Is Magneto Professor Xavier's brother? The X-Men story that has never been told
The rivalry between Professor Xavier and Magneto is one of the most famous in comics. With very different visions for the future of their species, the two mutants end up on opposite sides in most Marvel stories, but did you know that Stan Lee originally planned for them to be brothers?
When he was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1963, Magneto didn't have a very well-developed story. Without the Holocaust survivor backstory, which was created by Chris Claremont years later, the Master of Magnetism was a generic villain who sought to dominate the world.
But according to Screen Rant, back in Comics Creators on X-Men in 2006, Stan Lee had a chat with Claremont and revealed that he had a very bold idea for Magneto: make him Professor Xavier's brother.
When Claremont asked if Lee approved of his story involving Magneto and the Holocaust, the late creator said:
“I thought it was a great idea. It would add so much to the character, it would really bring layers to him and make him more likable. I'm sorry I wasn't the one who thought of this myself. My idea was always — I always wanted Magneto to end up being Professor X's brother. If I had stayed in this comic, that's what I would have done.”
It is worth remembering that Xavier has a twin sister, the villain Cassandra Nova, and is the half-brother of Cain Marko, better known as the Fanatic.
