Germany's centre-left Social Democracts have chosen to officially nominate current Chancellor Olaf Scholz as their party's candidate despite his low approval ratings.

00:07for German Chancellor, ahead of snap elections in February.
00:11Scholz is the current German Chancellor, but there were weeks of tense discussions within
00:15his party of whether he was the right person for the job.
00:20His ruling traffic light coalition, compromised of the Social Democratic Party, the Greens
00:24and the Liberal-Free Democratic Party, collapsed earlier this month after he fired his Finance
00:30Minister.
00:31Lacking a parliamentary majority, Scholz agreed to hold a no-confidence vote in December,
00:36with general elections set for 23 February 2025.
00:42Some Social Democrats had rallied around German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who enjoys
00:47higher approval ratings as a replacement for Scholz.
00:51Pistorius said he wasn't available to run for Chancellor last week, paving the way for
00:56Scholz at the top of the party's ballot.
