00:00At 12, Bradley Cooper decided he would become an actor after seeing the David Lynch film,
00:06Elephant Man.
00:07When I was a kid, I saw the movie, and it made me want to be an actor.
00:10I've always felt an absolute connection to him, probably thought about him maybe every
00:15day since I was 12.
00:16At 18, while still in high school, he wrote for his local newspaper, Philadelphia Daily
00:21News.
00:22At 21, while an undergrad at Georgetown, he spent six months studying abroad in the south

00:35New School in New York City, where he incurred $70,000 of student loan debt.
00:40I grew up and I looked like a girl when I was a kid, and I was like a chip that I had
00:44to be a tough guy even though I didn't look like one.
00:46At the same time, to help pay for school, he worked as a doorman at a luxury New York
00:50hotel.
00:51During that time, he met Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time.
00:55While he was a hotel guest, he says he remembers helping DiCaprio up to his room with his luggage.
01:00At 24, he got his first role in Sex and the City alongside Sarah Jessica Parker.
01:05At 26, he clinched his first leading TV role in the J.J. Abrams series, Alias, with co-star
01:11Jennifer Garner.
01:13The experience ended badly.
01:14Convinced he would be fired, Cooper asked Abrams to write him off of the show.
01:18It was then that his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction began.
01:22He told The Hollywood Reporter,
01:37At 29, he decided to get sober.
01:40At 30, he got his big screen break in Wedding Crashers, and more Hollywood leading roles
01:45followed.
01:46At 34, he gained international recognition with his role as Phil, the playboy protagonist
01:51of the Hangover trilogy.
01:53That ran until 2013.
01:55Speaking to The Guardian, he said the role shared no resemblance with his real life.
01:59At 36, after learning his father had cancer, Cooper moved back home to spend time with him.
02:04Five months later, his father succumbed to the disease.
02:07Cooper says he, quote,
02:13Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he shared,
02:22It was a schism.
02:24And its aftershock has not stopped.
02:26And we need each other.
02:27So here we are.
02:28But don't get me wrong.
02:30It's not without its complications.
02:32It's not like I live in a compound and she's in the guest house.
02:34No.
02:35She's in the next room.
02:36The same year, he fulfilled one of his biggest dreams, appearing alongside his acting role
02:40model Robert De Niro in the film Limitless, his first as a producer.
02:45Still that year, he was named Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine.
02:51I was being punked.
02:53And maybe I was, if you look at how it all turned out.
