00:00Cardi B and Offset are the latest celebrities to have their own McDonald's meal,
00:04but we need to talk about why some franchises are boycotting it.
00:07Ahead of the Super Bowl on Valentine's Day,
00:08McDonald's announced that they'd be teaming up with Cardi B and Offset for
00:11their latest celebrity-endorsed meal. However, a small but vocal group of
00:15franchises are calling for the chain to stop selling the meal, saying partnering
00:18with musicians who create music with explicit lyrics and themes will hurt the family-friendly
00:22brand. Many cited what is known as the Golden Arches Code, which prohibits partnerships with
00:26celebrities that may quote, have potential risk to damage the brand. However, McDonald's has had
00:31previous partnerships with artists such as BTS, J Balvin, Saweetie, and Travis Scott,
00:35all of whom explore mature themes in their music. McDonald's' chief marketing officer,
00:39Tariq Hassan, said in a written statement that the negative feedback is coming from
00:43a small group of franchises and not representative of the widespread support for the meal. He also
00:47explained that these kinds of collaborations have not only increased business momentum,
00:50but kept McDonald's at the center of culture. Hassan said McDonald's stands behind their
00:54partnership with Cardi B and Offset as they have been incredible partners and therefore
00:58support them as a family.
