00:00The World Health Organization officially declared monkeypox a global health emergency over the

00:04weekend. So how has the disease affected the U.S. recently? Brute can explain in less than 60 seconds.

00:09The U.S. has reported nearly 2,900 confirmed cases of monkeypox, a rare viral disease that causes a

00:15rash and is transmitted through close contact. That number of cases is expected to climb much

00:20higher as tests become more readily available. U.S. officials are working to expand testing and

00:26give vaccines to those who need it. But some health officials say that supplies do not match

00:30the demand. Now the Biden administration is discussing whether or not the disease should

00:34be declared an emergency in the U.S. And while monkeypox continues to primarily affect men who

00:39have sex with other men, it is not a sexually transmitted disease. And there is a small number

00:43of cisgender women and two toddlers who have tested positive. Unlike with COVID-19, both testing and

00:49vaccines existed prior to the monkeypox outbreak. Scientists currently do not think the disease will

00:55spiral into a pandemic like COVID-19 since it does not spread as easily.
