00:00I've never been one to be quiet about the fact that I'm Latina.
00:04I think it's important.
00:06I never put the kind of responsibility on my shoulders of role model or anything,
00:10but I do feel I have a responsibility.
00:13I have a responsibility to represent myself, my family, my culture in the best way that I can.
00:25I do this not for an award.
00:28No, I do this to connect with people and make them feel things because I want to feel something.
00:47It was at the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club in my old neighborhood up in the Bronx
00:52where I was introduced to the performing arts.
00:55It's where I first sang, first danced, and performed for an audience.
01:11Coming all the way from Bronx, New York, Miss Jennifer Lopez.
01:25But as far as for Latino actors in Hollywood, it's not that great because we're not considered for roles that are not Latino,
01:53but meanwhile other people are considered to play our roles who are not Latino, so it's a weird thing.
02:24I started making records in the 90s in the era of the waif and the supermodel.
02:28And slowly as curves began to be embraced, the girl who wanted to combine street style with couture began to blossom.
02:53I'm not one to really follow trends, but I kind of was just influenced from who I was from the time I was very young and living in the Bronx.
03:23Ugly, vicious shit was written about her in ways that if you wrote it now, you would literally be fired.
03:53It is my greatest hope that our efforts with Amnesty International will encourage other people throughout the world to act,
04:20ensuring that finally justice will be served.
04:50Today, this landmark moment inspires me to work harder and dream bigger for all that is the future.
04:58I'm really grateful for her friendship, her generosity, which is huge, for showing the world the beauty of booty.
05:09And making it easier for a whole lot of girls to love theirs, including me.
05:14Jennifer, thanks for having me be here.
05:20And I immediately felt like I had to get this film made.
05:47No matter the obstacle, a survivor just trying to get her piece of the American dream, Ramona, like so many of us, was a mass of contradictions.
05:57Mentor and manipulator, mother, fighter, entrepreneur, and hustler.
06:04When I think of my daughter, when I think of all the little girls of the world, to be able to have that, to see that, two Latinas doing this at this time, in this country at this time, it's just very empowering for us.
06:26This land is your grave.
06:56I'm trying to give you something with substance, not just us out there shaking our fucking asses.
07:15I want something real.
07:16I haven't seen the finished product yet, so I'm nervous.
