00:00All right, all guests on 95.7 The Game appear on the River Islands Guest Line.
00:04It's time for you to discover the islands, River Islands in Lathrop.
00:09Eddie, what's going on, man?
00:10Man, I'm hanging in there, I'm just looking at that Oberwiener team y'all look at every
00:16night.
00:17Oh, Eddie coming in hot!
00:21Before we get into the jokes, let me ask you this, Eddie, Steve Kerr said, talking about
00:27using an 11 or a 12 man rotation, and so far he's kind of stuck to it.
00:34Is that sustainable?
00:35Yeah, it is, because most of the players on that team are pretty similar to each other.
00:44They're not heavily counted on to do a lot past Steph, Buddy Hill, Wiggins, in regards
00:51to the scoring department.
00:54So they're a lot like Draymond in a sense.
00:57The role that Draymond plays for this team, they're branching off of Draymond more than
01:04they're branching off of Steph, Buddy Hill, and Wiggins, you get what I'm saying.
01:10So Steve was a role player himself, so he understands the dynamic of it, he understands
01:17what the state of them, and what to get them to do.
01:21And then also send a message by playing time, like if you're playing well, you'll stay on
01:26the court.
01:27If you're not, the next guy that's waiting to get those minutes is going to be on the
01:31court.
01:32That's the way he's coaching.
01:34I think he planned it all along, and I'll just go back to the summer.
01:40And Steve's a good friend, so I want you all to say that first, I love him to death, okay?
01:46But everybody was worried about and complaining that he wasn't playing Tatum in the Olympics.
01:55I happen to think he did Tatum a favor, in a sense, because Tatum, he's fresh, he's aggressive,
02:03you saw what he did last night against Cleveland, and then he played the heck out of KD and
02:09Devin.
02:10Like, he wore him down.
02:11He wore LeBron down.
02:12He wore AD down.
02:13AD was limping at times, he still had him out there on the court.
02:14See, Steve's good.
02:15He's like, I don't have to deal with Boston, so I'm just going to concentrate on just making
02:16Devin Booker turn into a defender and get his mind off the score.
02:17So it'd be hard for him to make the adjustment back to scoring.
02:18But he's a really good professional.
02:19He's a great coach.
02:20He's a great coach.
02:21He's a great coach.

04:55He's a great coach.
04:56He's a great coach.

05:07He's a great coach.
05:08He's a great coach.
05:09He's a great coach.
05:10He's a great coach.
05:11He's a great coach.
05:12He's a great coach.
05:13He's a great coach.
05:14He's a great coach.
05:15He's a great coach.
05:16He's a great coach.
05:17He's a great coach.
05:18He's a great coach.
05:19He's a great coach.
05:20He's a great coach.
05:21He's a great coach.
05:22He's a great coach.
05:23He's a great coach.
05:24He's a great coach.
05:25He's a great coach.
05:26He's a great coach.
05:27He's a great coach.
05:28He's a great coach.
05:29He's a great coach.
05:30He's a great coach.
05:31He's a great coach.
05:32He's a great coach.
05:33He's a great coach.
05:34He's a great coach.
05:35He's a great coach.
05:36He's a great coach.
05:37He's a great coach.
05:38He's a great coach.
05:39Like, can you imagine if he grabbed Charles Oakley's ankle?
05:43No.
05:44Yeah, we can't, man.
05:45Can you imagine if he grabbed Robert Parrish's ankle?
05:49Or Karl Malone or Charles' ankle?
05:51Can you imagine?
05:53His manhood would be tested then.
05:56Like, he's talking about Edie, and you're talking about a rookie that's just gotten to the league.
06:01A guy that's so big and strong that if he lost his temper, he probably would kill you.
06:07Yeah.
06:08But yet, you're testing his manhood.
06:11He's got to test his manhood on the floor.
06:14I just don't understand that part of it.
06:16You know, be physical.
06:18You know, we had a rule.
06:19Don't hit below the belt.
06:20Don't hit above the shoulder.
06:22Okay?
06:23And that rule was forever in the league.
06:27And so, when you're grabbing somebody, they're getting ready to run down the court,
06:31and they're not expecting that.
06:34Like, if you're boxing out with Draymond, you're already expecting you might get an elbow to the stomach.
06:41Yeah.
06:42An elbow to the chest.
06:43You know that could come, right?
06:45Or if you're going in for a shot, it might be a hard foul.
06:49You expect it.
06:51Yeah.
06:52If you don't expect getting a rebound and throwing an outlet pad,
06:56damn dude grabbing your damn ankle.
07:00The one thing I was thinking of—
07:02He doesn't get it, man.
07:03He does not get it.
07:05You know, that can ruin somebody's career.
07:09You know, you just don't do stuff like that.
07:11And then promoted and started talking like, you know, we got to make him tough.
07:15Come on, man.
07:16If Steven Adams wanted to go ballistic when he hit him below the belt that time,
07:22what do you all think would have happened?
07:25He had pneumonia, Eddie.
07:27Yep.
07:28Eddie Johnson joining us.
07:29What do you think would have been the result?
07:32Pain.
07:35Adams would have thrown him around the arena.
07:39Oh, man.
07:40Eddie Johnson.
07:41That's the part that just gets me.
07:44I got you.
07:45Eddie Johnson joining us on 95.7 The Game.
07:47Played 17 years in the league.
07:49Phoenix Suns analyst since 2003.
07:53Let me get back to this 11- or 12-man rotation,
07:57because the way I'm looking at it right now,
08:00I feel like half the league is load managing.
08:03The new goal of the season for players is to play 60 games.
08:08And my feeling is that the reason this could work,
08:12in the regular season particularly,
08:14is if you've got 10 or 11 guys who are playing every night,
08:18and they're playing teams that are missing their star players every other night,
08:23I feel like the Warriors can win a lot of regular season games this year this way.
08:29I don't know about the playoffs, but I think the regular season,
08:33they might be able to use this to their advantage these days.
08:38Well, it's all predicated right now,
08:41based on how everything is working with this way of coaching.
08:45Steph has to stay healthy, because he is the hub of all of this.
08:51And then Buddy Hill's got to keep playing like he wants the 6th man of the year off the bat.
08:57If either one of those guys are compromised,
09:00then I foresee a 10-game losing streak.
09:03Okay?
09:04That's how quick it can turn.
09:06Now, you see what's happening to my sons.
09:09KD and Bill go down, and we've lost, what, five in a row?
09:13Like, it can turn quickly if you lose key guys
09:18that lead the other guys that play a role.
09:21Because if Steph goes down, then what?
09:23Kaminga's got to be more aggressive.
09:25Can he do it consistently?
09:27Right?
09:28You know, if Draymond goes down, and I put Draymond as the third person,
09:34Kyle Anderson all of a sudden has got to do his best Draymond impersonation.
09:39Like, over a period of starter minutes.
09:42Minutes a game.
09:44Right?
09:45Will he be able to do that?
09:47See, that is the question.
09:49Right?
09:50That's the question that you have to deal with
09:52when you're dealing with a team that's playing this way.
09:56But the way that they're playing now, they have a lot of confidence.
10:00They got great hustle guys.
10:02They're playing great defense.
10:04It's just a lot of good things to say
10:07about what's going on right now in Golden State.
10:10And I'm just tired of saying that they're done.
10:13Right?
10:14I didn't have them going through that.
10:16I didn't have them making the playoffs this year.
10:18I didn't.
10:19I was looking at the roster.
10:20And look, Kyle Anderson is a kid that I've trained since high school.
10:23Okay?
10:24So, I know he can play.
10:26Buddy Hill can flat out shoot it.
10:28But he looked like he couldn't shoot last year himself.
10:31Like, so, for me, and I was looking at the team, Moses Moody.
10:35I mean, look, when he does play his minutes,
10:37I mean, the guy looks like he can play.
10:39He's got good offense, but it's hard to find consistent minutes for him.
10:44That was the question mark.
10:46Kaminga.
10:47I mean, is he going to be upset because of his contract
10:50and not getting extended?
10:52You know, so is that going to play a role with him?
10:55So, there's just a lot of questions out there, right?
10:57Gary Payton II.
10:58You know, he has a propensity to get hurt a lot
11:01because of the way that he plays.
11:03So, I was looking at all of that, and I was like, I don't know.
11:07You know, and so, I'm going to stop doing that with any Steve Kerr.
11:11I stopped doing it with Popovich.
11:13And obviously, Steve Kerr is a disciple of Popovich.
11:16You just never count them out because of their ability to galvanize guys
11:20and motivate and get them ready to play.
11:23Eddie, I'm a 70s baby, man.
11:25I don't want to sound like I'm complaining to you, but it's real.
11:28I know these guys, these players are not faking injuries,
11:31but every time I sit down to watch a game, it's like, who's not playing?
11:35I get that.
11:36Guys are trying to get better.
11:37But, Eddie, you used to shoot it.
11:39You shoot it with the best of them.
11:41But this three-ball epidemic is, I believe, out of control and hurting the game.
11:47You say what to that?
11:50Yeah.
11:51To me, it's over the top, but that's the way they're going to play.
11:55And I guess we can push back on it all day long, right?
12:00As a matter of fact, all night long.
12:02I just saw Lionel Richie in Las Vegas.
12:05Nice.
12:06Yeah.
12:07Yeah.
12:08I got a little all-night long.
12:11Yeah.
12:12So, to me, look, if you look at my numbers, I scored over 20,000 playoffs included,
12:18and I averaged one three a game in my career.
12:21But I can shoot the three.
12:22I shot the three one year in my career.
12:24That's when I won six, man.
12:26I shot 42%.
12:28I can shoot it, but I'm like, I was DeMar DeRozan before DeMar DeRozan.
12:33Case in point, everybody in the 80s was DeMar DeRozan before DeMar DeRozan.
12:38And that ability just to balance your game and do it well.
12:42Steph balances his game.
12:44People focus on his threes.
12:46But Steph got every damn thing.
12:48So, he's just not all about threes.
12:51He knows how to balance his threes with his twos, with his drives,
12:55and that's what makes them so great.
12:58But, yeah, when it's going good, like Boston was last night against Cleveland,
13:04it looked good.
13:05You're like, oh, wow.
13:06But then other times, like in the second half,
13:08they started missing them threes and Cleveland got back in the game.
13:11Right.
13:12They have a flow that takes the, I think, control from the coach, in a sense,
13:19to calm it down.
13:21And, yeah, I would like more half-court sets.
13:23I would like more half-court design plays run and stuff like that.
13:29But it's not going to happen.
13:30Eddie, let me finish up with this one for you.
13:33Because Kyle Anderson, obviously, is a new warrior.
13:37And Jonathan Kaminga is in his fifth year.
13:40And, you know, there's still a lot of excitement about Kaminga,
13:44obviously his athleticism, things like that.
13:47But there's always been some frustration out here among the fans
13:51that Steve hasn't gone to him a lot.
13:53But I said this earlier, and you just tell me what you think.
13:57I'm like, if there's five minutes to go in a tight game
14:00and Steve Kerr looks down his bench and sees Kyle Anderson
14:04and Jonathan Kaminga, he's going to pick Kyle Anderson.
14:08But people have asked me what they see in Kyle Anderson,
14:14why he's the player he is.
14:17You trained him.
14:18Can you answer that?
14:20He's a heck of a defender on the ball.
14:22You can't go around him.
14:24They call him slow-mo.
14:27But his arms are so long that it covers his inability to move
14:31maybe as quickly laterally as most players.
14:34So if you try to go around him, he flicks at the ball.
14:37It's just a tremendous gift he has.
14:39He's had it since high school.
14:41And he's a very good rebounder.
14:43So, you know, again, he's got the long arms,
14:45so he's going to go in there and get tough rebounds for you.
14:48He'll block a shot for you.
14:50And strategically, defensively,
14:52he's always going to be on point with what they're running.
14:56Kaminga is more talented,
14:59but he's almost like probably in their minds he's like a loose cannon
15:03that they don't want to use right now because Steph is their loose cannon
15:07and Buddy Hill is their loose cannon.
15:09And Andrew Wiggins on night when he has it going is their loose cannon,
15:13and that's what he's going to roll with.
15:15And so anytime you have another guy and those three are out there,
15:20he's going to turn to Kyle Anderson
15:22because he doesn't want Kaminga out there taking a shot
15:26that's reserved for those three.
15:28Now, Kaminga has to...
15:31What he has to do, he has to win Steve Holmes.
15:34Everybody's had to do it.
15:35I had to do it as a player.
15:37Coach has tried to restrict me, restrict me, restrict me.
15:39What you do is you push, you push, you push
15:42until they finally say, okay, he ready.
15:44A lot of times it's a test.
15:47And Kaminga can't pout.
15:49Sometimes I kind of view him as a pouter.
15:51I don't really know for sure, but it does to me.
15:54And you just can't do that.
15:56I know he didn't get his contract, and that's probably on his mind as well,
15:59but you just can't do it.
16:01He's a very talented player.
16:03He's going to be in the league a long time.
16:04He's going to make a lot of money.
16:05It might not be the kind of money he wants at the time and place,
16:09but he's going to be in the league
16:11because he has everything to become a very good player.
16:14He just has to be patient.
16:16Eddie, thanks as always, man.
16:18You're the man, and I guess we're going to see you next weekend,
16:21maybe in about two weeks,
16:24and you'll be able to get an up-close look at this warrior team.
16:27Yeah, you're going to see me.
16:29And we're going to come prepared, though.
16:33They wasn't on the schedule early enough
16:37to try to feel like they can walk and get a good win.
16:41They're going to see KD, who, by the way,
16:43was probably playing at the NBFC level before he went down.
16:47And, you know, Bradley Beal's having a heck of a year as well.
16:50So, we got a young rookie, too,
16:53that could possibly put the clamps on Steph for a few minutes.
16:56Just a few minutes.
16:58Just a few minutes.
16:59Well, Eddie, I'll tell you this.
17:01You need to be worried about Brunson and company tonight.
17:04Tell the Bay Area who you're talking about.
17:06Hey, look, look.
17:07He gave us city last year.
17:10So, yeah, we're going to throw Ryan Dunn on him a little bit.
17:13Oh, Ryan Dunn.
17:16Yeah.
17:17All right, Eddie.
17:18Thanks, as always, man.
17:19You're the best.
17:20Eddie Johnson.
