00:00I'll be going down as we go.
00:01We're gonna get caught.
00:03The majority of pigs in the UK are killed in gas chambers.
00:06The meat industry say it's humane.
00:08It's fairly well documented it's one of the humane methods of slaughter.
00:13But when I found out what was really going on,
00:15I had to do everything in my power to expose it.
00:18So I asked my partner Tarian to come along for the journey
00:20and I turned to Dan to go in as an undercover employee.
00:24When Joey and I first met, I learned all about his background,
00:27how he turned his life around
00:29and began his work for animals.
00:33Suffering is universal.
00:34You can see in their eyes.
00:35But everything sort of went up a notch
00:36when I come across this notorious gas chamber in Manchester.
00:40Security cameras just there.
00:42So in the UK there are charities set up specifically
00:46to prevent cruelty to animals.
00:48And why weren't more of them speaking out against the use of CO2?
00:51Because we're in London, we should go to DEFRA.
00:54Do you want to pass a message on that?
00:55We are making a documentary.
00:56Do you want to speak to someone from the DEFRA office?
00:59Essentially, if we suspect your suspicious behaviour, which to be honest...
01:02They do legislation for the meat industry.
01:04So we're investigating the meat industry.
01:06But this cruel and scientifically condemned method
01:10by scientist after scientist
01:12is now being adopted by the industry in the UK
01:16and internationally as the humane way to kill pigs.
01:21And then the door comes closing down behind the pigs.
01:24I can hear them scream.
01:26I can see that river abroad.
01:28It stays with me.
01:29It stays with me every day.
01:30I don't think there's any such thing as humane slaughter.
01:33Those animals do not want to die.
01:36Pigs are naturally very intelligent animals
01:39and they can see what's happening, smell, feel.
01:47For months, I studied gas chamber blueprints.
01:50In order to expose what was happening to the pigs in the gas,
01:53I needed to install multiple cameras inside the chambers.
01:56I had to consider so many different variables.
01:59Any mistake could be fatal.
02:01The tension in the room, you could cut it with a knife.
02:04So my heart's pounding.
02:05My body was saying, get the hell out of here.
02:08My worst nightmare was coming through.
02:10I'd have to leave it.
02:11If I'm not willing to risk my life to expose what's happening to them,
02:15then I don't really care about it enough.
