00:00Brazilian Federal Police formally accused former President Jair Bolsonaro in the case

00:05of attempted coup d'etat against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

00:09Our correspondent Brian Meyer has the details.

00:13In Brasilia, Brazil's Federal Police have just released their final report of a nearly

00:17two-year investigation into the failed January 8th, 2023 coup attempt in which thousands

00:25of people stormed the Supreme Court building, the Congress building, and the Presidential

00:30Palace, destroying property.

00:33Well across Brazil, high-tension electrical towers were sabotaged, leading to blackouts

00:39in an attempt to pressure President Lula into declaring a state of emergency which would

00:45have turned power over to the military.

00:50Included with this final report is a list of 37 names of people who have been indicted

00:56for three crimes, forming an organized criminal organization, attempting a coup, and trying

01:04to create a rupture with a democratic rule of law.

01:08The most prominent name on this list, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who has already

01:12been indicted for two other crimes.

01:16Also on this list, his former vice presidential candidate in 2022, General Walter Braga Neto,

01:22who was also his defense minister.

01:26General Augusto Heleno, who many people around the world remember as being the commander

01:31of the Minastah troops during the notorious Cite Soleil massacre in Haiti, who served

01:37as Bolsonaro's chief of institutional security.

01:42Also the former chief of Bolsonaro's intelligence apparatus, Abin Alexandre Ramegan, and a former

01:49employee of the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia, Felipe Martins.

01:54So what are the next steps?

01:55The report has been submitted to the Attorney General's office.

01:59The Attorney General is going to review all of the evidence and decide for each individual

02:03case if the government will formally press charges.

02:07This process is expected to take a couple of weeks because it's a long document.

02:11And then trials will start being scheduled.

02:15It's important to remember this is Bolsonaro's third indictment, so his legal troubles are

02:19mounting and the idea that he could get any kind of amnesty, along with the other people

02:25who've been arrested for involvement in the coup attempt, is quickly fading away as his

02:30legal worries mount.
