00:00What is string tension and why is it important?
00:03Is it really just low tension for beginners and high tension for pros and advanced?
00:07Let's talk about that in our new series, All Things Badminton Part 1.
00:11String tension is how tight the string is installed in the head frame of your racket.
00:17Usually, other brand new rackets don't have a string installed here.
00:21But there are also other rackets that have a string installed.
00:23You can save money there.
00:24However, you will not be able to choose what tension to put.
00:27There are two measurements that are used for string tension.
00:29Here in the Philippines, we use pounds.
00:32But mostly, in other countries, they use kilos.
00:35Mostly, you will see rackets here that are 18 to 30 pounds.
00:39Those are the common and average players.
00:41So now, let's talk about whether high tension is better than low tension.
00:45Let's give advantages and disadvantages to these two.
00:49First of all, the high tension string gives you more control when you slice,
00:54when you drop, and when you want to control the player.
00:57The second advantage is that it's super crispy when you hit it.
01:01When you try to hit a racket that has 30 tension,
01:04the sound is really loud.
01:06Every hit really gives you a lot of support,
01:08even if it's a drive, even if it's a smash, even if it's a kill.
01:11It's really good for the ears.
01:13But the downside of high tension is that it breaks easily
01:17because the string is tighter and the sweet spot is smaller.
01:21The sweet spot of the racket is usually in the middle.
01:23The more tight your string is,
01:26for example, 28, 29, 30, it shrinks.
01:29Sometimes, you feel like the sound of your stick is dead
01:33because it hits the side.
01:34You need to hit it precisely,
01:36you need to have a good swing,
01:38you need to have a good timing.
01:39If not, you won't be able to control the ball properly.
01:42So in low tension, guys, it's the opposite of everything in high tension.
01:46The lower the tension of your racket,
01:49the more less control.
01:50Because the shuttlecock has more time to stay in your string bed.
01:54So if you mix this up,
01:55it really has extra power to produce
01:58because the tension is lower.
02:00Another advantage of this, especially if you're saving,
02:03the low tension is really strong.
02:05Even if it's ears or muds, it won't break easily.
02:09It's even balanced for you, guys.
02:11And last but not the least,
02:12another super advantage of this low tension
02:15is that it has a super big sweet spot.
02:17It's almost the whole frame.
02:19It's forgiving, especially if you don't perfect the timing and swing of the racket.
02:22So what is the string tension really for you?
02:25The best answer to that is, it depends.
02:27If you have a perfect timing in mixing and swinging your racket,
02:30if you're prone to injury because the tension is higher,
02:33the stress is higher here on the elbow, shoulder, and wrist.
02:37If you just want to play it chill,
02:38your clear and smash is stronger.
02:40If you're a beginner, what I recommend is 24 and below
02:43because it has a bigger sweet spot
02:45and there's a big chance that you'll miss hit when hitting the racket.
02:48If you're an intermediate or club player,
02:50and you can drop, smash, and clear,
02:53your control is fine.
02:54It's perfect for you if it's 24 to 28.
02:56And if you're pro or advanced, it's perfect for you if it's 28 to 34.
02:59The number of string tension I gave
03:01is only recommended by the coach.
03:03It still depends on your preference and the string you're using.
03:06Look at my players on the racket wall.
03:08The tension of my two rackets is 30.
03:12When I didn't know how to do badminton, I thought it was strong.
03:14The tension is 28
03:16because that's the only thing that can bounce.
03:18Tension number 26
03:20recommended by Lodi Ransel.
03:23The tension of my racket is 28
03:25so it's not too high and not too low.
03:2828 has a pre-stretch of 10%.
03:3126 to 30 for me is for intermediate to high intermediate.
03:35And that's it, guys.
03:36Thank you so much for joining me in this first part of this series.
