For the majority of artists, making music is financially unsustainable. According to a census conducted by the Musicians’ Union, nearly half of working musicians in the UK earn less than £14,000 a year from their craft, while a further half have to sustain their careers with other forms of income. It’s easy to imagine that these are the aspiring performers making tunes in their bedrooms and moonlighting as bartenders, but even household names are turning to alternative income streams.British singer Kate Nash announced on Thursday that she would start posting pictures of her bottom on adult website OnlyFans to raise money for her tour. The Foundations singer has nearly a million monthly listeners on Spotify, and is playing all across the UK, including a sold out gig in London, but says that touring is a loss making exercise.

00:00A lot of artists are going into debt from going on tour, so we need extra money and
00:06you're trying to make it up with t-shirts.
00:08And so I've started an OnlyFans account and I'm selling pictures of my arse because, A,
00:13I think that's quite funny and, you know, I do find it empowering.
00:16I think sex work is really empowering.
00:18I think that women being in control of what they're selling is really empowering.
00:25As an artist, I feel there's like less, much, I mean, in the past like 72 hours, I've had
00:30so many more conversations about ethics, consent, what I'm willing to do, what I'm not willing
00:36to do.
00:37Like people really wanting to pay me for things, asking me questions, kind of, there's like
00:41boundaries and control that I don't think artists are taught when they enter the industry
00:45from the music business.
00:46I think the music industry could really learn from the sex industry and I know a lot of
00:50people are also exploited in the sex industry as well.
00:53So I'm not naive to that, but I'm in a sort of unique position and having this unique
00:58experience and I feel like, you know, I wouldn't be on the radio talking to you and being able
01:03to talk about the issue that I care about if I hadn't started selling pictures of my
01:08bum.
