00:00:00On behalf of all of us, on behalf of all of us, on behalf of all of us, on behalf of all
00:00:27So when you've been watching the action all the time, what are your thoughts so far on
00:00:47day 2?
00:00:48A lot of very exciting matches.
00:00:51close fights that lasted for a long time and that were pretty good and yes I'm excited to see what
00:00:58these bronzes are gonna look like. This fight should be a pretty good one, Lashan Tsefej really, someone just turning senior so one of our
00:01:10was one of our top juniors in the last years versus Warren Seed, 32 years old
00:01:17very strong, very physically strong. Yes, he was an athlete fighting, he was training in Montreal for years and years, he went back home to Saskatchewan to his family farm and has been involved in judo since, has been improving, so that was a nice test here from Lashan Tsefej, the counselor
00:01:44must be all those hours on the farm working and lifting and getting stronger
00:01:49and the pressure, you know, you don't have this pressure of, this is my number one priority, no it's, well I do it for fun
00:01:56and judo style-wise I think they're, the type of athletes here are completely opposite
00:02:04Warren is more gonna be this grinder that will last, make the fight last and score, while Lashan is someone that will be much more of a thrower
00:02:17Perfect class of style
00:02:22Oh well, we'll see if youth, the youth is in the
00:02:26Very smart, very smart fight
00:02:28Okay, Lashan, take a breath, Lashan take a breath, take a breath, okay
00:02:35Using your feet
00:02:36Apologies for that
00:02:39A minute and a half gone so far
00:02:44So what does CBR need to do here to secure victory?
00:02:49To secure victory
00:02:53We want to make the fight dry, make it an okay fight
00:02:59Don't stop your head, don't stop, okay?
00:03:05Lashan's gonna want to get a point or even go for a win right away
00:03:13Because he knows that, you know, within three minutes of the moment, he's got a problem
00:03:21Very physical match so far
00:03:25High grip, cross grip at the same time
00:03:30Not a lot of huge throws of opportunity
00:03:35Lashan
00:03:41Lashan's younger brother, maybe 40 years
00:03:58I wonder if they have any sibling rivalry, you know, amongst themselves
00:04:04Let's go, let's go
00:04:13Oh, is he gonna pick him up here?
00:04:18Take a breath
00:04:24He forced himself down like a sack of potatoes in a farm field
00:04:34He's got a lot of energy to pick up someone from this slope
00:04:39It's gonna be, like, tougher and tougher to do it for Tassaraj
00:04:43Oh, wow
00:04:47I want you to move, I want you to move more
00:04:50I think it's a good way to block the attack
00:04:54Put your second leg in
00:04:55Head up, let's go
00:04:58He's gonna have to go for it
00:05:05Let's go
00:05:11You don't move
00:05:12Work, work, work
00:05:24You've been to Saskatchewan before, I think I've seen you on the team
00:05:27Hands up, hands up, come on
00:05:58Oh, wow
00:05:59Oh, he's trying to go for an armlock or turn him
00:06:03He doesn't have time anymore
00:06:08Okay
00:06:10The crowd didn't like that, did they?
00:06:12Well, there was no more time, I guess
00:06:14One of them, I guess, Lashan didn't hear the buzzer or the ref talking
00:06:20And, I mean, it's an armlock, it can be pretty dangerous
00:06:23Right
00:06:24So, on the other map, Popovici just beat Shoran by Ippon
00:06:30First bronze medal of the day
00:06:34As we are heading into golden score
00:06:43Lashan seems to be breathing a bit heavy
00:06:46Yeah, you know, taking your time to fix your gi, that's always a good strategy
00:06:50When you're tired, you know, you take some time to refocus
00:06:59There's also this danger where if you're, when you're someone like Sib
00:07:04that has a lot of energy, you don't want to overdo it
00:07:07if you feel your partner is getting tired
00:07:10because if you do too much, you might get counter
00:07:13Nice Korean grip
00:07:20Oh
00:07:23That should be a shield for white
00:07:27Breaking the grip
00:07:29Everything that is not positive is going to be penalized
00:07:33And in this instance, he just broke the grip without trying to go back or keeping it
00:07:38Oh, going for the Travis Pass, as we call it
00:07:42Oh, wow
00:07:43That could be, that could be it
00:07:46He just needs to be able to flip him, but he passed the legs
00:07:54But, again, that takes a lot of energy for
00:07:58for him to be able to do it
00:08:01He's got to be able to do it
00:08:04He's got to be able to do it
00:08:06It takes a lot of energy for Tetsalajvili
00:08:11to not be caught, like it's a lot of pressure being put on you
00:08:14So, trying to get out of this
00:08:17Yeah, he was trying to roll him over like a
00:08:20Like a pancake
00:08:22Yeah, that's right, like a pancake or a bale of hay on the farm
00:08:25Exactly
00:08:26Trying to roll it over
00:08:27Nice overhand grip, a pickup, that might be it
00:08:30Oh, oh
00:08:31On either side
00:08:32Oh, wow
00:08:33He fell for Warren's seed
00:08:35What a finish
00:08:39It's going to Saskatchewan
00:08:45Great effort by
00:08:47Yeah, he went for the pickup
00:08:49But when you try to pick up someone that has a cross grip
00:08:55This can be really tricky, and in this case Warren was able to change the angle
00:09:00As we see on the replay here, it was very high, very deep
00:09:06We don't have that replay anymore
00:09:08It was very high, very deep
00:09:10And as soon as he felt the opportunity to change the direction, he took it
00:09:15Yeah, he almost sat back on him, right?
00:09:17Kind of like, remember that time you did that?
00:09:18Yeah, I did that
00:09:19And you sat on the competition and you
00:09:21Speaking of pancakes, you flattened him
00:09:23That was one of my favorite moves
00:09:25Oh, the final here
00:09:27Cillo versus Young, USA, Canada
00:09:31Both of them know each other very well
00:09:34This is going to be a war, folks
00:09:36Yeah, true
00:09:41I'm a little bit less familiar with Cillo on the international scene
00:09:44But I know he's someone that has a very big tank
00:09:48I think he recently made the podium
00:09:50Yes, he won a tournament in
00:09:53I don't remember where
00:09:55In Europe, somewhere
00:09:57And Cillo knows this move very well
00:10:03And that is on, that's a choke
00:10:05That's in
00:10:06So he needs to resist
00:10:08He might
00:10:12He's out
00:10:13There you go
00:10:14Called it
00:10:15Wow
00:10:16I told you
00:10:18Cillo knew this choke very well
00:10:21He tried to keep the distance with the leg
00:10:27Did that happen in New York?
00:10:29So when I went to Boston with Kian
00:10:31Exactly the same thing happened
00:10:33Where this choke doesn't look like a choke
00:10:36Because you grab from under
00:10:38And with the elbow you try to do some pressure
00:10:42It's very sneaky
00:10:44And because you're on the stomach
00:10:47You don't feel the danger
00:10:48But as the pressure is being put
00:10:50You're in trouble
00:10:52So very well done by Kian
00:10:54Wow
00:10:56What a finish
00:10:57That was well done
00:11:00So Kian Yong
00:11:02Fairly easily winning
00:11:05The tournament
00:11:07He's had one incredible day for him today
00:11:11Incredible matches back to back
00:11:13He didn't have the easiest draw for sure
00:11:21We got some Americans here in the bronze under 70 kilos
00:11:25Roloff in white versus Garriga in blue
00:11:34Two United States players on the other mat
00:11:37One of the athletes did not make it to ground
00:11:41So Myers was declared the automatic winner
00:11:46So we're now watching the match
00:11:48So we're now watching the match
00:11:50Between Roloff and Garriga
00:12:00I probably shouldn't assume
00:12:01But I'm going to assume
00:12:02That these two know each other quite well
00:12:05Probably
00:12:07Because most of the athletes
00:12:09Are from a club coming here
00:12:11Or from the same area
00:12:13They probably know each other pretty well
00:12:16Ton of Americans in this tournament
00:12:19Which is awesome
00:12:20Oh yeah
00:12:21It's almost a local tournament for them
00:12:23It's near
00:12:25We don't get international tournaments like
00:12:28It's not IGF tour
00:12:30But it's an open
00:12:31There are not a lot of them
00:12:32Actually we're the only one in North America
00:12:34So we need to take advantage of it
00:12:40You mean even the US doesn't have
00:12:42No
00:12:44There were some in the past
00:12:47Notably in Fort Lauderdale
00:12:49They had a Grand Prix for a while
00:12:51Hasn't been held in numerous years
00:12:57With LA28 coming around the corner
00:12:59You kind of wonder if
00:13:02It's probably too late now
00:13:03You know the thing is
00:13:04To host a tournament
00:13:05It costs a lot of money
00:13:07You need an organizing committee
00:13:10It's a lot of time and money
00:13:14Sometimes that is the reason
00:13:15Some countries don't have them
00:13:19But America's got all the money
00:13:23And they have a lot of athletes for sure
00:13:26Just finding the right opportunity
00:13:29Right
00:13:35A lot of new ones have worked so far
00:13:40In this matchup
00:13:44Garriga's going for the choke
00:13:47Was on the chin
00:13:51Almost two minutes have gone by
00:13:55No score on the board, no shido's
00:14:09There it is
00:14:10Nice one for Wazari
00:14:13With the kataguruma
00:14:15Right into Senkaku
00:14:24You know she's going to want to
00:14:25Kill some time on the ground
00:14:29Now that she's ahead by
00:14:31Wazari with a little bit under two minutes
00:14:44That's the right way to do it
00:14:46Try to keep the action on the ground
00:14:49For Garriga
00:14:50She has less
00:14:51There's not as many risks
00:14:56To be caught on the ground
00:14:58Versus standing
00:15:00Nice drop Sennage
00:15:03She's been pretty active
00:15:04Even though she's ahead
00:15:06She's trying to keep the pace
00:15:07Put pressure on her opponent
00:15:10As we call for a medical break
00:15:14I think Garriga was bleeding
00:15:17On one of her hands
00:15:21A nice breathing break too, right?
00:15:23Yeah
00:15:24Sometimes that can change the momentum
00:15:26Especially for the athlete in the middle
00:15:29You know for the blue athlete
00:15:30She's outside of the ring
00:15:32She's breathing
00:15:33She's breathing
00:15:34She's breathing
00:15:35She's breathing
00:15:36She's breathing
00:15:37You know for the blue athlete
00:15:38She's outside of the match
00:15:39She needs to get taped
00:15:40So she's busy
00:15:41The other one
00:15:42She has all of this time to
00:15:44Refocus
00:15:45Think about her
00:15:46Her next move
00:15:49So sometimes that can be a game changer
00:15:52Or you know
00:15:53You're in a good spot
00:15:55You're doing well
00:15:56And then all of a sudden
00:15:57You need to get taped
00:15:58You know that can break
00:15:59Change the match
00:16:02In the
00:16:03Young versus Chonan
00:16:05Match
00:16:06Solomon-Chonan match
00:16:07I don't know if you watched it
00:16:09Yeah
00:16:10But there were I think
00:16:11Three or four breaks
00:16:12I think it was two
00:16:13Was it two?
00:16:14Because if you get taped
00:16:15If the same injury
00:16:17Happens
00:16:18Three times
00:16:19Three times you're out
00:16:20Okay
00:16:21So it's a TKO
00:16:22Okay
00:16:23Well it seemed to have really delayed
00:16:25Yeah
00:16:26Oh yeah and you know
00:16:27The game
00:16:28Sometimes you know
00:16:29There are fighters that cannot do
00:16:30A full four minutes
00:16:32And what happened is
00:16:33They get taped
00:16:34They have the time to
00:16:35Breathe a little bit
00:16:36They get their energy back
00:16:37And then it's a new fight
00:16:38Right
00:16:40But that momentum you get
00:16:41You know
00:16:42Sooner you're on a roll
00:16:43Yeah and then
00:16:44And you get that confidence
00:16:45Yeah
00:16:46It slows down the momentum
00:16:47Definitely
00:16:48And it can throw you off
00:16:49Look
00:16:50Just like a Shido
00:16:51Or a point being scored
00:16:52It changes the whole match
00:16:54Most matches are pretty short in Judo
00:16:56So
00:16:58If you have a bad Shido
00:16:59Right at the beginning
00:17:00It can change everything
00:17:05So
00:17:11So are you looking forward
00:17:12To going to Japan
00:17:13In a couple of weeks?
00:17:14Yeah
00:17:15I think that's going to be
00:17:16A very good experience
00:17:17A lot of the athletes
00:17:20I think actually
00:17:22Most of the athletes
00:17:23That will be leaving
00:17:24Did really well this weekend
00:17:27A lot of the younger guys
00:17:29And I think they all medal or so
00:17:31So
00:17:32It's going to be an exciting experience
00:17:33I think for all of them
00:17:34Actually
00:17:35It's a first experience in Japan
00:17:37Oh wow
00:17:38So I'm very excited to see
00:17:39How they're going to behave and adapt
00:17:41Are there any traditions
00:17:42When the Canadians go over there?
00:17:44Are there certain restaurants
00:17:46They go to?
00:17:47Or certain
00:17:48Outside of just
00:17:49You know
00:17:50So this
00:17:51Typically we're staying
00:17:52In the university residence
00:17:54This year we're not allowed
00:17:55So we're in a different spot
00:17:56This will be a first for me
00:18:00Like I think
00:18:01When they go to Tokyo
00:18:02Their spots are more known obviously
00:18:04Because the tournament is being held
00:18:06At the same venue
00:18:08Every year
00:18:12So
00:18:13A minute to go
00:18:15She should try to do a little bit
00:18:17More
00:18:18There you go
00:18:19She should try to do a little bit more
00:18:21Being more
00:18:23Offensive
00:18:24On the ground
00:18:25To show the ref
00:18:26That she's actually wanting to do something
00:18:28Instead of just
00:18:29Killing the time
00:18:33As you were saying before
00:18:34Garriga appears to be
00:18:35Way more offensive
00:18:36Than Roloff
00:18:37She seems in control
00:18:38Yeah
00:18:39She's rolling off more offense
00:18:40Yeah
00:18:41Definitely
00:18:45A little attack
00:18:46Avoided by Garriga
00:18:48Going for
00:18:50A choke
00:18:51I think
00:18:54I don't
00:18:55Know if that's on
00:18:56Definitely doesn't look
00:18:58Super nice to be in
00:18:59Oh
00:19:00That was on
00:19:02Or if it wasn't on
00:19:03It doesn't matter
00:19:04The end result is
00:19:06Ippon
00:19:07For
00:19:09Garriga from United States
00:19:10It looked very uncomfortable
00:19:11At one point
00:19:12Oh yeah
00:19:13Your spine
00:19:14Obviously you're not allowed
00:19:15To choke on the
00:19:16On the chin
00:19:17But if
00:19:18The ref cannot see it
00:19:19Then
00:19:21It's
00:19:22It's fine
00:19:23It's fair play
00:19:24Oh yeah
00:19:26Actually
00:19:27Arthur Marjolida from Canada
00:19:28That was one of his
00:19:29Tactic
00:19:30Where he would
00:19:31Do his choke
00:19:32Sometimes it would
00:19:33Land on the chin
00:19:34But if he stays on the stomach
00:19:35Nobody knows
00:19:36Is this for his infamous
00:19:37Arty choke
00:19:38Exactly
00:19:39Oh yes
00:19:40The infamous
00:19:41World renowned
00:19:42Arty choke
00:19:43Yeah and you know
00:19:44You don't feel the danger
00:19:45Because you're like
00:19:46Oh I have my chin
00:19:47I'm fine
00:19:48But instead of just choking
00:19:49It hurts
00:19:50I mean
00:19:51For those
00:19:52UFC fight
00:19:53Listening to us
00:19:54There's been an instance
00:19:55Where in one of the last
00:19:56UFC
00:19:57Someone would choke
00:19:58On the chin
00:19:59And broke
00:20:00The jaw
00:20:01That's right
00:20:02Alright final
00:20:03Between Charlize Thibault
00:20:04From Canada
00:20:05And
00:20:06Rachel Hawkes
00:20:07From Ireland
00:20:13Thibault a U18
00:20:15Yeah she fought yesterday
00:20:16Right
00:20:17Before yesterday
00:20:18She fought
00:20:19In
00:20:20All of the tournaments
00:20:21So far
00:20:22She fought
00:20:23Junior
00:20:24And cadet
00:20:25Definitely won
00:20:26At least
00:20:27One of them
00:20:28Oh that's tight
00:20:29That's done
00:20:30That is tight
00:20:31It's over
00:20:32That's very
00:20:33Very tight
00:20:34From
00:20:35Hawkes
00:20:36I think she's a pretty
00:20:37Oh
00:20:38So she got out
00:20:39Oh my god
00:20:40I'm surprised
00:20:41That looked pretty tight
00:20:42Nicely done
00:20:43By Thibault
00:20:44She's
00:20:45She's
00:20:46She's tough
00:20:47Definitely a more
00:20:48Experienced player
00:20:49Hawkes
00:20:50Being older
00:20:51And having fought
00:20:52Internationally a lot
00:20:53Thibault is just
00:20:54At the beginning
00:20:55Of her
00:20:56Her own career
00:20:57But it's a good
00:20:58It is
00:20:59A lot of good experience
00:21:00For her this weekend
00:21:01Fighting so much
00:21:02She just moved up
00:21:03From 63 to 70
00:21:04She was
00:21:05One of her athletes
00:21:06At Cadet Worlds
00:21:07Last
00:21:08August
00:21:09So one minute gone
00:21:10Good action so far
00:21:11Yeah to Charlie Thibault
00:21:12She seems like a very
00:21:13Tough fighter
00:21:14Oh yeah
00:21:15She's
00:21:16You can see
00:21:17She looks
00:21:18Right
00:21:19Right
00:21:20She looks very
00:21:21Strong
00:21:22She's
00:21:23She's
00:21:24She's
00:21:25She's
00:21:28Don't
00:21:29Just like
00:21:3017 years old
00:21:31She looks
00:21:32Much more
00:21:33Mature
00:21:34Physically
00:21:35It has a
00:21:36Very seriousness
00:21:37She has a
00:21:39Very serious
00:21:40Glare
00:21:41And
00:21:42Nicely
00:21:43Protected on the
00:21:44Ground for
00:21:45Thibault
00:21:46I'm afraid to
00:21:47Ask her
00:21:48For an interview
00:21:49He's a very
00:21:50Sweet person
00:21:51Ok
00:21:52Maybe
00:21:53Maybe I will
00:21:54this is not a good situation for Tsebo. She's gonna want to try to put a right hand on
00:21:59top. Nice little drop. I think the first Shido is gonna come very soon for Tsebo.
00:22:07If she doesn't do anything well I don't think they're gonna give it now. No. A little
00:22:15bit over two minutes to do.
00:22:24She's been struggling with that strong right arm. Tsebo.
00:22:31The sequences where she's able to control it early are going well but whenever she loses
00:22:42the control of the right sleeve she's struggling. There we go. First Shido awarded to Tsebo.
00:22:50Which city is she from originally? Trois-Rivières. Okay. So she trains at the club in Trois-Rivières
00:22:54along with her twin brother. She has a twin brother? Yep. 73 kilo. Also obviously U18.
00:23:04What's his first name? Justine. Ah, okay. I don't remember what he did at the tournament.
00:23:11He definitely did a couple of fights. I know he won Quebec Open last week. There we go.
00:23:20That's a good position for Tsebo. Well this is not necessarily a dangerous attack from
00:23:27Rachel Ox but definitely looks positive. She's showing that she's wanting to do something.
00:23:34She's wanting to throw. Not a lot of attacks so far by Tsebo. That was a good one.
00:23:47She's wanting to avoid that Senkaku.
00:23:51With just over a minute to go. Only a Shido on the board. Really close fight.
00:24:02I think she's gonna go for that drop Tsunagi again. Oh, there it is. Before it was Eri.
00:24:10Once she's done, she's gonna want to kill some time. Waste as much time as possible.
00:24:17There we go. Grabbing the back. That's very good for her. You don't necessarily want to
00:24:22finish the match right away. You want to control the back and you need evolution.
00:24:27If there's a progress towards better position, this is where the ref is gonna let it go.
00:24:33As soon as they see that you're stalling, that's where they're gonna say,
00:24:38and bring the action back standing. So, 30 seconds to go. This is gonna be the time for
00:24:45Tsebo to throw. Now, you're gonna see she's gonna want to rush for her partner. 24 seconds.
00:24:55She seems a little frustrated. It is frustrating. She's having trouble. You know,
00:25:03you can see Hawks keeps with her right arm reaching on her right arm in the lapel to go
00:25:12for a drop. You really show your opponent that's what you want to do as a move, but it is very
00:25:19effective because you're so close that obviously the partner is gonna fall. As the gong rings,
00:25:26Rachel Hawks wins by Rosari on Charlie Tsebo in the minus 70 kilo final.
00:25:33A great experience for Charlie Tsebo, obviously.
00:25:37Obviously, you do. She did three matches today. She did a couple of matches in the last two
00:25:43tournaments also. You know, she probably did like around 10 matches in a weekend.
00:25:48That's a valuable experience.
00:25:51That's awesome.
00:25:56Did you know Keegan was a skateboarder?
00:26:06Yes.
00:26:07He's an avid skateboarder.
00:26:09Yep. He loves skateboard, longboard.
00:26:13Good weekend for him. Good day for him overall.
00:26:2281 kilo was probably the category where we had the best athletes from Canada overall.
00:26:33And you can see it on the podium, three of the four athletes.
00:26:36Right.
00:26:37And two of them train at the INS, yeah?
00:26:49Yes, Popovici and Keegan, I think. They're not the same. Maybe Popovici is a year younger
00:26:56or they're the same age.
00:27:05Great effort by the American.
00:27:06Yeah, he had a good day also beating Warren in the semi-final.
00:28:06As we take a family picture, we're going to be getting back into the action. This time
00:28:13in minus 90 kilo. On our match, we're going to get a fight between Guillaume Gonay and
00:28:21Alex Marino, both from Canada.
00:28:32It's going to be a fight.
00:28:34Yep. Both are actually training together. Alex Marino, the veteran, in his late 20s,
00:28:43I would say maybe 27. Guillaume Gonay, quite younger, around 21, 22 years old. 22, I think.
00:28:53So that should be a good match. Both athletes have a lot of potential to throw, but they
00:29:01also know each other really well.
00:29:03Wow.
00:29:04Yes, there we go.
00:29:05Wow.
00:29:06That could have been Ippon. First to see if they're going to review it as quick attack
00:29:13by Marino.
00:29:14He didn't waste a second.
00:29:16He was ready when it started. Well, if Guillaume was not awake, that was a good wake-up call.
00:29:28Well said.
00:29:30You know, plenty of time for both athletes to do a lot more. This is not a good situation
00:29:38for Marino. Nicely avoided.
00:29:42Guillaume Gonay seems like a really tall fighter.
00:29:46Yes, very tall.
00:29:48He's like, I think, 6'2", almost. 6'1 1⁄2", something like that.
00:29:52Yes, quite taller than most of the athletes we have here.
00:29:57What would you say is his strength?
00:29:59He's a very good athlete.
00:30:01Overall, yeah.
00:30:02Athletically speaking, he's very good.
00:30:07Oh, nicely. Nice little attack attempt there.
00:30:11He has a very good Newaza move also, and I think everybody's aware of it.
00:30:16Tell us about it. Tell us about it.
00:30:18Oh, it's when he's going to want to go for a hug. It's hard to describe when he's going
00:30:22for a hug and then he turns you. It's so uncomfortable.
00:30:25Nice Orochi. That was well done.
00:30:30So, a minute has gone by so far.
00:30:33Is it like a turnover of a Osaekome, sort of?
00:30:37I think it chokes.
00:30:38Oh, it chokes. Okay.
00:30:39But also, it can go into Osaekome.
00:30:41Is this it right there?
00:30:43This is the move. He's going to want to go on one side of the neck and under the arm
00:30:47on the other side.
00:30:49As on the other mat, Moab overcomes Iwazere for Ippon.
00:30:54This is not a good situation for Marino.
00:30:57This is not a good situation.
00:31:01This is very not a good situation.
00:31:07I don't know if they're going to call it.
00:31:09I don't think so.
00:31:10Oh, wow. Wow, really?
00:31:12Yeah. So, the rule is if you fall on both arms, it is an Iwazere and a Shido.
00:31:19I would be curious to look at it again.
00:31:24A little bit surprised.
00:31:25I thought it was a delay between the arms, but well done for Alex Marino.
00:31:32Two Iwazeres in under two minutes.
00:31:36Here comes the finals.
00:31:38Under 90.
00:31:39Under 90. We've got Gautier Drapeau versus Knopf.
00:31:44Canada versus the U.S. here.
00:31:47Gautier Drapeau, our top 81 player that did seven at the Olympics.
00:31:53Finding 90 kilos this weekend.
00:31:55This is Alexander Knopf.
00:31:57Also a young prospect from the States.
00:32:00He's a freshly senior.
00:32:04It's going to be a right on right matchup.
00:32:09Fight!
00:32:14How is Gautier Drapeau feeling after the Olympic experience?
00:32:18He still feels the same.
00:32:20He's as solid, as stiff as ever.
00:32:23Very strong.
00:32:25That hasn't changed.
00:32:27I think one of the biggest differences right now is that, as I said,
00:32:30he's fighting 90 kilos for the tournament, but he's still an 81 kilo.
00:32:34So there's a couple of kilos of difference between the two athletes right now.
00:32:39You can see especially in height.
00:32:41Knopf is a little bit taller and still as strong.
00:32:46So Gautier Drapeau's objective is going to be to control the right arm of Knopf.
00:32:55Knopf is going to want to avoid that at all costs.
00:33:01Shoulder or something, I think.
00:33:05Pardon me, his arm?
00:33:07Yeah.
00:33:08He called for the medical, that's over.
00:33:11I think his shoulder might have popped up.
00:33:13Something bad happened because...
00:33:15Left shoulder.
00:33:17If you call for the medical, the match is over, definitely.
00:33:21That's a technical win for Gautier Drapeau.
00:33:25I just hope that it's not something too bad.
00:33:31I would be ashamed for him.
00:33:49Definitely something happened with his left arm.
00:33:53We hate to see that obviously happen to athletes, but it's...
00:33:57Gautier Drapeau doesn't really know what happens.
00:33:59He seems to be talking about shoulder.
00:34:03So he might have been right.
00:34:05So very anti-climatic ending, definitely for us.
00:34:09But in this situation, we just hope for the best for the athlete.
00:34:15Absolutely.
00:34:17And he's being taken care of right now.
00:34:19He's got a team of medics around him.
00:34:31You've had shoulder issues yourself in the past.
00:34:34And many athletes, it seems to be a common injury in this sport, no?
00:34:38The thing is...
00:34:39Is it the most common, would you say?
00:34:41I don't know.
00:34:42I don't know.
00:34:44The thing is...
00:34:45Is it the most common, would you say?
00:34:46I don't know.
00:34:47I think ACL is more common.
00:34:49Knee injuries are more common because we do judo more on our legs, obviously.
00:34:54But I think shoulder is a problem.
00:34:56Once you dislocate it once, it's a problem for your whole career.
00:35:01And in my case, that's what happened.
00:35:03I got two surgeries because of it.
00:35:10Was the first injury worse than the second?
00:35:13Both times were the same.
00:35:16I mean, obviously the same injury, which was that I dislocated it.
00:35:20Now, the surgery was not the same.
00:35:24First time, I did just a lebron.
00:35:27They repaired my lebron.
00:35:30The second time, they just solidified it so that it doesn't fall off.
00:35:33Wow.
00:35:43America
00:36:07Alright.
00:36:08I think this is the first time I've ever heard the Irish anthem.
00:36:11anthem yeah which is which is a beauty it sounds like a beautiful anthem well
00:36:15it's obviously not as a big country right so not as many athletes actually
00:36:21the coach Nathan Burns used to fight I used to be one of my opponent in 66
00:36:27kilos oh well he was fighting for Great Britain before he switched for Ireland
00:36:31I had some decent athletes in their history Burns obviously the Fletcher
00:36:38family or one of them well you guys cannot see but very small category
00:36:51on you are winning bronze medal or opponent did not show up
00:36:58as we head into the final karate got booed from Canada Nicole stout from
00:37:09the United States this is Coralie's first match today because the open and
00:37:14did not show up in the early rounds so let's see if she's ready
00:37:23karate is our top 78 players you just fresh of a bronze medal in Croatia
00:37:34Grand Prix back in September she's been it seems like she's been on a good roll
00:37:41she's she's improved a lot she's been training hard all of those years and
00:37:46it's really nice to see the hard work is finally paying off
00:37:49big girl left leg don't roll yourself on the back that should be a shido for
00:37:56blue but they're not gonna give it so this is not something you want to do if
00:38:03you pick up and the leg is inside very high danger of being countered as we saw
00:38:08with C bird here this is not a good situation for style she's gonna take
00:38:14and the Shido you can see the height difference totally very tall she's a big
00:38:2978 kilo in terms of a of height right Oh yourself on the back Wow exactly like I
00:38:40said that is the danger when you're fighting someone that comes high hand
00:38:51like this you don't want to commit to techniques you're not used to do
00:38:58Nicole Stout's coach is jumping oh yeah jumping all over the place here
00:39:05great effort by by stout yeah well you know she had a game plan which was to
00:39:14come high cross grip and first time Coralie didn't bite second time she went
00:39:21for the throw and we saw the result
00:39:26I think I don't think the 90 kilos were ready for such a quick quick matches
00:39:40because none of them are ready for the podium right oh we see Mojave yeah Mojave
00:39:47is there you see Alex Marino obviously enough is not gonna be there on the
00:39:52podium unless a miracle happens I go to the Apple also is that Alex and Matt
00:40:00Marino very active around a lot yeah he's training full-time he's not doing
00:40:06so many international tournaments he's good he's living in blocks to do a
00:40:10couple right now he's like he's been dealing with some injuries which has
00:40:16as I said the opportunities he got to fight internationally
00:40:35seems like a lot of the international competitors who come to Montreal for for
00:40:40this tournament are really impressed by how organized and well run it is you
00:40:46know yeah it's been running very smoothly we had a couple of technical
00:40:50issues on the first day which was a very problematic over an hour of wait on day
00:41:02one really yeah I guess that when they did the draw they didn't take the right
00:41:06system okay so they had to redo all of the draws manually oh well after an hour
00:41:11and a half of tournament so that was a that was a pretty bad problem but
00:41:17tournament ended up going well
00:41:24so three more categories today
00:41:29which will be the minus hundred plus 78 and then the plus a hundred kilo I think
00:41:42John was fighting in the plus 100 for John is one of our top prospect I mean
00:41:49such an impressive and unique physique by you see him and he's like one of the
00:41:57tallest players right very strong it's rare that you get such a physique in
00:42:02Canada doing judo very athletic also for his size how strong is he is he like
00:42:09Gauthier drapeau strong so I don't know in the gym as Nicolas Gill our CEO
00:42:26calling for Francois Gauthier drapeau talking to his mom
00:42:33so John I don't know in the gym like I've not been there a lot when he's
00:42:39doing the gym sessions but on the mat I fought him and it is unsettling at how
00:42:46you know how far he can reach and how easily can bring you close Wow
00:42:53finally Gauthier drapeau showing up for his medal now can he do that to someone in
00:42:59his own division do you think yeah like he's been well I mean he's he won the
00:43:04Canada world medal but he wasn't the Canada World Championship it's not of
00:43:10course he's a good judo player but he's also very strong right as we are finally
00:43:20doing
00:43:24oh is that Krista Deguchi yep Krista Deguchi our first and only
00:43:30Olympic gold medalist awarding the medals today
00:43:44to BC she went to Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario obviously Quebec for the
00:43:52tournament and high-performance gala tomorrow she's leaving for New Brunswick
00:43:56before heading back to Japan. That is a big tour and I heard she was very busy, visited a lot of schools, did a lot of training
00:44:05we've seen we've seen a lot of content highlighting her tour up here in
00:44:12Montreal for to host her training seminar there were over a hundred kids
00:44:16on the mat and lots of over 200 there you go and lots of parents in the crowd of
00:44:22course it is promoting judo and I remember as a kid I remember when after
00:44:29his silver medal at the Olympics he came to Saguenay to promote judo and inspire the new generation
00:44:36that's awesome
00:44:40it inspired you obviously it inspired many right he seems like an inspiration
00:44:47still an inspirational figure in the sport, hall of famer, IGF hall of famer
00:44:55obviously we're missing Nof who's gotten injured he's not on the podium but we
00:45:20hope he recovers we hope for a speedy recovery hope to see him fight again he
00:45:26was doing well in the international competition
00:45:32so now we're going to minus 100 kilo category we'll be focusing on the match
00:45:39between Nick Nuschkin from Canada and Michael Agbyshev also from Canada
00:45:50junior athlete from Ontario Agbyshev a senior younger senior from Manitoba
00:45:59Agbyshev's at the INS right? yes training a full-time at the INS been a couple of
00:46:04years now you think Nick will make that transition as well? it's hard to say
00:46:15right one of the thing is you need to know the athletes their personality
00:46:21I had a fight with Nick only once limited we still limited contacts with him
00:46:27it depends a little bit on his financial situation his own aspirations right you
00:46:34know like it's at some point around this at the end of your junior career you
00:46:39have to pick between sometimes between school and Judo a lot of times you the
00:46:45choice for the athletes or is a school post-secondary like university yep
00:46:51college university as in they would have to go somewhere in Montreal well so when
00:47:03you because I mean in Canada in Quebec we have Cégep to do so a lot of times
00:47:08you have around the time you start your senior career so this is where the
00:47:11breaking point happens
00:47:14we'll get big
00:47:26one minute 15 seconds gone first you are awarded to Lushkin one thing that
00:47:42plays for Agbashev is a he's a left-handed player and when you're
00:47:49younger you're not exposed as much to left-handed players and for right-handed
00:47:56player it is especially difficult because they're not used to it well that
00:48:01can be one of the factor here one of the decisive factor and then lefties are in
00:48:07the minority right yes I remember the last time I saw Nick Lulushkin he had a
00:48:14incredible front you're nagging he's a very physical player right fun to watch
00:48:27for a couple of forward attacks I was like Russia decide to stop the action
00:48:39instead of going for a transition so she do awarded to aggressive when she do for
00:48:56each of the player very deep the left hand for Agbashev very tricky for a
00:49:02lunch kid to adapt as he steps out of the mat
00:49:13minute and a half to go very close matchup so far no love of throwing
00:49:17opportunity very tactical no nice was a nice nice I go she almost good enough
00:49:30for was very but not quite I'd say so far the best opportunities were for
00:49:36Agbashev well the scoreboards down yeah that's a problem
00:50:06we are gonna take a little break as we are waiting for computer to come back
00:50:27we may have to go analog instead of digital that's how judo used to be there
00:50:34used to be cards that you would flip for scores and flags being raised for
00:50:39the Osakomi and for the Maté at GMA maybe they'll bring that back come
00:50:44January maybe that's that's the change they're talking about I'm kidding I hope
00:50:51not yeah well what do you know I know we're gonna this is just speculation but
00:50:56what are some of the changes you think they're going to introduce I have heard
00:51:02so many rumors obviously everybody's talking about the leg grab mm-hmm this
00:51:06is the thing that people want back so I mean it was a polarizing rule when they
00:51:13banished them in the first place there's a lot of players love to do this kind of
00:51:18judo how did you react to it when when when that was brought in what was your
00:51:24initial thought I didn't mind I mean I I was not doing a lot of them but people
00:51:31were not attacking me so I was not being thrown a lot like this obviously
00:51:36it helped me and you'd my judo evolved with that with that taken in
00:51:41consideration mm-hmm so I don't know if they remember how much time was left I
00:51:47think it was a minute and a half
00:51:50Oh 109 they're saying okay so we're back into it yep 109 almost a new fight as
00:52:07we were talking earlier about earlier right a nice break let's see who
00:52:11capitalizes on the break a nice breather can can change the trajectory of yeah
00:52:20nice forwards like for Agbishev
00:52:27goes for drops an Aggie 45 seconds left to the match
00:52:50Shido a piece so this this is a very tight match yeah yeah very tactical
00:53:00Kimikata's on the gripping it's not as a it's not an explosive match definitely
00:53:21five seconds we're most likely hitting into golden score no nice hope that's
00:53:26gonna be a Shido for Agbishev for leg grab I'm pretty sure that he didn't
00:53:33have the sleeve and he went with the elbow on the leg
00:53:40unless the ref didn't see it or he had the elbow he had the something with the
00:53:46sleeve
00:53:51you
00:54:02nice deep hand for Agbishev that was very cool for a counter for Yushkin 30
00:54:17seconds into golden score
00:54:27technique is gonna go for it I hope I hope like I think something's gonna need
00:54:34to move either way
00:54:47or maybe she attempt for Agbishev I think the longer this goes it's
00:54:55probably I'm gonna assume in Nick's favor hard to say those categories you
00:55:02never know who has a good condition or not
00:55:06I think I think Yushkin is also lefty but he's been fighting righty
00:55:13oh nice counter from Yushkin so you know what thinking about it he is a lefty
00:55:23he's not a righty but he turns on the right when facing a lefty that was a
00:55:31nice counter there very nicely done so Nick Yushkin leaving with the Browns
00:55:43medal in the minus 100 kilo category
00:55:51as we are heading into a final between Nathaniel key from the United States
00:55:56and Tokuzo Takahashi also from the United States Nick lunch can he he
00:56:04fought this Takahashi and he had a lot of problems with him I think he's a I
00:56:10think he's a old player I think old players in the veteran I think so okay
00:56:21that's what I heard earlier maybe I'm completely wrong very physically strong
00:56:25yeah
00:56:31I mean I googled his age very quickly
00:56:3548 years old Wow there you go okay I was not running I wonder if he fought at
00:56:53the veteran world he has a senior world ranking I think he was a top 100 okay so
00:57:00he's been doing a lot of tournaments maybe he's eyeing la-28 most likely I
00:57:06think a lot of the USA athletes will try to be in the mix for a qualification
00:57:11why not it's gonna be an incredible experience for American judoka right
00:57:18it's their time to shine yeah I was very well avoided by Takahashi as he's going
00:57:30for and he's hooked he's cruising I got me oh wow he has the arm now that's
00:57:36gonna get out pretty easily he almost had him like in a crucifix yeah
00:57:41position there shades of Gary Goodrich from the old school UFC remember that
00:57:47when he had a little bit too oh you don't remember we had a bit of when he
00:57:50made his debut and we'll talk about it after a different sport but it was an
00:57:55epic clip where he had a guy in a crucifix and he was dropping elbow
00:57:59vicious vicious clay anyways let's focus on judo minute and a half gone
00:58:05Takahashi picked up a sheet oh there it is hurry Paul very nice I was I think I
00:58:13wasn't nice people Daniel Keefe with an awesome finish and he did it recently I
00:58:21saw a promo video he did for judo TV comm yes sort of like an ad promoting
00:58:27veteran worlds mm-hmm Vegas you should do more videos man this guy's hilarious
00:58:34funny dude he's a nice guy
00:58:40messing around with the camera you know which part of the u.s. I don't remember
00:58:47Northeast he's been coming a lot to came a couple of times to Montreal for
00:58:52training okay so it's good for when he comes it's good training partner for us
00:58:57but also for him now the Americans love coming up here that's what a lot of them
00:59:02tell us they love one sure I do we're now awarding a podium for 78 kilos
00:59:22Oh
00:59:38Kodaly got blue captures the silver
00:59:52you
01:00:22you
01:00:36all right we are back for
01:00:43bronze medal matches unfortunately for us we won't have any action to comment
01:00:50as an alarm for commander says he did not compete today Amanda McAlpine will
01:01:01be awarded bronze medal so although we won't see any action on our mat there's
01:01:07still gonna be a fight on the other not harassing maybe we'll be able to pan
01:01:19over to the other mat I hope so otherwise you guys on the live stream
01:01:25will have a very boring time congrats to Amanda McAlpine and yeah maybe we can
01:01:36pan to the other mat if possible
01:01:42otherwise you just have to hear us talk about absolutely nothing I think we can
01:01:46see it from here right yeah we can see it we'll call it we've got Karras in
01:01:53blue and Debbie a in white oh there you go there it is we won't have the
01:02:00scoreboard but that's that's not a problem we'll definitely oh there we go
01:02:05that's perfect so you guys can see the action thank you very much the hard
01:02:11working crew that puts this live stream on thank you for listening to your
01:02:16little demands like this first first you go to Debbie a with 45 seconds gone so
01:02:25far so plenty of time strong right hand for Karras very aggressive on the grip
01:02:33Oh a little bit of attitude they're pushing well it's a fight my friend yes
01:02:39second Shido picked up by Debbie a it's a fight it happens I'm sure you've done
01:02:44that once or twice oh yeah back in your day oh yeah but now I need to raise the
01:02:50awareness on right right right that was a very poor Sonagi attempt I believe
01:02:58they're gonna give the Shido or give another chance I hope they give another
01:03:01yeah I think that's a good move you know they already gave two shields in two
01:03:06sequences so Karras fighting out of Edmonton Alberta
01:03:19do you know which which dojo Debbie a is from? Debbie a yes she's from yeah yeah okay I
01:03:26think that fight is already over three Shido picked up by Debbie a in a
01:03:30minute and a half for throwing yourself on the knee that is where it
01:03:38deserves Shido's fear that I really wanted to it was much more physical than
01:03:47Debbie a in this fight and you know in struggle
01:03:52since the opening called so quickly yeah it was like back-to-back
01:04:00I could just lose gold medal not the United States versus United States match
01:04:06between Lena Hopkinson from the United States and Jessica Alenic so let's see
01:04:22oh wow okay I saw back attack here for Alenic
01:04:41they don't have the heaviest plus 78 oh you're right so probably more quick oh
01:04:56nice Uchimara that was really well done Wow beautiful I think sadly for the
01:05:05light you didn't see it but I was really well done quick match Jessica
01:05:12Alenic from the United States for the gold medal you're right they almost look
01:05:19like under 78 yeah but but again we're talking about it yesterday where when
01:05:26you see Adler from far away a certain size but then you know maybe they're
01:05:32very tall they're strong yeah it's so deceiving it's like when you see them
01:05:40in real life up close like oh my god they're huge bigger
01:05:46we will have one more person to watch after this award ceremony
01:05:54we will be heading into the
01:06:00as we watch the minus hundred video ceremony we'll be heading into plus a
01:06:04hundred I don't know how many matches there are in this category
01:06:16I think it's gonna be one
01:06:34Horiguchi versus Rama
01:06:39don't mean to be mispronounced and in the finals we have Eddie GP a great
01:06:47message of the song from Canada aka John yeah
01:07:39we take a family picture we're going to be heading into our first
01:07:49Ireland and United States
01:07:54and these dudes look big on bigger and more like TV in real life
01:08:11now I know in the u.s. wrestling is very popular right and I know that a lot of
01:08:25kids who do judo also do wrestling and they don't stay in judo once you know
01:08:31once they're done with high school because well some of them yeah they pick
01:08:36one or the other I think yet wrestling is bigger in the States you get a
01:08:42scholarship yes exactly because it's in the schools and universities and
01:08:50be nice if they they had it at the call if it was a college level sport I know
01:09:06some I think was it some some universities have teams right like out
01:09:11in California I think that's a good question I'm not very nice though
01:09:15where I go she attempt for the Irish player so could you could you imagine if
01:09:22they had you know in some in some countries I get in France it is in the
01:09:29school programs right for kids to learn judo mm-hmm so this obviously helps them
01:09:33to have more athletes start picking it up and was there a straight into the
01:09:42cycle we did not call there was a re but this is definitely a cycle me seal
01:09:48the deal here yeah I don't think that's gonna come out it's it's in heavier
01:09:57categories obviously much harder to come out because the weight on is much far
01:10:03bigger that's right my daughter chief from United States will be leaving with
01:10:11the bronze medal in the plus 100 kilo category the only bronze medal awarded
01:10:17here as we will be adding into the last match of the day and the whole weekend
01:10:24the final of plus a hundred kilo
01:10:31at the INS you guys do a lot of drills in terms of escapes from from various so
01:10:38yes it's part of the yes it's pretty important you know you don't know when
01:10:43you're gonna be caught in that situation as we see John miss this song and Daniel
01:10:52Ed heading on the mat we're talking about John's incredible physique earlier
01:11:00you can see that he's quite taller than his opponent and he's gonna control that
01:11:06right arm very early
01:11:18we're beginning to hear British we went from American English to British English
01:11:22accents here from the crowd that is so far a lot of gripping no attacks
01:11:36one of them I've done an attack there we go John Frieda's I'd say this is a
01:11:48very tough situation for Daniel Ed from Great Britain you can see they are both
01:11:56going through to for sleep control both trying to control the right arm of the
01:12:00opponent in this case as soon as John was able to free his arm he was the one
01:12:06going on the offensive there's gonna be a lot of this throughout the match both
01:12:11of them John already has the sleeve now he's in control he's moving freely here
01:12:17for you I saw Soto generating again generating that momentum you know when
01:12:23he starts moving it so you can see that Ed is in trouble in this situation he's
01:12:29gonna try to create some distance my goodness he just slammed dunked him was
01:12:38a nice aside good lord he went for a high grip with
01:12:43sleep control and then he changed towards a hole under the elbow first
01:12:51aside for the win and that's gonna be it for us that was the last gold medal
01:12:59being awarded today what a spectacular way to end it yeah exactly I was gonna
01:13:04say nice people very nice day to finish an overall awesome weekend thank you
01:13:10everyone for joining us and we hope to see you next year as we see the replay
01:13:16let's just treat ourselves Wow now so nice we almost sent him right back to
