00:00The world set the Sustainable Development Goals as its aspiration of improving the world by 2030.
00:08It's very important to pay attention to these goals because it's, you know, how we're making
00:13women empowered, how we're improving food security, how we're reducing childhood death.
00:20Sadly, many setbacks, including the pandemic and the Ukrainian war,
00:25mean that we won't achieve many of these goals. That doesn't mean that we should do less. It
00:32really means we should do more, more generous aid to poor countries, more innovation to help
00:37the poor countries. We were on track and making great progress before the pandemic, and we need
00:43to get back to that. Even though there's pressing needs in rich countries, the poor countries don't
00:49get enough of our generosity. How can we change the model to really affect long-lasting change?
00:56Well, the model was working very well up until the pandemic. I mean, we'd cut childhood death
01:02in half since the year 2000. We reduced the burden of the infectious diseases.
01:07We can see how to improve crop productivity pretty dramatically. The current system is okay.
01:13We didn't anticipate the pandemic, and, you know, raising the visibility of the needs of people in
01:21poor countries, we can be more creative about that, but just, you know, tuning that as a priority
01:26within the current system.
