00:00Working visit to the United Arab Emirates is President Ferdinand R. Marquez Jr.

00:04We will discuss this with Dr. Froilan Calilong,

00:08Political Analyst and Director of the Local Government Development Institute.

00:13Dr. Froilan, good afternoon and welcome to the new Philippines.

00:19Yes, good afternoon, Nia, and thank you so much.

00:22Thank you for having me again, and good afternoon to all of our viewers.

00:28Professor, first of all, what is the importance of President Marquez Jr.'s visit to the UAE?

00:35What do you think the two leaders will discuss during this visit?

00:42Yes, because the UAE is a critical partner for the Philippines in terms of economic ties

00:48as well as the welfare of over 60 workers.

00:52So this meeting between our President and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed,

00:59I think this underscores the importance of cultivating strong relations

01:04with a country that not only hosts a large Filipino diaspora,

01:09but also provides economic opportunities as well as humanitarian support.

01:14So the recent pardon of 143 Filipinos by the UAE demonstrates goodwill,

01:20which I think this visit needs to consolidate even further.

01:24And then, of course, economic and strategic opportunities with the Gulf states,

01:30including the UAE, are increasingly diversifying their economies.

01:35And fostering opportunities for the Philippines in trade, investment, technology transfers

01:41is really a matter of great importance for us.

01:44So I think this visit could be the way for agreements that enhance mutual benefits,

01:50such as greater market access for Filipino goods,

01:55and UAE investments in Philippine infrastructures as well as energy sectors.

02:01And as part of the commitment of the country,

02:05what should the government do to develop trade and investment

02:14mechanism of the Philippines?

02:16Well, basically, I think everything is currently in place in terms of the infrastructure.

02:22We already have what we call the flagship project of our President, the Build Build More.

02:30Of course, it's imperative that for us to have more investments,

02:34we should have infrastructure.

02:39And other than that, our countries, recently, we actually signed the Create More Law,

02:47which again, intends to provide more, let's say, tax ahead rates and tax holidays,

02:56again, in order for us to be able to encourage investments, particularly foreign direct investments.

03:02And then, again, it's clear what will happen to our government,

03:07that it will be able to provide human capital through education and social services provision.

03:17Because, of course, it's difficult for us to have investments

03:22if we do not have a very good source of human capital,

03:27which is, of course, very much needed, especially to comprise the investment mechanism.

03:34Professor Sir, what do you think should be the focus when it comes to the employment of our countrymen in the UAE,

03:41especially when the UAE pardoned more than 100 Filipinos there?

03:48Well, basically, President Marcos will definitely utilize his visit

03:55to express gratitude for the UAE's inclusive treatment of our Filipino workers.

04:01And this is also in line with their trust to recognize the invaluable contribution of our OSWs

04:17and how they significantly affected positively the economy of the UAE and the Philippines.

04:24Of course, through remittances.

04:26So, I think this acknowledgment strengthens the government's commitment even further

04:31to protecting the OSW rights and ensuring that their contributions are being recognized on the global stage.
