Hymen breaking, using tampons and virginity tests… This gynaecologist breaks it all down.

👩‍⚕️: Dr. Dhwani Mago
Transcript
00:00I've never done this before.
00:01This is my first time.
00:02The first time is the most fun.
00:05No, I'll tell you.
00:12A doctor or a gynaecologist can tell
00:15whether you're a virgin or not.
00:17There is no physical examination
00:19that can determine whether you're a virgin or not.
00:23Some people think that a doctor
00:25can just tell by looking at the hymen
00:27whether a person has had intercourse.
00:29Well, hymen, it is a stretchy elastic tissue
00:33and it can tear due to many reasons
00:36like doing splits or during sports
00:38or due to some accidental trauma
00:40or while inserting a tampon.
00:42So you must have heard of these virginity tests
00:45being performed in many countries.
00:47There is no scientific basis behind this
00:49and it is actually a violation of human rights.
00:53A woman must bleed during her first intercourse
00:56as the hymen breaks.
00:58Hymen is not a solid wall or a seal that breaks.
01:02It's a stretchy elastic tissue,
01:04just like a scrunchie,
01:05that stretches a little bit during your first intercourse.
01:09So phrases like deflowering or popping the cherry
01:13or losing one's virginity are absolutely contradictory
01:16as nothing is really lost.
01:18Some women may bleed during their first intercourse
01:22due to lack of lubrication or tight vaginal muscles.
01:25And some women don't.
01:27You can lose your virginity by using a tampon.
01:30Well, here, virginity is very subjective,
01:34but usually it's about having an entire sexual experience
01:38and the most essential of all, sexual penetration.
01:41So using a tampon does not really mean
01:44that you've lost your virginity.
01:49Your partner can tell whether you're a virgin or not.
01:52The only way your partner will know
01:55whether you're a virgin is if you tell them.
01:58Like I said, many times women do not bleed
02:01during their first intercourse
02:03and vaginas do not get loose after having sex.
02:10Being a virgin is sacred.
02:12The cultural significance of virginity is age-old
02:16and is everywhere.
02:17It's almost a 4,000-year-old story
02:20where women were considered to be of high value
02:23and sacred if their hymens were intact.
02:26Till now, in many cultures,
02:28the ritual of displaying bloody sheets
02:30after a married couple's first night
02:33is still being practiced.
02:35Like I explained, that many women do not bleed
02:38during their first intercourse.
02:40So there is no scientific basis of such rituals
02:44and we must stop believing in such absurd virginity tests.
02:48And it also creates unnecessary anxiety in the woman's mind.
