US troops in South Korea swap guns for love in kimchi-making charity event

US soldiers stationed in South Korea rolled up their sleeves to make kimchi for South Korean families in need at a charity event on Tuesday, November 19.

About 50 US soldiers donned pink rubber gloves and blue plastic aprons to mix and ferment cabbage with a spicy paste made of red pepper, garlic, ginger, and fish sauce at a parking lot of the Dongducheon Volunteer Center, which was cleared for the event.

Working with local volunteers, US soldiers from the 210th Field Artillery Brigade made about 4,500 kilograms of the traditional Korean side for the needy in Dongducheon, the military said.

About 28,000 US troops are based in South Korea to help defend against the hostile North and maintain peace in the Korean peninsula.

00:30I've been here for about two years now, this is my first opportunity to learn how to make
00:57kimchi, but it's a terrific event because we're immersed in the culture, I'm having
01:03the ability to connect with folks in Dongashan, I'm connecting with soldiers, I'm explaining
01:07the importance of why we volunteer, why we want to make sure we represent the U.S. Army
01:14in such a professional manner, and it's just a great experience outside of the normal army
01:19mission that we support on a daily basis.
01:33So I have three children, two girls and one boy, they've been in Korea as well for two
01:37years, they're in Pyeongtaek, they love kimchi, so instead of bringing the store-bought, now
01:43I can tell them that their dad made it and I can bring them the actual, legitimate, Major
01:48Z kimchi too.
02:00I'm just an open person, I like to try new things, so I figured making kimchi would be
02:05an awesome experience to have, honestly, yeah.
02:27It was a lot of fun, my hands are very cold, but we're having a good time out here.
