.
00:45:40I was thinking vets.
00:45:42That's a good idea.
00:45:44Every pet you find a home for is a potential new patient for a veterinarian.
00:45:48Exactly what I was thinking.
00:45:50But what do I do?
00:45:52Call up and say, hey, can I print your name in exchange for money?
00:45:55I think you'll need to sell it a little more than that.
00:45:57Think about how you got other donations for the shelter.
00:46:00Most came from when Kathy ran it, and a lot of those have already tapered off over time.
00:46:04What about that Ryan guy?
00:46:06He's the one who gave a little extra recently.
00:46:09I can't ask for more.
00:46:11Well, I'll write some talking points for a sponsor then.
00:46:13And I'll start compiling a list of vet offices to call.
00:46:16Okay.
00:46:22Mac. Hey, any luck?
00:46:26Really?
00:46:28Oh, thank you so much, man.
00:46:31Yeah, yeah, hold on.
00:46:37Okay, go ahead.
00:46:40Yeah, perfect.
00:46:42Yeah, I'll reach out to them about how to pick it up.
00:46:45Hey, thank you again. This means so much.
00:46:48I mean it.
00:46:50Okay.
00:46:52Yeah, take care.
00:46:54Hey, Merry Christmas.
00:46:56All right.
00:47:02Okay, thank you. Bye.
00:47:06Hey.
00:47:07Caleb, I thought you weren't coming in today.
00:47:09Yeah, I wasn't, but I have some news.
00:47:11So, I reached out to an old army buddy of mine who used to train dogs in the military,
00:47:15and long story short, I told him about the shelter,
00:47:18and asked if he had suggestions about getting dog food at a better price.
00:47:21You did all that?
00:47:23Yeah, and well, he called and passed along what we need, and well, guess what?
00:47:26This one company is willing to pledge a year's donation of food for all of our cats and dogs.
00:47:30Are you serious?
00:47:32Caleb, that's...
00:47:36Yeah, it wasn't me. It was Mac and his company.
00:47:38I can't believe you did all this.
00:47:40Seriously, you went after it, though.
00:47:42Well, you have enough to worry about.
00:47:44Not nearly as much now.
00:47:49Really, thank you.
00:47:52Yeah, of course.
00:47:56So, what are you working on?
00:47:58I'm trying to find a veterinarian to sponsor the adoption drive.
00:48:02Nothing yet, but I'm not even halfway through the list.
00:48:05Do you need any help?
00:48:07I might be done with these calls before tomorrow, but if not, that'd be great.
00:48:12Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow.
00:48:14Thank you, again.
00:48:17I love you.
00:48:35Sounds great. We'll see you tomorrow. Bye-bye.
00:48:39Hi. Can I help you?
00:48:41Yeah, I have kind of an unusual question.
00:48:47Come on.
00:48:49There you go. It takes some time to get to know him.
00:49:01Hello? Davenport Animal Haven.
00:49:03Hi, I'm calling for Amber.
00:49:05This is she.
00:49:06I'm with Firstline Animal Hospital, and we have six hospitals throughout the county.
00:49:10I just wanted to find out more about sponsoring your Christmas adoption drive.
00:49:14Oh, great.
00:49:16Wait, how did you hear about being a sponsor?
00:49:18A man came by. Let's see, what was his name? I wrote it down somewhere.
00:49:23Oh, here it is. Caleb Hale.
00:49:26Great. Any questions I can answer about the sponsorship?
00:49:34Hi.
00:49:35Hi. Looking for something?
00:49:37Him.
00:49:40Hey, what's going on?
00:49:42The Animal Hospital?
00:49:44Did they call?
00:49:45Yes!
00:49:46Oh, good. I wasn't sure if I was doubling up.
00:49:48You might have called already, but I was driving by and thought, why not?
00:49:51They signed on to sponsor the Christmas adoption drive.
00:49:54That's great!
00:49:55You have no idea.
00:49:57Look, are you doing anything tonight?
00:50:01No. Why?
00:50:03My mom always has a Christmas pie night in December. I want you to come.
00:50:07We'll make it a celebration.
00:50:09Okay. Yeah, sure. Sounds fun.
00:50:12I hope this crust turned out alright.
00:50:14I can tell you right now if it did.
00:50:16Oh, no, you don't.
00:50:17Ooh.
00:50:19Hello!
00:50:20Hi, everyone.
00:50:22Oh, hi. I'm Becca.
00:50:24Evan. Nice to meet you.
00:50:26Hi, Heidi.
00:50:27Good to see you again.
00:50:28And this is Caleb. Caleb, this is my mom and my dad.
00:50:32Pleasure.
00:50:33Oh, I'm so glad that you could join us.
00:50:35Amber told us all about those miracles that you worked for the shelter,
00:50:38so you get the first slice.
00:50:40Now, on Christmas pie night, we do have a little bit of everything,
00:50:43but we like to start with a proper dinner, so we have shepherd's pie first.
00:50:47Sounds delicious.
00:50:49Okay, well, Margaret, why don't you say the blessing on the food?
00:50:53Happy to.
00:50:54Our gracious Father in Heaven,
00:50:57we are grateful for this fine meal and the traditions that bring us together
00:51:02to celebrate your son's birth at this special time of year.
00:51:05We are so pleased that Caleb could join us.
00:51:08Help him to feel at home here with us.
00:51:11Please bless this food as we know that it is from your hand,
00:51:15and we are thankful for all of the blessings that you give us.
00:51:17In Jesus' name, amen.
00:51:19Amen.
00:51:20Well, dig in, everybody.
00:51:22There's plenty more, but save some room for the dessert pies.
00:51:25Thanks, Mom.
00:51:27So, Caleb, when you're not single-handedly saving the day at the shelter,
00:51:31what do you do?
00:51:32I think Amber gives me too much credit.
00:51:34I help out an old army buddy at the church.
00:51:37Oh, how long do you serve for?
00:51:39Nine years, sir.
00:51:40Call me David.
00:51:41Amber mentioned that you had been injured.
00:51:43How are you feeling now?
00:51:44Mom?
00:51:45Pretty much good as new.
00:51:46Good.
00:51:47Your poor parents must have been beside themselves.
00:51:50This is good pie, Mom.
00:51:51Thanks, Eddie.
00:51:52So, tell us about yourself.
00:51:54Amber only tells me so much.
00:51:55Oh, we should do that 20 questions thing.
00:51:58You know, like what you guys do when I bring home a date to meet the family?
00:52:02Great idea.
00:52:03What do you think?
00:52:04Sure, why not?
00:52:06Brace yourself, Caleb.
00:52:07He's our guest.
00:52:08Maybe let's...
00:52:09What's your favorite meal?
00:52:10Steak, I guess.
00:52:12First car?
00:52:13An old Bronco.
00:52:14Do you have a girlfriend?
00:52:15No.
00:52:16What's your favorite pie?
00:52:18Pecan.
00:52:19Perfect, because I made some for later.
00:52:21What kind of books do you read?
00:52:24Thanks for helping me with these.
00:52:26I'm going to start selling them at the diner.
00:52:28I'd buy one.
00:52:29These are so cute.
00:52:30They make great neighbor gifts, too.
00:52:32Can I have one?
00:52:33Of course.
00:52:36Caleb, you want a hot chocolate pop?
00:52:38Sounds great, thanks.
00:52:39Come on over here.
00:52:43Alright, how's this work?
00:52:44Never had a hot chocolate pop before?
00:52:46Uh, no.
00:52:48Come on, you'll love it.
00:52:49Pick one.
00:52:52Like that?
00:52:53Yep.
00:52:54And we just add some milk.
00:53:01Hey, that's pretty neat.
00:53:03It tastes good, too.
00:53:13Oh, wow.
00:53:14That's good.
00:53:15I know, right?
00:53:17Hey, what if you sold these at the adoption drive?
00:53:19What do these have to do with pet adoptions?
00:53:21Oh, it fits more under Christmas, but I don't know, it could be an impulse buy.
00:53:24Something festive.
00:53:26I'm just thinking out loud.
00:53:28You don't have to do it.
00:53:29No, I like that idea.
00:53:30Yeah, I'd buy them.
00:53:32Can I pay you to make some for me to sell?
00:53:34Yeah, of course.
00:53:38Something wrong?
00:53:39No, I'm just thinking.
00:53:41Hot chocolate pops work for Christmas, but you could also sell collars and leashes.
00:53:45Aw, cute.
00:53:47Or you could invite in existing pet owners to decorate a collar for their dog.
00:53:51Or...
00:53:52Decorate a leash.
00:53:54Or even photos with Santa Claus.
00:53:56Santa Paws.
00:53:58Starting to sound less like an adoption drive, though.
00:54:01But that's good.
00:54:03Instead of just another adoption drive, it could be like...
00:54:06Like a Christmas pet fair.
00:54:08So I can tell my neighbors about it without them feeling like I'm pressuring them to adopt?
00:54:13Exactly.
00:54:14But just people being there will help spread the word and get people thinking.
00:54:18Sounds like we've got a lot of work to do.
00:54:22I need to update all the flyers and tell the reporter that Ryan arranged what we're doing.
00:54:27How did you get to be so creative?
00:54:29I don't think I've ever been called creative.
00:54:31Well, you are.
00:54:34Seriously.
00:54:35You don't know how huge all of this is.
00:54:37A few days ago, the shelter was broke.
00:54:39I was trying to figure out how to keep it all going and not give more than I could afford myself.
00:54:44I didn't know what to do.
00:54:46Especially if I had to turn away an animal in need.
00:54:49I'm glad it didn't come to that.
00:54:51But then you went above and beyond.
00:54:53Like, way beyond.
00:54:55And for the first time, I am eager to get to work without the fear that I'll fail.
00:55:00Knowing that I can focus on the animals with less pressure about the money side is...
00:55:06I could tell that you were worried and sad, and I didn't want that.
00:55:09Thanks for bringing me along tonight.
00:55:12It's been a while since I've been around a family.
00:55:16They like meeting you, too.
00:55:18I'm sorry for their non-stop questions.
00:55:36Okay.
00:55:45We are going to make this the best Christmas adoption drive yet.
00:55:48We're holding it here, right?
00:55:49Yes.
00:55:50And pray for good weather, because we're going to have to do crafts and things outside.
00:55:53But I think it'll work.
00:55:55Now, Heidi is making the hot chocolate pops.
00:55:58I think we put her in charge of selling that over here.
00:56:04And then we'll have somebody run decorating the collars and leashes.
00:56:08You want me on that?
00:56:10I'll get my family to help out.
00:56:11I'd rather the three of us handle the adoptions, though.
00:56:14We can do that.
00:56:15However, I do like the Santa photo idea, especially for people who just adopted a pet.
00:56:20I'm thinking we put up a backdrop for that about here.
00:56:26Sound good?
00:56:27Yeah.
00:56:28Okay.
00:56:29Now, this is a lot to handle on top of everything we do each day.
00:56:32I can focus on it if you want.
00:56:34It's too much, man.
00:56:36I think I can figure most of it out.
00:56:38You two were handling all the normal things before I came anyways.
00:56:41Okay.
00:56:42I'll go ahead and adjust the new flyers, but do pass along anything that's too big.
00:56:46All right.
00:56:47And is there a volume discount at all?
00:56:50Uh-huh.
00:56:54Okay.
00:56:55And all that's in stock right now.
00:56:58Cool.
00:57:01Yeah, okay.
00:57:02Well, thank you very much.
00:57:05Yeah, goodbye.
00:57:07Sorry.
00:57:08It's fine.
00:57:09How you doing there, Rexy?
00:57:10Still eating all your kibble?
00:57:11Yeah, he's doing all right.
00:57:13Hey, what's his story?
00:57:16You said every animal has one.
00:57:18Yeah.
00:57:20He's someone I don't know much about.
00:57:22When I first brought him here, I was expecting someone might show up to claim him because he's so sweet.
00:57:27And he gets along with other dogs well.
00:57:30Now I just keep waiting for someone to adopt him.
00:57:33I'm not sure why no one has.
00:57:35One day, someone will see him for who he is.
00:57:38I wish everyone could see animals the way you do.
00:57:42What if they could?
00:57:45I could type up all the animals' stories for the adoption drive.
00:57:48And maybe display it next to their kennels.
00:57:50Yeah.
00:57:51That way if I can't tell them myself, they can still learn about the animal they're looking at.
00:57:55Yeah, I like it.
00:57:58It's nice brainstorming with you.
00:58:01I just hope it helps enough.
00:58:04I want this to go really well.
00:58:06For you.
00:58:08Thanks.
00:58:10Hey, would you want to do something tonight?
00:58:15After the shelter closes?
00:58:17Yeah, I'd like that.
00:58:23What's this?
00:58:24You like painting and pottery.
00:58:26I thought this kind of combined both of those.
00:58:29Are you serious?
00:58:31I know the shelter is so important to you, but I thought you kind of might need a break.
00:58:36You want to reminisce.
00:58:38This is so great.
00:58:40It's been a long time since I've done anything artistic.
00:58:43Well then, shall we get started?
00:58:46Mm-hmm.
00:58:48If I paint mine camouflage, will you judge me?
00:58:51Not at all.
00:58:53So what are you painting?
00:58:54I'm thinking a dog in a Santa hat.
00:58:56Napping by a Christmas tree.
00:58:58I will save that for canvas.
00:59:01Well, either way, I think you'll put me to shame.
00:59:03Okay, do not put me on a pedestal yet.
00:59:05Who knows how the dog will turn out.
00:59:08So, if you hadn't gotten involved with the shelter, would you have pursued art?
00:59:13I don't know.
00:59:15It's kind of hard to imagine now.
00:59:17But do you regret not giving art more of a chance?
00:59:20I don't think so.
00:59:21I like the variety of things I do at the shelter.
00:59:23I'm fine with art being my hobby.
00:59:26What about you?
00:59:28If I hadn't joined the Army?
00:59:29Yeah.
00:59:30I don't know of anything specifically, but it's more so a feel of what I like to do.
00:59:35Which is?
00:59:36Being useful?
00:59:39I don't know, I say that, but there's a lot of ways you can be useful.
00:59:43Maybe it's the variety that helps.
00:59:45Did you have that in the Army?
00:59:47Yeah, a lot more than you'd think.
00:59:50Well, I guess you are trained for whatever could go wrong.
00:59:53To a degree, yes, but there's a lot of times that you just had to improvise.
00:59:57You know, find a solution.
00:59:59I think I like that too.
01:00:02That's why you're so amazing.
01:00:05What?
01:00:06All of your good ideas and problem solving.
01:00:08I'm willing to bet, though, you've always had that talent.
01:00:11Who knows?
01:00:14Well, I am just lucky that you stopped by the shelter and have put up with the noise and craziness.
01:00:20It's been exactly what I was missing.
01:00:22Seriously.
01:00:23And not just the work.
01:00:25It's the little smiles on all the dogs' faces, like Rex.
01:00:28The fun little personalities of all the cats.
01:00:31And James, and...
01:00:33Well, especially...
01:00:35You.
01:00:38Is that okay?
01:00:41Of course.
01:00:44Good.
01:00:48There's this focus he has.
01:00:50Like an intensity that is so impressive.
01:00:53Everything he does, he does a hundred and ten percent.
01:00:56That's rare.
01:00:58And it's sweet too.
01:00:59It makes me want him to have some joy from all this.
01:01:02What makes you think he doesn't?
01:01:03That he seems happy, except for...
01:01:06Well, he's alone.
01:01:08Alone or lonely?
01:01:10Both.
01:01:11He's going to be alone this Christmas.
01:01:13Well, you should invite him to spend it with us.
01:01:15That's what I was thinking.
01:01:17But?
01:01:18It'd help, but it wouldn't fix what needs fixing.
01:01:22He shared some things with me the other day, and...
01:01:24And you want to make it all better, just like those dogs and cats at the shelter.
01:01:29Yeah, but it's more than that.
01:01:31He deserves to be happy.
01:01:33Truly happy with nothing held back.
01:01:36But I know he can't get there without making some changes with his family.
01:01:39Well, why does it matter to you so much?
01:01:42Because...
01:01:44It hurts when I catch glimpses of him when he's sad.
01:01:47And you care for him.
01:01:50He'll find his way, one day at a time.
01:01:54Not if he does it alone.
01:01:56Well, who said that we were going to leave him alone?
01:02:03What is in these, anyway?
01:02:04Nothing.
01:02:05They're just to decorate for the adoption drive tomorrow.
01:02:07What?
01:02:08Well, here, I was so curious.
01:02:20Okay, ready?
01:02:21One, two, three.
01:02:39Come here.
01:02:40Come here.
01:02:41Come here.
01:02:47Let me know if you need any help.
01:02:49Hey, boy.
01:02:50You want to come home with me today?
01:02:52I have to admit, I'm pretty grumpy in the mornings, though.
01:02:54Okay.
01:02:58That's the nice thing about them, huh?
01:03:01What's that?
01:03:02Dogs.
01:03:03They'll accept you as you are.
01:03:05No holding your flaws against you.
01:03:08Yeah.
01:03:09If only we could all be that way, huh?
01:03:11Right?
01:03:14What about that guy over there?
01:03:16Yeah, so that's actually Rex.
01:03:18He has been at the shelter the longest.
01:03:20And we don't have a ton of information on him,
01:03:22but he is the sweetest dog.
01:03:25He loves to play fetch.
01:03:26He gets along with other dogs great.
01:03:28Yeah, I could see how people would really like that for the cats.
01:03:32Here, I'll be right back.
01:03:34Thanks.
01:03:38Ah, this is the biggest turnout I have seen at Christmas time.
01:03:43Amber has you to thank for this.
01:03:45No, we've all pitched in, but Amber, she does so much,
01:03:49and I just hope we find homes for a lot of animals.
01:03:52Yeah.
01:03:54So, what are you doing for Christmas?
01:03:56I'm just keeping it quiet this year, relaxing on my own.
01:03:59Oh, well, we would love for you to spend it with us.
01:04:01Oh, thank you.
01:04:02I don't want to intrude.
01:04:03It's a day for family.
01:04:04It's no intrusion at all.
01:04:06She's joining us for the day.
01:04:07James is coming for Christmas dinner.
01:04:09You could at least join us for that, couldn't you?
01:04:11Maybe.
01:04:14Speaking of family, where is yours?
01:04:16Won't they miss you?
01:04:18I don't think so.
01:04:19They're back in Kansas.
01:04:21Every parent wants to be with their child at Christmas,
01:04:23no matter how old or young.
01:04:25It's not that simple.
01:04:27Well, why ever not?
01:04:31Okay, come on.
01:04:33Out with it.
01:04:35We're not that close anymore,
01:04:38and it's...
01:04:40I just don't think that they want to forgive me.
01:04:43Caleb, trust me,
01:04:45if there's anything to forgive,
01:04:47they've already done it.
01:04:50You know, certainly Christmas is the perfect time
01:04:52for healing and forgiveness.
01:04:55It's what it's all about.
01:04:58Take whatever step you can,
01:05:00even a small one,
01:05:02and give them something, you know,
01:05:04a way to bridge the gap between you.
01:05:07That'll be the best Christmas present.
01:05:10Thanks, Margaret.
01:05:12Yeah.
01:05:13Well, either way, the invitation still stands.
01:05:16I appreciate that.
01:05:25Is this Rex who you were asking about?
01:05:27Like I said, he is great with children
01:05:29and a wonderful family dog.
01:05:31He's beautiful.
01:05:33Yeah, if you just want to head over to James over there,
01:05:35he'll help you start the paperwork.
01:05:37Of course.
01:05:39I'll come back and check on you in a few minutes
01:05:41and see how you're doing.
01:05:45Hey, guess what?
01:05:47What?
01:05:49That couple over there is thinking about adopting Rex.
01:05:51Oh.
01:05:53That's great.
01:05:55They have two kids at home.
01:05:57It'll win them over, I'm sure.
01:05:59Just not certain yet.
01:06:01They're also thinking about Ollie.
01:06:03Oh, Ollie's great, too.
01:06:05Do you want Rex to stay?
01:06:09No, no, he...
01:06:11he needs a good home.
01:06:13And he looks so happy.
01:06:15Aw, he's a sweetheart, too.
01:06:17No.
01:06:19He's smaller than Rex.
01:06:21Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
01:06:24But Rex is so friendly.
01:06:27And he's been here so long.
01:06:29Mm-hmm.
01:06:31How do we choose?
01:06:33Would you want to adopt both?
01:06:35They get along with each other.
01:06:37And other dogs.
01:06:39I don't know.
01:06:41This would be our first dog.
01:06:43I think we need to stick with one for now.
01:06:45No pressure, just a thought.
01:06:47Hi.
01:06:49Hi.
01:06:52I'll be right back.
01:06:59So, how's it going over there?
01:07:01They're still deciding.
01:07:03Although...
01:07:05What?
01:07:07I think Ollie's gonna be their choice.
01:07:09Oh.
01:07:11I really wanted Rex to have a homeless Christmas.
01:07:15Yeah, me too.
01:07:17He still could.
01:07:19He still could.
01:07:21Yeah, the drive isn't over yet.
01:07:25What?
01:07:27There's a connection between you two.
01:07:29I mean it.
01:07:31I'm not trying to get you to do something you don't want to,
01:07:33but I can see you love Rex.
01:07:35Amber, we all care about the animals here.
01:07:37Caring for their well-being
01:07:39isn't the same as worrying that he's not with you.
01:07:43Am I wrong?
01:07:49No.
01:07:53How are you gonna feel if they choose Rex?
01:08:01I'm gonna go check on them.
01:08:03Will you watch Rex for a second?
01:08:09How are we doing over here?
01:08:11Good.
01:08:13All right.
01:08:19What do you think, Rex?
01:08:21I'm afraid I'm not a perfect fit for you.
01:08:25It's just me,
01:08:27and I don't want to let you down, you know?
01:08:31She is right, though.
01:08:33If anyone else adopted you,
01:08:35I'd really miss you.
01:08:37You're my buddy.
01:08:41What do you think?
01:08:43You want to give this a shot?
01:08:45You and me?
01:08:47Yeah. Okay, let's do this.
01:08:57We're doing this.
01:08:59Here's some instructions on Ollie specifically,
01:09:01what and how much he's used to eating,
01:09:03and general things as well.
01:09:05Okay, so we're all set?
01:09:07Yes.
01:09:11Thank you so much. Bye, Ollie!
01:09:17So,
01:09:19ready to sign Rex's adoption papers?
01:09:21Yeah.
01:09:23I am.
01:09:25And...
01:09:27got it!
01:09:29Thank you. Bye-bye.
01:09:31Merry Christmas.
01:09:33Hey! Looks like a successful day.
01:09:35These are all the adopted animals today.
01:09:37The biggest pile ever!
01:09:39That's so good!
01:09:41Who would have thought this would all come together?
01:09:43Not me, if I'm being honest. Congratulations.
01:09:47And really, we couldn't have done it without your help either.
01:09:49Glad I could help.
01:09:51Do you know why I do it?
01:09:53For the animals?
01:09:55That's nice and all, but no.
01:09:57I do it to see that smile on your face.
01:09:59For you.
01:10:01Oh.
01:10:03Amber, I think you know how special
01:10:05I think you are.
01:10:07And when I see something special, I can't let it go.
01:10:11Ryan, I...
01:10:13thank you for thinking so much of me.
01:10:15I know you care,
01:10:17and...
01:10:19And...
01:10:21I appreciate all of the support
01:10:23that you've given to this shelter.
01:10:25And your friendship.
01:10:27But...
01:10:29But, uh,
01:10:31nothing beyond that?
01:10:33No. I'm sorry.
01:10:35I had no idea.
01:10:37I, um...
01:10:39I had to try. Can't blame me, can you?
01:10:41No. And I'm flattered.
01:10:43Well, at least I got that right.
01:10:47I had hoped
01:10:49maybe I could at least take you out.
01:10:51Let you guys know me more.
01:10:53I appreciate that, but
01:10:55I wouldn't want to lead you on.
01:10:57You haven't.
01:10:59Are you sure? I feel so silly.
01:11:01If you want to change your mind
01:11:03about donating to the shelter, I completely respect that.
01:11:05Amber.
01:11:07Don't worry. I'm okay.
01:11:09And, uh,
01:11:11thank you for being honest with me.
01:11:15You're a wonderful person, Ryan.
01:11:21Sorry, man.
01:11:23I guess he spoke up.
01:11:25It's... fine.
01:11:35A record number of adoptions in one day.
01:11:37Seriously. You guys were great.
01:11:39We did it.
01:11:41And I don't know about you, but I am exhausted.
01:11:43We're closed tomorrow and Christmas Day,
01:11:45but to take care of the animals,
01:11:47how about we take turns?
01:11:49Sure. Works for me.
01:11:51Great. Who wants to go out for dinner?
01:11:53I'm in.
01:11:55I'm, uh, actually kind of beat.
01:11:57And I want to get Rex settled at home.
01:11:59Uh, I'll finish up here before I go.
01:12:01Merry Christmas to you both.
01:12:03Come on, Rex.
01:12:05Come on.
01:12:15Hey, I found one of your toys, Rex.
01:12:17Here you go. Here's a good boy.
01:12:19Stay.
01:12:21Don't move.
01:12:23You look adorable.
01:12:27Guess who joined the family?
01:12:29Oh, yeah.
01:12:31It feels right.
01:12:33Already the house is warmer with Rex in it.
01:12:35I could see that coming.
01:12:37You adopting him and all.
01:12:39He's a good dog.
01:12:41Yeah, he is.
01:12:43And you let him in.
01:12:45I'm proud of you.
01:12:47Thanks.
01:12:49So now, it's time to keep going.
01:12:51What do you mean?
01:12:53It's time to let others in your life.
01:12:55You isolated yourself from people who love you.
01:12:57Am I wrong?
01:12:59No.
01:13:01Not really.
01:13:03Just listen.
01:13:05I've tried to keep my friend hat on
01:13:07and support you in whatever way you feel.
01:13:09But let me put on my pastor hat for a minute.
01:13:11Okay?
01:13:13Okay.
01:13:15It's been hard to watch you struggle this past year.
01:13:17Not only because you pushed away your parents,
01:13:19but also God.
01:13:21I'm not trying to.
01:13:23I know my parents meant well
01:13:25and they just want what's best for me,
01:13:27but they don't know what it's like.
01:13:29They were trying in the best way they knew how.
01:13:31With faith.
01:13:33And they're not the only ones that want what's best for you.
01:13:35God does, too.
01:13:37It doesn't seem like it.
01:13:39Why?
01:13:41Because the accident is the hardest thing
01:13:43you've gone through so far?
01:13:45Do you think it's easy for him to watch you struggle?
01:13:47No.
01:13:49It's not.
01:13:51Do you think it's easy for him to watch you struggle?
01:13:53It isn't.
01:13:55Then why?
01:13:57Why let any of this happen?
01:13:59Because he loves you so much
01:14:01he will let you go through those hard times.
01:14:03Not because he wants to see you suffer,
01:14:05but because he knows
01:14:07you will come out stronger and happier
01:14:09if you surrender any suffering to him
01:14:11and if you just don't give up.
01:14:13You really believe that, don't you?
01:14:15I do.
01:14:17In the first chapter of James,
01:14:19he taught that we can see a trial as joy
01:14:21knowing that the testing of our faith
01:14:23produces patience.
01:14:25And that, in turn, strengthens us
01:14:27and perfects us.
01:14:29So the question is,
01:14:31do you believe that?
01:14:41Rex, come here.
01:14:43Ready? Sit.
01:14:45Hey.
01:14:47I've got something for you.
01:14:51I picked it out myself.
01:14:53Do you like it?
01:14:55Should we try it out?
01:14:57Okay, here we go.
01:15:01It suits you.
01:15:03Merry Christmas, buddy.
01:15:15Merry Christmas.
01:15:29Hello, Caleb?
01:15:31Hi.
01:15:33How are you?
01:15:35Is everything okay?
01:15:37Is that him?
01:15:39Yes.
01:15:41Yeah, yeah, everything's fine.
01:15:43It's been a while since we spoke,
01:15:45and I'm sorry about that
01:15:47and a lot of other things, too.
01:15:49It's probably too late
01:15:51and there might not be
01:15:53any flights left,
01:15:55but if you wanted to come
01:15:57visit for Christmas,
01:15:59that'd be okay.
01:16:01I'd be okay with that.
01:16:03I'm gonna look up flights right now.
01:16:05We'll be there Christmas Day
01:16:07at the latest.
01:16:09Okay.
01:16:11Did we make cinnamon rolls this year?
01:16:13I did.
01:16:15All right.
01:16:17Now, all the food is out,
01:16:19so eat and graze as you wish for breakfast,
01:16:21but remember that Christmas dinner
01:16:23is at 5 o'clock, so don't stuff yourselves
01:16:25or you'll be sorry.
01:16:27We never do that.
01:16:29Did you tell James it's time for dinner?
01:16:31I did.
01:16:33And you said you invited Caleb?
01:16:35I did.
01:16:37So, is he coming?
01:16:39He didn't exactly say no, either.
01:16:41Maybe I should have said something,
01:16:43like seconded the invitation.
01:16:45He seemed...
01:16:47I don't know.
01:16:49Maybe he was just tired after the adoption drive.
01:16:51Come to think of it,
01:16:53maybe I shouldn't have asked him to check on the animals
01:16:55at all over Christmas.
01:16:57He's Rex now.
01:16:59Honey, you are overthinking everything.
01:17:01And he'll probably come.
01:17:03I guess we'll see in a few hours.
01:17:05Hold still.
01:17:07I need to get you dry.
01:17:09Almost there.
01:17:11And...good enough.
01:17:13Better, right?
01:17:15You know, we still need to talk about
01:17:17where you're going to sleep.
01:17:19No more sleeping in my bed, okay?
01:17:21Who knows, maybe I'll get you one of those
01:17:23ridiculously large dog pillows.
01:17:25Would you like that? Is that a yes?
01:17:27Okay.
01:17:29Who could it be?
01:17:31Stay here.
01:17:39Mom.

01:18:15He's wonderful.
01:18:17Come here, Grandpa Bean.
01:18:23Where are the little tongs for the veggie tray?
01:18:25Sure.
01:18:27David, did you find the cloth napkins?
01:18:29I'll get it.
01:18:33Oh, Heidi, would you be a dear and grab me a pitcher?
01:18:35Yeah, of course.
01:18:39Something smells good.
01:18:41Yep, dinner's almost ready.
01:18:43I think Caleb's coming too.
01:18:45Oh, he is?
01:18:47Yeah. Why?
01:18:49Just figured he wasn't.
01:18:51Did he say something?
01:18:53No reason.
01:18:55James?
01:18:57Maybe he just wanted to have some space.
01:18:59You know, he's independent.
01:19:03Or...
01:19:05maybe...
01:19:07because he...
01:19:09likes you.
01:19:11He said that?
01:19:13No, but it was clear.
01:19:15Unspoken, but...
01:19:17I could tell.
01:19:19Well, then why wouldn't he come?
01:19:21Well, maybe...
01:19:23because he saw you and Ryan.
01:19:25You know, with the two of you
01:19:27getting together.
01:19:29I'm not with Ryan.
01:19:31Oh.
01:19:33Uh, it looked like it
01:19:35at the adoption fair.
01:19:37No, we're not together.
01:19:41But Caleb thinks I am.
