The ICC Champions Trophy started as the ICC knockout trophy in 1998. The sole purpose of this short tournament was to raise funds for non-test-playing countries. The first two editions were held in Bangladesh and Kenya, both of which benefitted from it. But after 2002, test-playing nations started hosting it, which took away the entire point of starting this tournament. Some of you might say that hosting an ICC event is not easy, which is exactly why smaller cricketing nations should host the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy has 15 matches, including the final and semi-final, which can easily be played in a country with two or three decent stadiums like Zimbabwe, Kenya and Scotland. But if top test-playing nations keep hosting it, then what is the point of this tournament, we already have an ODI World Cup. Why add another ODI tournament? There's no point in having it other than to make easy money.
There were plans to scrap this tournament after the 2013 edition, but ICC announced another one for 2017, then for 2025 and 2029. The 2029 edition is in India, which makes no sense, India is the last place that needs Champions Trophy money. The problem is not just with the Champions Trophy; it’s with almost every ICC trophy. The ICC test championship final happens only in England, which gives them an unfair home advantage. This can be shifted to a lesser rich cricket board, but only those that can properly host a test match. I believe hosting rights should be given to two countries for every major ICC tournament. The first should be a test-playing nation, and the other an associate nation that is near the test-playing nation. For example, if South Africa hosts a World Cup, some matches can be scheduled in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Namibia. If Australia is hosting a tournament, give 2,3 matches to PNG. If India hosts a tournament, Nepal can be given 1,2 matches. The 2024 T20 World Cup was a great example of this, with the USA hosting a few games and the rest of the tournament happening in the West Indies. This model makes sure that associate nations also prosper while maintaining the proper standard of the game.
