Chrissy Teigen’s life-saving abortion has sparked discussions about pregnancies that are terminated for medical reasons (TFMR).
Transcript
00:00Chrissy Teigen revealed that she had an abortion two years ago, but we need to talk about the
00:04confusion and complexities surrounding pregnancies that are terminated for medical reasons.
00:08In 2020, Teigen and husband John Legend shared that they lost their third child in the 20th
00:13week of pregnancy to what Teigen previously labeled as a miscarriage. But in light of the
00:17Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, she came to understand that she actually had a
00:21life-saving abortion. During a recent speaking engagement, Teigen explained that neither her
00:26or her son would have survived without medical intervention. A situation like this would be
00:31classified as termination for medical reasons, or TFMR. This involves the need to terminate a
00:36pregnancy either because the fetus is not viable or because the mother is physically at risk.
00:41Abortions that take place later in pregnancy often look similar to a miscarriage.
00:45Both a later abortion and starting labor for a viable pregnancy use the same medications and
00:50processes. While Teigen's announcement did draw some online criticism, it has also gained support
00:54from other women who have dealt with TFMR.
