00:00The trailer for one of this year's most anticipated films just dropped,
00:03so we need to talk about the long winding road that led to Barbie.
00:07Greta Gerwig's live action adaptation is hitting theaters this summer and has actually been a long
00:11time in the making. In 2014, Mattel and Sony Pictures announced they were making a Barbie
00:16feature film, written by Sex and the City screenwriter Jenny Bix. One year later, Juno
00:20and Jennifer's body screenwriter Diablo Cody was instead asked to write the project, but a script
00:25ultimately never came to fruition. In 2017, it was announced that Amy Schumer would play Barbie,
00:29but she ended up dropping out of the project due to creative differences. Anne Hathaway was then
00:34briefly announced as a replacement, but also soon departed from the film. By 2018, the movie entered
00:39a standstill, with it ultimately being handed over to Warner Brothers and with Margot Robbie
00:43set to star as the final Barbie. In 2019, Greta Gerwig signed on to co-write the script with
00:48Noah Baumbach, and later in 2021, it was announced that she would direct it as well. That same year,
00:53Ryan Gosling was announced as Ken, joining a stacked lineup with Issa Rae, Simu Liu,
00:57Dua Lipa, and more. Now nearly nine years later, we have the first official trailer,
01:01which tells the tale of Barbie's expulsion from Barbieland and her journey through the real world.
01:06Barbie will make its long-awaited debut in theaters July 21st.
