00:00Applications for the Biden administration's student debt relief program are no longer being
00:04accepted following recent legal pushback. So what's going on? Brute can explain in less than
00:0960 seconds. The Department of Education is no longer accepting applications after a second
00:14federal court blocked the student debt relief program. In August, Biden announced his debt
00:18forgiveness plan that would allow qualified Americans to erase up to $20,000 of federal
00:24student loan debt. When the application initially opened, nearly 26 million people applied and 16
00:30million were approved. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, however, initially blocked the program
00:35after multiple Republican-led states filed a lawsuit. A district judge in Texas also recently
00:41ruled that Biden's actions were unlawful because he needed congressional approval to create the
00:46program. The White House has appealed the decision, but it's believed that the question
00:50of the legality of the program will ultimately be answered by the Supreme Court. And although
00:54student loan debt payments were paused during the pandemic, they are scheduled to start back in January.
