South Yorkshire can open a new chapter in its impressive history as a “region of makers” as the Government places advanced manufacturing at the heart of its new industrial strategy, the region’s mayor Oliver Coppard has suggested.
Opening the Advanced Manufacturing Conference at Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield, Mr Coppard reflected on renewed national efforts to revitalise UK industry and build a more resilient and independent economy in an increasingly uncertain world.
The Government’s recently published industrial strategy has listed advanced manufacturing, which is a term used to describe production processes that rely on cutting-edge science and technology research, as one of eight priority sectors.

00:00I want to talk about why manufacturing matters, and the importance of it to us here in South Yorkshire in particular, to the North, but also to the whole of the UK.
00:11And I want to finish by talking about why manufacturing matters to me and to our communities right across this region.
00:18We've always made things here in South Yorkshire, as you've just heard, from steel to trains, cutlery, munitions and anything else you can think of.
00:26We're a region of makers. It's part of our cultural DNA, our muscle memory.
00:32And through it, we powered the world's first industrial revolution.
00:36Even today, manufacturing accounts for over 12% of our output.
00:40Manufacturing gave us and continues to give us pride, it gives us purpose and it gives us prosperity.
00:48You see those three things writ large in venues and institutions like the one that we're in today.
00:53You see it literally on the walls of this building in that room just next door.
00:58You see it in the companies, big and small, that call this region their home.
01:02You see it in the investments that we've made, in the investments we're planning, in your secret things we say and the things we do.
