00:00My fellow countrymen, it's not a joke to run, ride a bicycle, and run a kilometer-long distance,
00:06especially if you have a cancer that's close to your heart and spreads to your lungs and bones.
00:11But the Filipino-American nurse triathlete managed to do it.
00:15Here's the story of her journey in the running of Rafi Thima.
00:23In the body of Jonathan Tubong San Jose Nueva Ecija,
00:26he was born in Hawaii and is now based in San Francisco, California.
00:30He has been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 15.
00:33It's hard to believe that he's been diagnosed with cancer for 5 years.
00:38Mediastinal Paraganglioma.
00:40It's stage 4 because the cancer that's close to my heart
00:45has spread to my lungs and to my bones, from my head to my legs.
00:55In March 2022, when he was diagnosed with cancer,
00:58he was operated on for 15 years because of a brain tumor.
01:01Because his bones were eating cancer, his back was fractured and he had to be operated on.
01:06His cancer didn't go away.
01:08There's a therapy, radiation, and targeted therapy,
01:12and the main goal is stability.
01:16What's up, buddy?
01:17I'm better now.
01:26Good swim.
01:28After recovering from back surgery, Jonathan participated in an ultramarathon.
01:32This is where he decided to participate in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii,
01:36which he dreamed of doing before he got sick.
01:38But because of cancer, Jonathan realized that he would have a hard time in the 3.8-kilometer swim.
01:43Because the tumors blocked my head, my neck, and my tongue,
01:49I had a hard time breathing.
01:52When I got to the shore, I said,
01:55just focus on your breathing and catch your breath.
01:57I heard the announcer say,
02:00I had two minutes to spare.
02:02I cried because I realized that I now have the chance
02:09to get onto the bike and onto the run.
02:12I knew that I could do it.
02:13Your family is at the very end of that line.
02:17So that's what I was looking for.
02:21Thank God that's exactly what happened.
02:23They were there.
02:26So I clung on to that dream and I've never let go.
02:29As long as his body can take it,
02:31Jonathan will continue to participate in the races
02:34to strengthen his body
02:36and to inspire those like him who are fighting to live.
02:40There is always something that you can do for yourself and others
02:44however difficult your life circumstances may be.
02:48It has given me this new life of giving this message of hope.
02:58For GMA Integrated News, Raffy T. Manacatutok, 24 hours.
